The Las Vegas police shooters were identified as two Neo-Nazi socialists. Neighbors said “Jared” and “Amanda” had talked about killing police officers then going underground until the time was right to come out and kill some more. They were also meth-heads. The conspiracy nuts were drug addicts. The Las Vegas Review Journal reported: The shooters were a married couple thought to be in their late 20s who were new to the Las Vegas Valley, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation. Police are looking into their links to the white supremacy movement and found swastika symbols during...

A veteran died of a stroke after Veterans Affairs police beat him because he refused to wait any longer for treatment at a VA hospital in California. Now his widow is suing the government over the brutality that led to his death. Jonathan Montano had been at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Loma Linda, Calif. for four hours with a shunt (a needle apparatus) in his arm, awaiting dialysis. Tired of biding his time, he decided to head to a different VA hospital in Long Beach, and asked his wife Norma to get the car. But instead of...

On-camera interrogations are increasingly common with state and local police, and now in a sharp change in policy, the FBI will require its 13,000 agents to record nearly every suspect interview starting next month. It can be a powerful eyewitness, according to Assistant Chief Russ Hamill of the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland, near Washington D.C. "It probably benefits officers far more than it ever hinders an officer," Hamill said.

A Vermont woman who sneaked up behind a police officer while under arrest and allegedly tried to slit his throat with a knife was found not guilty of attempted murder. Jennifer Berube, 40, was acquitted of attempted second-degree murder and a lesser charge of attempted aggravated assault on Friday by a jury in Rutland, a city in western Vermont about 60 miles south of Burlington. Surveillance footage from inside the station house showed Berube grabbing Nguyen by the neck with a 2-inch blade in her hand before getting overpowered by several other officers. Nguyen suffered a cut near his jugular...

LARKSPUR, Colo. (CBS4) – Douglas County deputies are warning the public to stay away from three police and military trained dogs. The German shepherds disappeared from a private kennel in Larkspur after someone released them. The dogs are highly trained, but the sheriff’s office says they are not at all killers. They worry that if approached the wrong way by someone the dogs could react aggressively, making finding them a priority for their office. Spurlock said anyone who happens to spot one of the three dogs should not approach them, but instead call the sheriff’s office.

A 19-month-old toddler was critically injured after a police flash bang was tossed into his bed during a police raid at a Habersham County home on Wednesday. “It’s my baby. He’s my only baby. He didn’t deserve any of this,” said Alecia Phonesavanh, the mother of the child. “It landed in his playpen and exploded right in his face,” said Phonesavanh. The child is now being treated at Grady hospital and has a 50 percent chance of survival.

I guess you can put this in the “Now Only in Chicago, But Soon To Be in Your Backyard As Well” file. Writing for Breitbart, Warner Todd Huston discovered government officials in Will County, located just outside of Chicago, had issued a fine based on nothing more than a private individual’s Facebook post, no due process necessary: "The police department of a Chicago area forest preserve district used a local woman’s social media post as a basis to send her a citation in the mail after she made a Facebook post about a county park." Due to a number of...

On August 20, 2013, Sherman police stopped Lesa Surratt’s vehicle for failing to signal a lane change. An officer removed Surratt from the vehicle. From there, she was placed in the rear of a patrol car but without performing a search, the suit claims. Surratt’s passenger, Monica Garza, was also placed in the patrol car. Brian McClarin, a narcotics officer, had directed the traffic stop. The complaint acknowledges that Surratt removed a small amount of cocaine she was concealing and began swallowing it. One of the officers realized what was going on “and climbed in the back seat, across the...

From the First Circuit’s decision Friday in Gericke v. Begin (1st Cir. May 24, 2014): This case raises an important question about an individual’s First Amendment right to film a traffic stop by a police officer. Carla Gericke attempted to film Sergeant Joseph Kelley as he was conducting a late-night traffic stop. Shortly thereafter, she was arrested and charged with several crimes, including a violation of New Hampshire’s wiretapping statute. Gericke was not brought to trial. She subsequently sued the Town of Weare, its police department, and the officers who arrested and charged her, alleging in pertinent part that the...

The Arkansas police officers who fired 15 rounds into a fleeing vehicle, killing both the driver and passenger, were justified in doing so, the Supreme Court ruled Monday. In 2004, police officers in West Memphis ended a high-speed car chase by firing shots into the fleeing vehicle. The drivers of the car weren’t armed and were killed as a result of the firing, leading many to argue the use of force by the police squad was excessive. Not so, declared Justice Samuel Alito, who wrote the decision for the court. “Under the circumstances present in this case,” Mr. Alito said,...

His parents said they were so concerned that they called police. Officers who showed up at Rodger’s doorstep for a mental health check in April, however, found a well-mannered if shy young man whom they concluded posed no risk. They hadn’t seen the videos, and by the time law enforcement had, it was too late: Rodger had gone on a deadly rampage. The sheriff’s office “was not aware of any videos until after the shooting rampage occurred,” Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover said. Sheriff Bill Brown has defended the officers’ actions, but the case highlights the challenges...

A court in India's capital has dropped a weapons charge against a New York City police officer and is allowing him to leave the country, his lawyer said Saturday. Officer Manny Encarnacion was arrested in March while visiting his wife in New Delhi after Indian airport authorities discovered three bullets he had accidentally packed in his luggage. He had been out on bail since his arrest, but was barred from leaving India until the case was resolved. Before leaving for India, Encarnacion went to a police firing range and put the bullets in a coat pocket, according to New York...

Remembering 60 years back is hard for anyone, but for Melvyn Amrine, it's especially challenging. Melvyn was diagnosed with Alzheimer's three years ago. For his wife, Doris, it's been hard to watch. But she says something happened recently to remind her that the man she fell in love with is still here. "It's special, because even though the mind doesn't remember everything, the heart remembers," Doris says. It happened the day before Mother's Day, when Melvyn, who normally needs help just walking around the block, turned up missing. Police dispatch in Little Rock, Arkansas, put out the call. They eventually...

A two-vehicle wreck involving a Varnell police officer Wednesday evening resulted in one man being airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. The wreck happened in front of North Whitfield Middle School on Cleveland Highway and involved a Varnell patrol car driven by an officer identified by officials as Patrick Hayes and a Jeep Cherokee, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) public information office. The driver of the Cherokee, David Gambrell, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. No further information was available late Thursday. The Erie County sheriff says he's done making public comments about a cellphone surveillance device used by his police agency to gather information on persons of interest. Sheriff Tim Howard told WGRZ Thursday that he won't publicly discuss the matter any longer because doing so could adversely impact investigations. A stingray is a device that mimics a cell tower and thereby tricks all wireless devices on the same network into communicating with it. Howard told Erie County legislators last week that the stingray surveillance device his office has owned since 2008 is used only for tracking a person's movements, not...

Oakland officials are investigating why a former police officer is collecting $52,488 a year in medical disability benefits from the city even though he has been working as an FBI agent in Boston. The unusual case of FBI Special Agent Aaron McFarlane, 41, came to the attention of Oakland officials after the agent was identified last week as the federal officer who shot and killed a key figure last year in the Boston Marathon bombing investigation. The disability benefit that McFarlane is collecting under the California Public Employees' Retirement System is awarded when a worker is unable to perform the...

Salinas police fatally shot a man armed with gardening shears midday Tuesday outside a Sanborn Road bakery, Cmdr. Vince Maiorana said. The officer-involved fatality is the second this month and the third for the year including the deaths of Osman Hernandez and Angel Ruiz, respectively. Last year, Salinas police killed one: Jose Ruiz, on Williams Road. Officers responded about noon Tuesday to a home on the 700 block of Elkington Avenue when a woman reported a man had jumped her backyard fence and attempted to attack her dog with scissors, Maiorana said. When officers encountered the man at the intersection...

Salinas police killed a man earlier today, claiming to the local media that they were in fear for their lives after he had waved a pair of garden shearers in their direction, indicating he was going to shred them to pieces. But then a witness posted a video online, contradicting those claims, showing the man trying to walk away from the cops as they move in on him barking orders with their guns drawn. Read the statement below and view the video above and tell me what you think. According to the Californian: Attempts at hailing the man in English...
