Researching his new book "Birchers", Matthew Dallek discovers paperwork documenting a successful espionage campaign effort thwart an anti-Civil Rights group group deemed a threat by some Jews JTA-A historian leafing through files in an archive discovered how a Jewish organization helped bring down an influential far-right extremist movement in the United States in the 1960's and 70's by going undercover and acting at self-appointed spies. The discovery of the Anti-Defamation League's covert operation targeting the John Birch Society is the basis of a chapter in a new book by political historian Matthew Dallek of George Washington University. Published in March,...

John Bircher alert. Title is misleading as it it's given in 1974 but supposedly he's quoting himself from 1958. I'll just assume he's more paraphrasing then quoting and adjusting the so-called predictions as the years go buy. The Communist stuff is kind of dated and rob this gem of some pertinence. I'm not a John Bircher, and I don't know why they fell out of favor other than being Alynsk'ed. Which Presidential Candidate sounds like the tail end of the echos from the past?

To toil at National Review is to know what it’s like to read “Buckley must be spinning in his grave!” at the beginning of umpteen letters, e-mails, blog posts, and tweets from less-than-gruntled critics supremely assured of their originality. The beauty of this evergreen — and its cheap presumptions about a great man — is that it can be wielded with equal convenience by trolls of every political persuasion and in response to any number of detected heresies. But, with the whiff of bigotry and malice that so many smell in popular politics since the tranquil days when the last Bush...

Things that are going on today with the economy, and how the goverenmet is handling all of it, was specifically predicted back in 1958 by Robert Welch.

In 1958 Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, made some startling predictions against American Liberty. He believed there was a group of insiders intent on “the surrender of American sovereignty piece by piece and step by step to various international organizations of which the United Nations is the outstanding but far from the only example.” He laid out his predictions in 10 points and repeated them in a 1974 conference: 1. Greatly expanded government spending for every conceivable means of getting rid of ever larger sums of American money as wastefully as possible.

MONTGOMERY The state Senate may have been locked down for most of the year, but it did find time to endorse a widely discredited urban legend spread by the John Birch Society. The upper chamber passed a joint resolution April 10 sponsored by state Sen. Rusty Glover, R-Semmes, claiming that Canada, Mexico and the United States are moving toward a "North American Union" and working on construction of a "NAFTA Superhighway" to link the countries and report edly destroy their sovereignty. "It's about retaining independence," said John McManus, the president of the John Birch Society, in a phone interview Mon...

Several Oklahoma legislators are concerned that individuals and organizations are quietly working on plans to create a privately-operated tollway in Oklahoma. Many referred to Spain-based Cintra, which has been involved in the development of a proposed Trans-Texas Corridor. Cintra also took over the operation of the Indiana East-West Toll Road from the Indiana Department of Transportation in 2006. Oklahoma State Sen. Randy Brogdon and state representatives Eric Proctor, Richard Morrisette, Scott Inman and Charles Key all expressed concern that efforts to open up Oklahoma to a privately operated tollway system were being kept out of the view of the general...

It sounds almost too good to be true. State Sen. Bob Welch raised better than half a million dollars last year in his bid to challenge U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold this fall, yet his campaign paid staffers for its fund-raiser, Gateway Ventures, a mere $1,400 in 2003. How could a campaign spend so little to raise so much? Welch's folks chalk it up to being stingy with their checkbook. "We're as frugal with our (campaign) expenditures as Bob is with Wisconsinites' tax dollars," the Welch camp said in a statement issued earlier this year. But look at Welch's state campaign...

Recently, a JBS chapter leader accused me of lying when I pointed out that Robert Welch thought President Dwight D. Eisenhower was "a dedicated, conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy." It amazes me how, even at this late date, many Birch Society members still parrot the Birch party-line with respect to this matter. I obtained my photocopy of the unpublished version of The Politician from G-2 Army Intelligence. The copy in their files was first obtained circa January 1959 and appears to be an edition that was last updated by Welch in June 1958 but printed in August 1958. According...
