Several Oklahoma legislators are concerned that individuals and organizations are quietly working on plans to create a privately-operated tollway in Oklahoma. Many referred to Spain-based Cintra, which has been involved in the development of a proposed Trans-Texas Corridor. Cintra also took over the operation of the Indiana East-West Toll Road from the Indiana Department of Transportation in 2006. Oklahoma State Sen. It sounds almost too good to be true. State Sen. Bob Welch raised better than half a million dollars last year in his bid to challenge U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold this fall, yet his campaign paid staffers for its fund-raiser, Gateway Ventures, a mere $1,400 in 2003. How could a campaign spend so little to raise so much? Welch's folks chalk it up to being stingy with their checkbook. Recently, a JBS chapter leader accused me of lying when I pointed out that Robert Welch thought President Dwight D. Eisenhower was "a dedicated, conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy." It amazes me how, even at this late date, many Birch Society members still parrot the Birch party-line with respect to this matter. I obtained my photocopy of the unpublished version of The Politician from G-2 Army Intelligence.
