The age-old killer scarlet fever is on the rise in England and East Asia, according to research published Monday in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, and investigators don't know why. "Whilst notifications so far for 2017 suggest a slight decrease in numbers, we continue to monitor the situation carefully ... and research continues to further investigate...

Street protests against American and British military action in Iraq have escalated into attacks by Muslim youths on Jewish demonstrators, sparking fears of a new wave of anti-Semitism across France. –London Sunday Telegraph, April 6, 2003 It would take many months for David de Rothschild to realize that what was happening to Jews in France was a powerful predictor of a war that was coming down history’s long stream. In May 2001, when he and a group of French business leaders arrived in Jerusalem for meetings with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and members of his Cabinet, he reluctantly agreed to...

Women see scarlet, men see red Jennifer Viegas Discovery News Wednesday, 4 August 2004 The world may appear a more colourful place to women, according to a new study that finds many women perceive a greater range of colours than men, particularly shades of red. The U.S. study, which analysed DNA from populations around the world, is published in the September issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics. How men and women see the world appears to relate to evolution and how our early ancestors found food. Men were likely to have been surveying the landscape for prey to...

They've become household names, an echo in worried parents' minds: Danielle van Dam, Samantha Runnion, Elizabeth Smart. These high-publicity child abductions rattled nerves – and neighborhoods – across America. And here in suburban San Diego, the fears coincided with a new opportunity for precautionary action. In June, the County Sheriff's department launched an online map of sex offenders, allowing parents to plug in addresses or zip codes and view sprinklings of colored dots, each dot representing the home of a convicted sex offender. Logging into the website, a group of suburban mothers here was shocked to see one of those...
