High Point police say the woman who died in a head-on collision Thursday was posting selfies and updating her Facebook status moments before the fatal crash. Courtney Ann Sanford, 32, of Clemmons, updated her Facebook status with: “The happy song makes me HAPPY” one minute before the crash was called in to police, investigators say. “These posts were brought to investigators’ attention by family and friends,” said Lt. Charles Lanier with the High Point Police Dept. “Investigators say that she also was taking pictures of herself while driving. The posts were very close proximity in time to our first calls...

Poverty Point up for distinctionPublished: Thursday, July 14, 2011, 12:20 PM By The Associated Press MONROE -- Poverty Point State Historic Site's prehistoric earthworks in West Carroll Parish took a giant leap toward inclusion on the United Nations' World Heritage List when U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said he will propose the site to be considered as a U.S. nomination. The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's World Heritage List includes fewer than 1,000 sites, and among them are the Grand Canyon, the Great Wall of China and the Statue of Liberty. Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi's armed forces are not close to breaking point despite hundreds of allied air strikes, American military chiefs have said. Adm Mike Mullen told a US Congress committee Col Gaddafi's troops still had 10 times the rebels' firepower. At the same hearing, Defence Secretary Robert Gates reiterated the US would put no "boots on the ground" in Libya. Rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces appear to have reached a stalemate in their fight for control of the country. In recent days, rebels have been urging international forces to conduct more air strikes. Adm Mullen told the House of Representatives...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: "The Occupation of the Wisconsin Capitol Continues for a Third Day." Those are not my words. That's the headline of a story in the Communist Party USA's People's World website, and according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the AFL-CIO national president Richard Trumka is expected to join thousands of demonstrators at noon in Wisconsin today. That's sorta like the head of the Muslim Brotherhood showing up at Tahrir Square in Cairo. A check of headlines around the world is very upsetting. It is not comforting. None of this was supposed to happen. It was all supposed to...

ISTANBUL—The point man for the Obama administration's financial wars on Iran, North Korea and al Qaeda, Stuart Levey, has decided to leave his senior U.S. Treasury Department post at what is turning out to be a particularly critical time. Mr. Levey's departure will leave President Barack Obama without the principal architect of Washington's economic-sanctions campaign against Tehran, just as that campaign is likely to be ramped up following the breakdown of talks among Iran, the U.S. and a bloc of global powers on Saturday. The negotiations, held in Turkey, were aimed at curtailing Iran's nuclear program. With no date set...

The NHS Direct helpline is at ‘breaking point’ as parts of Britain experience the worst flu outbreak in a decade. Patients calling the service are being forced to wait up to two days before they can speak to a nurse, and managers have launched an emergency recruitment drive. GPs in the worst-affected areas are being paid up to £188 an hour to work over Christmas and help deal with soaring numbers of cases. (Snip) The latest infection rate figures show that there are now 87.1 cases per 100,000 people, up from 32.8 per 100,000 last week.

RUSH: This is not a crazy document at all. I mean, the Republican Pledge, nothing crazy about it at all, basic, common sense positions. I'd like somebody to ask Mike Castle, "Do you agree with this?" "Olympia Snowe, do you agree with this?" "Susan Collins, do you agree?" "Senator McCain, do you agree with this Pledge?" I want to know what these RINOs have to say about it. And the Democrats, guess what they're saying? The Democrats are saying, "Well, this could threaten Social Security." Honest to God. The Democrats, right out of Page 1 of the playbook are saying...

BOSTON – Democratic governors facing grim budget choices, lingering unemployment and angry voters are pointing a finger at their colleagues in Democratic-controlled Washington to explain this year’s toxic political climate. Few will fault President Barack Obama directly for their party’s plight heading into the fall midterm elections, but the chief executives gathered here for the National Governors Association (NGA) meeting believe the Congress and White House have made an already difficult year worse. While almost uniformly grateful for the financial windfall they enjoyed from the stimulus legislation, the Democrats believe it wasn’t sold well to the public and more still...

President Obama's job approval rating has fallen to 47 percent in the latest Gallup poll, the lowest ever recorded for any president at this point in his term. WEST POINT, NY -- President Obama will deliver his address on the new way forward in Afghanistan and Pakistan at the US Military Academy at West Point this evening. He's scheduled to arrive at the school at 7:15 pm ET, speak at 8 pm, and depart back for Washington, DC, at 9:15 pm. In that short time, the president is unlikely to see the sub-standard provisions given the next generation of American fighting men and women that were allowed to degrade over the previous decade. That's the judgment, at any rate, of the independent board charged with supervising West Point,...

Hundreds of emails from Hondurans flooded my in-box last week after I reported on the military's arrest of President Manuel Zelaya, as ordered by the Supreme Court, and his subsequent banishment from the country. Mr. Zelaya's violations of the rule of law in recent months were numerous. But the tipping point came 10 days ago, when he led a violent mob that stormed a military base to seize and distribute Venezuelan-printed ballots for an illegal referendum. All but a handful of my letters pleaded for international understanding of the threat to the constitutional democracy that Mr. Zelaya presented. One phrase...

West Point - President George W. Bush made his third visit to West Point Tuesday to speak with Cadets about the state of the military and how the world has changed during his eight years in office. President Bush thanked the Cadets for their service to the country. “You came to this academy in a time of war, knowing all the risks that come with military service,” said the President, who was the commencement speaker in 2002 and 2006. “I want to thank you for making the noble and selfless decision to serve our country.” President Bush met later in...

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5, 2008 – Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev’s threat today to deploy missiles targeting proposed U.S. missile defenses in Eastern Europe misses the point that the system will be purely defensive and will pose no threat to Russia, a Pentagon spokesman said today. “These are interceptors,” Bryan Whitman said of the system that will include 10 missile silos in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic. “And they are designed to protect our European allies as well as the … United States from an emerging ballistic missile threat from the Middle East.” Medvedev made headlines during...
