  • California Assembly OKs measure to ban carrying unloaded rifles in public

Carrying unloaded rifles in public would be prohibited under hotly contested legislation that passed the Assembly on Thursday. Assembly Bill 1527 cleared the lower house, 44-28, with no Republican support. Proposed by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-La Cañada Flintridge, the bill stems from the "open carry" movement in which gun-brandishing people protest against gun-control laws. The movement sparked headlines in 2009 for a rally outside an Arizona convention center where President Barack Obama was speaking. California cracked down on carrying unloaded handguns with a new law that took effect Jan. 1. Portantino's bill would expand that prohibition by targeting rifles. "Sooner...

BOTTINEAU It wouldn't be surprising if Jonathan Bartlett bleeds red, white and blue. The Bottineau resident has a deepening appreciation for this nation's founding fathers and early citizens and citizen soldiers. A few years ago, Bartlett was introduced to Project Appleseed, a combination heritage and marksmanship program conducted by the Revolutionary War Veterans Association. He was so captured by the experience that he continues to rise through the ranks of RWVA. "It was inspiring. It motivated me to be involved," said Bartlett. "Something really connected with the shooting aspect and the history of our founding. Our founders inspired our free...

I am looking to buy a rifle that would serve two purposes: primarily a long-distance shooter and secondarily a larger game taker downer :-) I like to shoot beyond 600 yards and I want a rifle to suit that purpose. From info I've gathered, I should get a larger-calibered rifle, with at least a 24" barrel. I would like to keep the rifle below 10lbs because I also want to hunt with it some day. I am interested in hunting elk and moose, eventually. So I am thinking of a .308.

So earlier this year, I came across a great deal, two late '60's Winchester model 94 30-30's, one was in decent shape and had an octagon barrel (unfortunately not the collectable one) and the other a total rust bucket I was just going to use for a wall piece. Paid $50 each for them, great deal! I got thinking last night that I should just do something crazy with the rust bucket it since it will never be a valuable rifle so I stripped the old blue off and started working on the pitted rust and it came to me....

The Mountaineers (2-0, 1-0 GARC) topped the Huskers (0-2, 0-1 GARC) in both guns, winning air rifle, 2354-2325, and smallbore, 2313-2285. Petra Zublasing Seniors Justin Pentz and Michael Kulbacki, junior Petra Zublasing, redshirt-freshman Thomas Kyanko and freshman Taylor Ciotola combined for the team’s scores. “Petra was the highlight, but there were a lot of good performances in there,” says coach Jon Hammond. “Overall it was a good, steady start to the season. Hopefully we will shoot higher...

Outdoor writer Jeffrey L. Frischkorn recently publicized discussions at the Ohio Division of Wildlife to open deer hunting to firearms other than certain handguns, shotguns and muzzle-loading rifles. From the article: As for the future of deer management in Ohio, that is a subject under review, said [Mike Tonkovich, the Ohio Division of Wildlife's deer management administrator]. The biologist is in the process of sending out a random survey of all licensed Ohio hunters. One of the questions being asked is whether hunters would support an antlerless-only muzzle-loading season in October. Also being explored is whether to liberalize the regulations...

Russia stops buying Kalashnikov The Russian army has said it will stop buying the country's famous Kalashnikov assault rifles until its designers come up with a genuinely new model. By Andrew Osborn, Moscow The current modification of the weapon – the AK-74 – was developed in the early 1970s and the defence ministry says its warehouses are "overflowing" with millions of the Soviet-era rifles, stocks of which are likely to last for a further twenty years. "The guns being offered to us are hardly any different from those in the warehouses," a defence ministry source told the daily Izvestia newspaper....

An open letter to ATF John R. Spencer, Chief Firearms Technology Branch Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Dear Chief Spencer, For some time, I’ve been hearing rumblings from sources in the firearms industry that your branch is going to classify .50 BMG upper conversions for AR-15 rifles as firearms, a departure from the past practice established by your office of considering them parts. I have since been informed this was confirmed by your office in a telephone conversation with a national firearms publication. Because this could have such profound and far-reaching effects, not only within the firearms industry,...

If I ever get gainful employment again, I plan to buy a rifle. I don't consider a 5.56mm to be a proper battle rifle, call me a doofus but I want a .30 caliber firearm with a shortish barrel. No AKs, that might come later. I have all the handguns I need, as far as She Who Must Be Obeyed knows anyway. Might pick up another or two along the way, but I want a long gun. Don't know squat about semi-auto rifles, but I am a good learner.

This is the shocking picture of a fully loaded assault rifle left unattended on the trunk of patrol car in a busy Seattle street. The bungling officers were nowhere to be seen after leaving the AR-15 on the trunk of their patrol car outside a busy hotel and shopping street on Monday night. Shockingly, after the officers returned, they failed to notice the menacing rifle and drove off. It was only after a woman chased the car as it drove away, that the officers realised their mistake. Passer-by Nick Gonzales, who photographed the shocking scene above, also alerted two bike...

Seattle police are looking into the "very embarrassing" circumstances that led to a semi-automatic assault rifle being left on the trunk lid of an unattended patrol vehicle in public.Everybody's done it. You place an item on top of a car only to remember later — after you or someone else has driven off. But when the forgetful individual is a Seattle police officer and the item is a semi-automatic rifle, it's more than a little embarrassing. It's also the focus of an internal investigation. Seattle police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb conceded Tuesday it was "very embarrassing" that a semi-automatic rifle...

Hey all, I'm looking into getting an AR15, but am totally overwhelmed by all the choices. What I want is something that's reliable, and has a rifle length barrel. Cheaper is better. I am not looking into getting a crazy customizable hyper-accurate super gun. Just a plinker. I've seen the Olympic Arms plinker, looked kinda rough.

This fall, we are moving from the city to the country, and I've been told by all my new neighbors that coyotes are a problem. What I want to do is bring them down quickly when they are in the house and yard area (about 7 acres). I'm not going out to the far reaches of my 100+ acres of woodlands to look for them, and I really don't care about messing up the pelts :-).Other considerationsThis will be my first long gun. I've strictly been a handgun range shooter up till now.I don't need to go to the cheaper side...

Copy the text of the email below or rewrite it in your own words and email it to: oira_submission@omb.eop.gov The comment period for the ATF’s proposed “temporary,” emergency regulation requiring firearms dealers to file reports every time someone purchases more than one semi-auto long gun was reopened, but that comment period closes this Tuesday, May 31. During the last comment period on this gun owners were outnumbered by the prohibitionists. That should NEVER happen! We outnumber them 10 to one and our response to outrageous proposals like this should reflect that numbers advantage. The ATF claims the reporting is necessary...

Colt on the Outs as Defense Department Opens Bids for Combat Rifles Published May 25, 2011 | Associated Press WASHINGTON -- For nearly a decade, Colt Defense went without a lobbyist. The legendary gun maker based in West Hartford, Conn., had an exclusive deal to provide combat rifles to the U.S. military and didn't need a hired gun looking out for the company's interests in Washington. Times have changed. After buying more than 700,000 Colt M4 carbines, the Defense Department has started a search for the rifle's successor, giving Colt's competitors the long-awaited chance to break the company's grip on...
