Oprah Winfrey’s OWN cable network is developing a two-part miniseries chronicling one of the ugliest and least-known chapters in U.S. history. In Tulsa, Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer (The Help) plays a journalist who investigates the 1921 Oklahoma race riots, where an estimated 300 people were believed to have been murdered amid post-WWI racial tension surrounding segregation laws and the prosperous black community of Greenwood. According to a 2011 New York Times story on the subject, “The Tulsa race riot of 1921 was rarely mentioned in history books, classrooms or even in private…an episode so brutal that this city, in...

Racial violence around the country is spreading into schools and growing in intensity. And thanks to YouTube, school district superintendents and the media are having a harder time denying it. The latest episode took place this week in Woodland Hills High School in Swissvale, a suburb of Pittsburgh. For two days, 70 black students – and some parents – were punching, kicking, and terrorizing themselves and neighbors. A “riot,” said Swissvale police chief Greg Geppert. All on video – a video “too graphic for WTAE news to show in its entirety.” “At least three of the people we see in...

There is a good amount of discussion on Twitter this morning about killing George Zimmerman now that he’s out on bail. But that hasn’t been the only action on Twitter calling for violent action. Police are investigating the “racially motivated” beating of a 27-year-old man who was walking home from midtown bars early Saturday when he said he was jumped by five to eight men who shouted “Trayvon” before the attack. The exclamation was an apparent reference to Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old from Miami who was shot and killed in February walking back to his father’s girlfriend’s house in Sanford. His shooter, George Zimmerman, has not been charged. The case of Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was killed by Zimmerman, a Hispanic crime-watch volunteer, has stirred conversations across the country about race, crime...

It's been 110 years Monday since the bloody overthrow of Wilmington's black government. Hundreds of residents and local leaders gathered over the weekend to dedicate the 1898 Memorial, marking the only coup d'etat in U.S. history. Many who came to see the memorial called it a step toward reconciliation. And it wasn't lost on Reverend John Veasey that the dedication came less than a week after the U.S. elected its first black president. "I'm just glad to see what has happened and is going to happen, not only in Wilmington but also in the United States and in the world....

"It's Greenwood time, it's Tulsa time . . . it's time to be paid for Tulsa's 1921 Race Riot, time to bring Greenwood back," Ogletree said during a three-hour event at Sanctuary Evangelistic Church, 1228 E. Fifth St. The program, which featured Ogletree; U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.; and Chicago Alderman Dorothy Tillman, was billed as a congressional hearing but sounded more like a revival meeting. About 100 police were sent to break up an unruly crowd that had gathered in the same neighborhood where riots broke out eight years ago after a black motorist who was killed by a police officer. The group grew, and people threw rocks and bottles at cars and buildings, said police spokesman Chip Wells. At least five people were injured and four were arrested, said Bill Doniel, another police spokesman. Two of those arrested were accused of shooting at police officers, Doniel said....

Allen, a 27-year-old mother of two from South Carolina, was visiting her family in York during the race riots in 1969. She and her family were driving through a white neighborhood when their car stalled on railroad...
