Japanese police are hunting a poetry-writing killer after the bodies of five people were found in a tiny mountain village. The five victims represent a third of the population of the hamlet in western Yamaguchi prefecture, where police found three corpses on Sunday after two houses were burned to the ground. Investigators on Monday discovered the bodies of two more people, who reports said appeared to have been battered to death. All five of the dead were in their 70s or 80s. The chief suspect is a 63-year-old villager at whose home police found a "haiku" poem stuck to the...

“Year of meteors! Brooding year!” -Walt Whitman A remarkable astronomical event also occurred over the northeastern United States 153 years ago today on the night of July 20th, known as the Great Meteor Procession of 1860. And with it came a mystery of poetry, art and astronomy that was only recently solved in 2010. A meteor procession occurs when an incoming meteor breaks up upon reentry into our atmosphere at an oblique angle. The result can be a spectacular display, leaving a brilliant glowing train in its wake. Unlike early morning meteors that are more frequent and run into the...

When it was Katie Helm's turn to speak, she knew what to do with her brilliant protest poem, "If My Vagina Was a Gun," noting the hypocrisy of Texas conservatives. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss.

Rush fans can relax. The band is now officially in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Canadian rockers were welcomed into the musical fraternity at Thursday’s 28th annual induction ceremony by the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins. At the beginning of the Nokia Theatre event, the audience was already administering a standing ovation to the group. “We’ve been saying for a long time that this wasn’t a big deal,” drummer-lyricist Neil Peart told the crowd, most of whom came out to specifically support the band. “It turns out, it kind of is.” …

REMEMBRANCE of EASTER 2005 Crowd my eyes, you bevies of daffodils, And you forsythias in throngs of cheer, Dandelion galaxies and fountains of trees. Fill my mouth with the breath of hyacinths, you purple air And you roistering breeze. And you quince-buds so eager, you swelling seeds, You squirrels running stitches across the loom Of woven grasses, inflorescent weeds; Jasmine-bush, loop me with your lariats of perfume. Fill me, small birds, with your versicles, And chuckled replies. She is bleeding from the mouth and eyes. Sate me then, Sun, all dapple and spangle Crowd out all else Lade me and...

It had been nearly two decades since I owned a cell phone when I decided recently to purchase an ATT cell phone, using their GoPhone program. The idea was/is to have a device to reach others via speech from a semi-remote location in case of emergency, and do so with minimum hassle or expense. I'm sure there are millions who seek the same. Now that I have the phone and have successfully disabled any texting and web applications (not without first being dinged for any and all fumbling with the buttons), I receive bogus phone calls from god-knows-who spammeisters, with...

LAST SUMMER while driving home to Texas after participating in the first annual Artistic Horizons show in Bozeman, MT, Denise LaRue Mahlke swung through Yellowstone National Park. “One of the things that grabbed me there were the geyser pools,” she recalls. “They were infatuating to me. It was magical how they all looked so different. Some were like mud pots in opaque greens or reds. Others were clear, giant pools that looked incredibly deep and almost iridescent in shades of emerald and sapphire. One reminded me of a peacock feather. I could have stood and stared at them for hours,...

Here are two old songs to ponder and enjoy for what they were, and for what they meant at that time. I don't compare them to each other, the songs have been flying to and fro in my head, so perhaps they 'want to be written about'. In this corner you have Sir Donovan Leitch of Scotland, made his fame in England with Mellow Yellow, Wear Your Love Like Heaven and others. People forget that 1967 didn't just bring us Sergeant Pepper, we also heard a most intriquing stanza of First there is mountain, then thereis no mountain, then there...

It is quite conceivable, therefore, that, when he bothers with politics at all, Dylan's political outlook is conservative. His emphasis on personal, as opposed to societal, salvation could very possibly leave him feeling most at home with a political philosophy that emphasizes the individual's right to be left alone to his own search for God. John Wesley Harding appeared at a time when the indescribable revulsion felt by the young toward Lyn- don Johnson was at its zenith; yet, in a time of ornate, kaleidoscopic record covers, John Wesley Harding had an Americana cover. Dylan's declaration (Continued on page 57)...

We're not gonna take it. Hard to believe this is now a conservative anthem...but I guess it is.

With the debate over gun control heating up, a retired volunteer at a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign made a timely find. Ernie Gullerud, a former professor of social work at the university, came upon a previously unpublished poem by Carl Sandburg titled "A Revolver," which addresses the issue of guns and violence.

There's so much bad news in the world now, especially for folk on our side of the political spectrum. So it's important to take a few minutes now and then to realise that it is not ALL doom and gloom out there.
