During World War I, the thousands to American soldiers heading to France and Belgium were given pocket Bibles with the forward written by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917: “The Bible is the Word of Life. I beg that you will read it and find this out for yourselves, -read, not little snatches here and there, but long passages that will really be the road to the heart of it. You will find it full of real men and women not only, but also of the things you have wondered about and been troubled about all your life, as men have...

Credit: Mazue/ Vatican City, Oct 8, 2015 / 10:38 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Heavy criticism of the West imposing secular values on Africa in exchange for aid emerged as a theme from the continent's bishops, as the Vatican's synod on the family kicks off its first week. From press conferences to individual interviews, multiple prelates voiced concern over what Pope Francis has termed “ideological colonization,” in which Western nations have made the acceptance of legislature favoring gay rights and “marriage” contingent on receiving financial aid. “It's one thing...

The sexual left wants someone’s head, now that it’s compelled the Vatican to backtrack on support for Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis.Liberals are now campaigning for Pope Francis to fire Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, who serves in the influential post of Papal Nuncio to the United States, one of the Church’s most important diplomatic postings. Vigano is credited with setting up the now controversial meeting between the Pope and Kentucky Council clerk Kim Davis that was immediately denounced by advocates for gay marriage. One of the groups calling for his head includes the George Soros-funded “Faithful America” that is running...

Russia – in the form of the Soviet Union – used to be America’s greatest enemy. Ronald Reagan called it the “Evil Empire.” “One nation under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 in response to “godless Communism.” The United States was different, Americans were told. We believed in God. The Russians were officially atheistic. How times have changed. The following is from “Who’s Godless Now? Russia Says It’s U.S.” “At the height of the Cold War, it was common for American conservatives to label the officially atheist Soviet Union a ‘godless nation.’ “More than two decades...

He says Vatican personnel initiated contact with Davis’ camp on Sept. 14 saying the pope wanted to meet her.

Her lawyer is now feuding with the Vatican. A Vatican official says there is now "a sense of regret" that Pope Francis ever met Kim Davis, reports Reuters—and that could be bad news for the archbishop who set up the meeting. Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the Vatican's ambassador to the US, was appointed by Benedict XVI and is known for his hardline stance against same-sex marriage, the Washington Post reports. Vatican officials say Francis wasn't briefed on the Davis case and the meeting "should not be considered a form of support," which has left church insiders wondering whether Vigano deliberately...

On Friday, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi released an extraordinary statement, personally approved by Pope Francis, debunking nearly everything that has been reported this week about a meeting between the pope and Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The private meeting between Davis, her husband, Joe, and the pope, which Davis’ attorney says took place at the Apostolic Nunciature (Vatican Embassy) in Washington, D.C. last Thursday? It didn’t happen. Instead, Davis was one of “several dozen persons who had...

The last temptation of Christ may not have occurred in the desert when Satan confronted Jesus. In the biblical book of Matthew, Christ goes alone into the desert and fasts for 40 days. While he is starving, the Devil confronts and tempts him: “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” Christ answers, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The Christian church, both Catholic and Protestant, has faced a similar temptation to turn stone into bread in the form of socialism....

Over the past several days, GOP hopefuls looked to curry favor with hardcore culture warriors. Here's what happened.Last week was one for the political books. The Pope brought his message about the need to help the poor and deal with climate change to America, apparently leading Catholic Supreme Court Justices Scalia, Alito and Thomas to boycott his historic speech to a joint session of Congress. At the same time, the evangelical activist community held its annual Values Voter Summit featuring many of the GOP presidential candidates who once would have been excited to celebrate the pope’s visit but were instead...

Almost exactly twenty years have passed since St. John Paul II addressed the UN on October 5, 1995. His message then contrasted vividly with the one delivered this week by Pope Francis, and the difference is not only a matter of calendar references. Notice this paragraph: As a Christian, my hope and trust are centered on Jesus Christ, the two thousandth anniversary of whose birth will be celebrated at the coming of the new millennium. We Christians believe that in his Death and Resurrection were fully revealed God's love and his care for all creation. Jesus Christ is for us...

One of the world’s worst-kept secrets is the Holy See’s high regard for the United Nations. Since Paul VI, popes have appeared before its General Assembly to express their “great esteem,” as Francis remarked in his recent UN address, for its work. Not all Catholics entertain favorable views of the UN. They point, for instance, to its relentless efforts to promote gender theory nonsense and evils such as “reproductive rights.” The Holy See, however, maintains that, despite such faults, the UN is worth engaging. There are, I think, three reasons for this.First, the Church teaches—and many Catholic natural law scholars hold—that...

WHO REALLY IS POPE FRANCIS? Which one of these is Pope Bergoglio: the voice of the oppressed, the poor, the marginalized or the voice of the oppressors? In Cuba we witnessed a political, never pastoral, WHO REALLY IS POPE FRANCIS? by dqban229/27/2015Pope Bergoglio becoming the voice of the oppressors. He ignored the cry for help of 11 million Cubans marginalized, oppressed, the poorest among the poor enslaved under a brutal Stalinist regime for over 56 years. The Pope in Cuba called for "reconciliation" which in Francis' Orwellian lexicon means not to create "lios" (not to revolt), ask he asked the...

In a disturbing turn of events, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, a graduate of a Jesuit high school, reportedly used the appearance of Pope Francis in Philadelphia to push the gay agenda. Nutter had previously promised to ask the pope to "end judgment" of LGBT people by the church and then today, the mayor used his public appearance before hundreds of thousands of Catholics who gathered to see the pope to do just that. Speaking at Independence Hall before the pope, the mayor said "In America, everyone has rights...Our lesbian, gay and bisexual citizens continue to fight for equality." "Keep fighting...

Here is a Vatican translation of the address Pope Francis gave this afternoon in Philadelphia, at a meeting with immigrants on the theme of religious freedom. ZENIT's transcription and translation of his few off-the-cuff remarks are found in brackets. * * * Dear Friends, [good afternoon,] One of the highlights of my visit is to stand here, before Independence Mall, the birthplace of the United States of America. It was here that the freedoms which define this country were first proclaimed. The Declaration of Independence stated that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their...

  • Religious liberty: Ted Cruz’s conservative ‘rocket fuel’ (Why the senator could win Iowa caucus)

To watch Ted Cruz speak at a gathering of religious conservatives in Washington Friday was to more fully grasp why the Republican senator from Texas could win the Iowa caucus next year. In two words: religious liberty. Cruz has only one rival in the Republican field — former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — who raises the issue as aggressively. But between the two of them, Cruz has a reputation as a fighter, having tangled repeatedly with GOP leadership in Congress on a host of issues since he was elected in 2010. And the grassroots wants a brawler. Iowa conservatives, who...

When it comes to considering the arguments of newly resurgent Christian progressives, we hold these truths to be self-evident: Jesus was not a socialist, the Bible is not an economics textbook, and while scripture commands believers to help the poor, it also commands the poor to help themselves. As Pope Francis gains rock-star status on the economic left, Christians would do well to remember not just scripture, but the economic reality of recent world experience. This morning, the pope addressed Congress with relative restraint. Rather than decrying the perceived excesses of global capitalism — calling it, as he once...
