“Clinton's loss at the hands of Donald Trump amounted to the most surprising outcome in the history of modern electoral politics.” So writes David Catanese for usnews.com (11/11/16).Many of the pollsters proved to be wrong after all. To his credit, Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia cried mea culpa, declaring: “We were wrong, ok? The entire punditry industry. The entire polling industry. The entire analyst industry. And I want to take this opportunity to take my fair share of the blame. We were wrong.”“Success,” noted John F. Kennedy after he took responsibility for the fiasco that was the Bay of Pigs, “has...
  • Have Evangelicals Lost Their Credibility by Voting for Trump?

I find it ironic that the same people who have mocked us for years as hypocrites, bigots, haters, homophobes, transphobes, and worse now tell us that we have lost our moral credibility by voting for Trump. It is true that there are Christian leaders in other nations who feel that we (meaning, in particular, white evangelicals) have compromised our moral witness by voting for Trump in such overwhelming numbers (81 percent of white evangelicals voted for him). And it is true that it is difficult to reconcile our historic mantra of “character matters” with a vote for Trump, unless we are...

President-elect Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to nominating pro-life justices to the Supreme Court but suggested an unwillingness to go further to ban abortion nationwide. Asked specifically in a "60 Minutes" interview on CBS Sunday if he wants the Supreme Court to repeal the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide, Trump said that at most the decision would mean women would have to travel to pro-abortion states to get an abortion. "Here's what's going to happen," Trump told Leslie Stahl of the news magazine program. "I'm going to — I'm pro-life. The judges will be pro-life." He continued:...

In an interview Sunday with CBS’s “60 Minutes,” President-elect Donald Trump said he is pro-life and would appoint pro-life judges, adding that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, “it would go back to the states.” “They’ll be pro-life,” Trump said about the judges he would appoint. “They’ll be in terms of the whole gun situation, we know the 2nd Amendment and everybody’s talking about the 2nd Amendment, and they’re trying to dice it up and change it. They’re going to be very pro-2nd Amendment, but having to do with abortion, what it—if it ever were overturned, it would go back...

Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards says, “that Roe Vs. Wade was on the ballot in this election” that led to a presidential victory for Donald Trump. She also says people have been “dropping off baked goods” at Planned Parenthood facilities following the election results. During an interview on MSNBC on Wednesday Richards said, “I think that Roe Vs. Wade was on the ballot in this election. I know that Mr. Trump has said that in his acceptance speech that he was going to govern for all Americans — not just ones that voted for him — and I hope that...
  • ‘Mortal sin’ to vote Democratic, says San Diego Catholic church flier, linking Hillary to Satan

SAN DIEGO — The Sunday bulletin of San Diego’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Oct. 16 wasn’t very different from all the others. Seven pages. A welcome to newcomers. A Mass schedule. But there, between the prayers of healing for the ill and the deployed and a reminder about a parent-child chastity luncheon for ages 11 and up, was an extra flier. On it was printed a memo, written in Spanish and English, and titled, in part, “How to vote like a Catholic.”....

The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez urged his fellow Hispanics in America to consider Hillary Clinton’s radical pro-abortion position before voting in November. Rodriguez, a strong pro-life advocate in the Hispanic American community and the president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, emailed supporters Monday to explain how extreme Clinton’s abortion policies are, the Christian Post reports. “Latinos are pro-life. Latinos, whether they be Evangelical or Catholic, must never sacrifice truth on the altar of political expediency,” Rodriguez wrote. “By asking for our support, Sec. Clinton is asking us to sacrifice our most cherished values. She is asking us to defy...

Now that we are done with the presidential debates, with just a few weeks until Election Day, the choice for the country could not be more stark. Hillary Clinton promises to continue the economic and foreign policy path of Barack Obama, which has weakened our country and emboldened our enemies. By expanding government spending, forgiving student loan debt, granting amnesty to millions of illegals, raising taxes, continuing with Obamacare, Madam President would massively pile on debt to a nation already leveraged to the hilt. As for Donald Trump, he will streamline government, cut taxes, incentivize businesses to bring assets back...

As Donald Trump’s lewd remarks and insults have created a major divide in the political arena, the surprising support from evangelicals have surprised everyone. Pastor Franklin Graham took to his Facebook page Saturday to defend the evangelical leaders who have remained in Trump’s corner. “A lot of people are slamming evangelicals for supposedly giving Donald J. Trump a pass. That’s simply not true. No one is giving him a pass. I’m certainly not, and I’ve not met an evangelical yet who condones his language or inexcusable behavior from over a decade ago. However, he has apologized to his wife, his...

The Culture of Death has gained a strong foothold in America over the passivity of the dominant Christian population. It’s time to stand up and put an end to it. This book is a powerful weapon for the culture wars. “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants…” (Deut 30:19) This is a very simple guide for the Christian voter—don’t vote for the party and people who champion the Culture of...

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) is throwing his support behind controversial presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. "I'm 100 percent," Santorum said Tuesday during an interview on Fox News's "On The Record," when asked if he was supporting or endorsing Trump. "That's endorse." Santorum, who backed Marco Rubio after dropping out of the race himself in February, said he spoke with Trump more than a week ago and he said the businessman asked for his support. The former Senator indicated a top reason for endorsing Trump is the vacant Supreme Court seat. Santorum said he made a couple suggestions...

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump appeared on Fox News last night, where he fielded a question from a viewer who wanted him to “name one specific thing he would do to protect the sanctity of human life.” The GOP candidate quickly turned his focus to judicial nominees: “I will protect [life] and the biggest way you can protect it is through the Supreme Court and putting people in the court. And actually the biggest way you can protect it, I guess, is by electing me president.” Trump added that he expects to name “as many as five” high court...

(RNS) More than 50 conservative Catholic activists and political leaders have come out in support of Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz in an effort to shore up Catholic backing for Cruz as an alternative to Donald Trump. Among them is a priest from South Carolina who may be skirting the edges of his own church’s policies against clerics becoming involved in politics. Trump is currently leading the three-man GOP field and has drawn strong primary support from Catholic voters despite his controversial rhetoric and past stands on key issues like abortion rights, which he once supported. The Catholics endorsing Cruz,...

You can see the exact moment last week that Donald Trump made up his mind on whether women would face criminal punishment once he signed new restrictions into law. He is at a town hall with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, and, after Matthews badgers him for a while, he finally answers the question. “The answer is ... that,” Trump says, eyes looking to the side in thought, “there has to be some form of punishment.” He punctuates “has” with a hand gesture. Done. Final. But as it turns out — and as it has turned out repeatedly over the course of...

I agree with Quin Hillyer. Donald Trump’s comments on abortion — first advocating punishing women who abort then backtracking hours later — were indeed a “mess.” They played into the hands of abortion advocates in every way — helping caricature pro-lifers as “anti-woman” and raising the specter of back-alley abortions. So far, Trump’s pro-life conversion has mainly served to make Planned Parenthood look good (he can’t stop praising the nation’s largest abortion provider) and the pro-life movement look bad. He simply has no idea how to talk about arguably the most sensitive issue in politics.
