WILKES-BARRE — Luzerne County corrections officer Kristopher Moules and inmate Timothy Darnelle Gilliam Jr. smashed through a closed elevator door at the county prison and fell several floors down the elevator shaft to their deaths Monday night, county Manager C. David Pedri said Tuesday. Describing the situation as a “freak accident,” Pedri said at a news conference that “something happened” to cause the door to jump off its track and open. He said the county has retained a state expert to identify the problem, and he promised to publicly release the expert’s findings and implement any recommended corrective action.

(KCRA) All lanes of westbound Interstate 80 and southbound Highway 65 in Roseville are shut down as police search for at least two people after shots were fired, officers said. Westbound I-80 between Rocklin and Eureka roads was closed just after 6 a.m., and no vehicles are allowed on southbound Highway 65 at Galleria Boulevard. Boston police are being warned to check their cars before driving off after a cop's vehicle was tampered with. The officer, whose name is not being released, was driving away from the police department's District 1 station, in central Boston, yesterday when his rear wheel came off. He was not injured in the incident but when the cop took the car to the shop for repairs, a mechanic found the car had been tampered with.
