Whenever a member of law enforcement shoots his or her gun, the public needs to be kept informed.
When three officers open fire on a city street outside a public housing complex, striking two men, cars and an occupied home, that need to be informed multiplies exponentially. And beyond that, the public also needs to be assured by city leaders that their safety and concerns matter.
Despite calls from members of the community for him to address what happened, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop has been silent on the police shooting Monday night that left a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old injured.
The city spokeswoman has said it didnt appear the officers violated state Attorney General guidelines, but she hasnt elaborated.
The county prosecutor, whose office investigates all police-involved shootings, released a statement saying fireworks were being shot off in the area at the time and that the circumstances remain under investigation.

Fireworks involved in Jersey City police shooting that left 2 wounded: prosecutor
Three Jersey City police officers fired their weapons in an incident that left two men wounded and community leaders demanding answers on what exactly transpired Monday night.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said a lieutenant and two police officers assigned to the Arlington Gardens public housing complex at Randolph Avenue near McDougall Street were on patrol when the incident unfolded around 10:15 p.m., Suarez said.
The preliminary investigation suggests fireworks were being shot in the area of the incident when police opened fire, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, she said.
The two men who were shot ages 19 and 21 were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, Suarez added.
No charges have been filed at this time.
They opened fire on a city street? Did they hit it?
Looks like the cops came across some young people setting off fireworks, and started blasting away.
What is ironic was that a citizen nearby heard the fireworks, and wasn’t worried until he heard the cops start blasting away.
Unlike the cops, the citizen knew the difference.
Unlike the cops, the citizen knew the difference.
And remind me again, which of the two can carry guns across all state lines?
The People ain’t gonna be happy with the mayor
