A Rutgers University professor told a seminar discussing the Israel-Hamas conflict that it is 'violent' and 'homophobic' to raise the issue of how LGBT people are treated in Gaza. Maya Mikdashi, associate Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at New Jersey's State University, told students earlier this month that she has been approached by people at pro-Palestine protests who tell her that she would be treated horribly by Hamas. 'So I've been at protests where I'm then told "don't you know what Hamas would do to you, if you were in Palestine",' she said.

Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announced his resignation on Tuesday, just weeks after documents exposed that he made “untruthful” comments about U.S. federal funding of gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. “It has been an incredible privilege to lead this great agency for more than a decade,” Collins said in a statement posted at the NIH website. I love this agency and its people so deeply that the decision to step down was a difficult one, done in close counsel with my wife, Diane Baker, and my family. I am proud of all...

A New Jersey professor suggested on a TV program that racism and President Donald Trump’s policies are responsible for black female obesity. Rutgers University women’s and gender studies professor Brittney Cooper made the argument during an appearance on “Black Women OWN the Conversation” on the Oprah Winfrey Network. "I hate when people talk about Black women being obese," Cooper said on the program. "I hate it because it becomes a way to blame us for a set of conditions that we didn’t create." "We are living in the Trump era," the professor said. "And look, those policies kill our...

NEW BRUNSWICK — Authorities at Rutgers University are investigating a suspicious package in a campus parking deck, and advising students to avoid the area Monday morning. According to a tweet from the university, students and visitors should avoid the Douglass Parking Deck and surrounding area. A University spokesman said Monday morning at about 9 a.m. that authorities were on scene. "The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) has closed-off the area around the Douglass Parking Deck and is working to determine whether the package presents a danger," E.J. Miranda said. "RUPD will provide updated information as it becomes available."

Three Rutgers University scientists came to Trenton Tuesday to give Governor Christie a message: climate change is real, and it's man-made.  The State House forum, sponsored by several environmental groups, was held in response to Christie's recent comments at a Toms River town hall that he is skeptical that global warming results from human activity. "I've heard over 100 different arguments about why we shouldn’t accept global warming. They're all fallacious and I'd be happy to point out the errors in any of them," said Rutgers professor Alan Robock, a meteorologist.Responding to a question at the town hall last month,...

Speakers try to sway students on stem cells In January of 2004, the New Jersey Senate passed a bill allowing stem cell research in the state, opening the door for the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey. In order to approve bond money for the facility, proponents of stem cell research have begun a campaign at the University to put the issue to a vote as early as November. At the request of acting Gov. Richard J. Codey, supporters of stem cell research addressed the Rutgers College Governing Association Tuesday to rally student support for the Stem Cell Institute. Approval...

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A national pro-Palestinian student conference planned for Rutgers University this fall will now be held Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway — if the event remains in New Jersey. University officials, who are providing space for the National Student Conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement's forum, decided earlier this month to move the event from the Douglass College student center. It's scheduled to be held on Oct. 10-12. Officials, who expect several pro-Israel groups to stage protests during the conference, said the move was made to address security and crowd concerns. However, members of New Jersey...

(CNSNews.com) - A planned pro-Palestine student conference scheduled to be held at Rutgers University in October is drawing sharp criticism from pro-Israel groups and now has state political leaders, including New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey and the state's highest ranking Republican, entering the fray. The National Student Conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement is expected to attract hundreds of student activists and nationwide supporters of an independent Palestinian state. Among the events scheduled for October include workshops on how students can pressure their schools to stop investing in companies that do business with Israel, along with rallies to support the...
