Rush vs Seau Reaction, Letter to editor
Posted on 10/26/2003 6:20:18 PM PST by Defendingliberty
This is my Letter to editor that appeared in the 10/25/03 Naples Daily News. Note: Tom Rife is the local sports writer and the Killer B's is the name of the old Miami Dolphin Defense.
Racist, right?
Editor, Naples Daily News:
Anyone who says something like "The way to slow down Donavan McNabb is to feed him watermelons and fried chicken" is a racist and should be called on it.
Thank goodness all the nation's sports writers and opinion columnists put Rush Limbaugh in his place and wasted no time labeling Rush a racist.
Oh, what do you mean? Rush didn't say that?!
Are you saying Rush was giving his opinion about the media and their coverage of McNabb?
Then who made the watermelons and fried chicken comment?
Junior Seau of the Miami Dolphins.
Well, it's all right then. No reason to call him a racist.
I'm sure that those same writers like Tom Rife who were quick to slam Rush will now be sitting on their hands.
When you call something racist that isn't, it diminishes real racism.
In fact the Dolphins have the 3-4 defense, the 4-3 defense and now the fried chicken and watermelons defense.
Oh how I long for the days of the Killer B's.

I don't think it's "racist," to make a crude or cutting remark about a member of a racial minority. It may be crass, or rude, or not very nice, but racism is something completely different--it's an ideology that insists one race is superior to another. You know--the ideology practiced by Democrats.

Seau said there were no racial overtones to his comments. Former teammate Marcellus Wiley said: "I'm sure it was harmless. Junior has that side of him that we know and unfortunately maybe America doesn't know. He's not the new Rush Limbaugh, I don't think."
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,101969,00.html Tomlinson, the San Diego Chargers' star running back, laughed off Seau's comment Wednesday that the way to stop him is to feed him fried chicken and watermelon. Seau, the former Chargers linebacker who's now with Miami, insists he meant no harm with the statement
I feel like that's a lot of stuff that's missing in football. A lot of times people get caught up in, 'Oh, what are people going to say?' It's not about what people are going to say
"
Tomlinson said he wasn't surprised that his fashion statement was questioned. "I kind of figured a couple of people would, because they don't understand," he said. "That's why I wanted to get it out so they could understand it."
