Gov. Phil Murphy disclosed Saturday he has a tumor on his kidney that is 90 percent likely to be cancerous and will soon undergo surgery. Murphy, 62, told NJ Advance Media that doctors caught it at an early stage and have “complete confidence” they’ll be able to fully remove the tumor. He said he does not expect he’ll have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment. “The expectation is that overwhelmingly, assuming nothing happens on the operating table or you don’t get an infection or something, you’re back on your feet and back in the game without any impairment going forward,”...

WILDWOOD-President Trump has come and gone and the only remaining evidence is a happy mayor and fistfuls of dollars in the pockets of local businesses and hotels who would otherwise have been continuing their long wait for the summer tourism season. Hotels were at capacity and businesses were active as tens of thousands of Trump supporters came from near and far, some waiting days to be the first to see the President at Tuesday’s rally. It was a small, but appreciated local economic boost for a city that lays nearly dormant from November through April every year. Wildwood is New...

New Jersey will become the first state to require that builders take into account the impact of climate change, including rising sea levels, in order to win government approval for projects, Gov. Philip D. Murphy plans to announce on Monday. The move by Mr. Murphy, a Democrat, is part of a widening effort by states to use regulations to address worsening climate conditions and to aggressively counteract the Trump administration’s push to roll back environmental regulations. “This is not abstract for us,” Mr. Murphy said in an interview. “This is real. The dangers are there.” New Jersey’s initiative is believed...

Governor Phil Murphy today signed legislation (S1963) mandating comprehensive disclosure and transparency requirements for the system of civil asset forfeiture. “New Jersey law enforcement agencies currently have no permanent statutory requirement to disclose civil asset forfeitures,” said Governor Murphy. “This legislation would boost confidence in our justice system by requiring county prosecutors to track and report data on this practice. Allowing the public to understand how assets are being seized, where seized funds go, and where forfeited property is going is a huge step forward for transparency and accountability.” Under the bill, county prosecutors would submit quarterly reports to the...

TRENTON, N.J. — The Democratic governor of New Jersey has signed a bill into law that grants $9.5 million to family planning groups in the state, including the abortion and contraception giant Planned Parenthood, after the organization declined to comply with new Health and Human Services (HHS) rules and consequently lost federal Title X funding. “Today, I signed a bill replacing Title X funding to ensure access to health care and family planning resources,” Gov. Patricia Kambach couldn’t bear to watch a crew demolish her longtime neighbor’s home this month, so she went inside her own house in Woodbridge, New Jersey, where she has lived since John F. Kennedy was president. “I lived here 56 years, and it’s hard,” said Kambach. Hard but not rare. The state has bought and torn down 145 homes since 2013 in Woodbridge, with eight homes demolished this month alone. Dozens more are slated to be torn down in the near future. It’s all part of an effort to get ahead of climate change. Some neighborhoods in this town of...

Whenever a member of law enforcement shoots his or her gun, the public needs to be kept informed. When three officers open fire on a city street outside a public housing complex, striking two men, cars and an occupied home, that need to be informed multiplies exponentially. And beyond that, the public also needs to be assured by city leaders that their safety and concerns matter. Despite calls from members of the community for him to address what happened, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop has been silent on the police shooting Monday night that left a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old...

Officials did not definitively link A-Hady to the shooting but said the searches were...
