Two weeks after NFL linebacker Junior Seau committed suicide, the Mission Valley restaurant that bares his name closed, a trustee announced Wednesday. Bette Hoffman, who formerly was the director of the Junior Seau Foundation and former vice president of Seauís of San Diego LLC, announced the closure of the popular sports bar. Without Seauís charismatic leadership, it was felt that the future profitability of the restaurant could be in question,Hoffman released in a statement. All employees will be paid accordingly along with their accrued vacation commitments, she said.

With the apparent suicide of NFL great Junior Seau, who played 20 years in the world's most violently glamorous sport, American football is dying. It's about time. The nationally televised gambling and meat-rendering factory cannot survive without new players. And the parents of future players are asking themselves this: Is football worth it for my child?

A gray-haired woman in a green floral dress is screaming the worst moment of her life in front of the entire world. Luisa Seau stands in front of microphones, in front of cameras, on televisions across the country wailing the sometimes incoherent words of every motherís worst nightmare. ďI pray to God,Ē she screams, ďplease take me, take me and leave my son, but itís too late. Too late.Ē You mightíve seen the heartbreaking video already. If you watched television at all Wednesday, or opened up a web browser, it was hard to miss and harder to stomach that Junior...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Junior Seau. Junior Seau's suicide. I met Junior Seau just one time. It was one year at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic Golf Tournament. Dean Spanos, the Chargers owner, was playing in the tournament and I was playing with Fuzzy Zoeller and his crew that year. And we all had dinner one night after that day's round. And Junior Seau was everything everybody is saying about him. He was uplifting, he was funny, he was in a great mood. He was kind of in my face humorously over politics. He was a big believer in the government...

Professional football should come with a warning label. Like cigarettes, football can be hazardous to your health ... and all too frequently lately it can be fatal. If the sad truth of Junior Seauís tragic death yesterday is that it came by his own hand, as Oceanside, Calif., police believe was the case, he is only the latest example of the ravages of a sport whose concussive demands seem to be regularly destroying its own. Only a week ago, Ray Easterling, a former defensive back with the Atlanta Falcons, took his life in similar fashion ó with a handgun that...

SAN DIEGO -- Junior Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker who played with the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins during a 16-year NFL career, will announce his retirement Monday. Seau will make the announcement at a news conference at Chargers Park on Monday afternoon, the team said in a statement Sunday. The 37-year-old Seau spent the past three seasons with Miami after being acquired from San Diego. He was released by the Dolphins in March after missing 17 games the past two years due to injury. He finished both seasons on injured reserve, and an Achilles' tendon injury...

This is my Letter to editor that appeared in the 10/25/03 Naples Daily News. Note: Tom Rife is the local sports writer and the Killer B's is the name of the old Miami Dolphin Defense. Racist, right? Editor, Naples Daily News: Anyone who says something like "The way to slow down Donavan McNabb is to feed him watermelons and fried chicken" is a racist and should be called on it. Thank goodness all the nation's sports writers and opinion columnists put Rush Limbaugh in his place and wasted no time labeling Rush a racist. Oh, what do you mean? Rush...
