Award-winning journalist, TV host, and author Skip Bayless reacts to the news that former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, who coached the team from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2005 to 2011, will advise the Lakers in their search for a new head coach after Frank Vogel was fired: “It feels like Jeanie Buss just fired LeBron [James] as the unofficial GM of the Lakers. It feels like she’s angry about the Westbrook debacle and is bringing back Phil Jackson into the fold.”

For every Chicago Bulls home game during Michael Jordan's career, first at Chicago Stadium and then at the United Center, he was welcomed onto the court with the same introduction song: “Sirius” by the Alan Parsons Project. Parsons had released the instrumental track in 1982, using it as the opening song for his Eye in the Sky album. Two years later, a Chicago disc jockey named Tommy Edwards was settling in at a local movie theater when “Sirius” began playing over the cinema’s speaker system. “I know this song,” the longtime radio personality recalled to NBC Sports. “It’s ‘Sirius’ by...

Derek Fisher has agreed to become the head coach of the New York Knicks and is currently finalizing a five-year, $25 million contract, according to reports. The development was first reported by Frank Isola of the New York Daily News and the terms of Fisher’s deal were later revaled by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Fisher, 39, played 17.6 minutes per game off the bench for the Thunder this season. He was a regular contributor throughout Oklahoma City’s run to the Western Conference finals and all the while a prominent figure in the Knicks coaching search.
  • Phil Jackson's wrongheaded view of Arizona's anti-immigrant law (Farce Alert!)

I saw my first Lakers game as a boy, when my late father took me to watch the team play the Cincinnati Royals at the old Sports Arena. I was hooked for life, and though I have an indefensibly immoderate fondness for nearly all sports, the Lakers remain, for me, a team apart. At least they were. I can't bring myself to root against the Lakers in their current playoff series with the Phoenix Suns, but neither can I support them — unless the club formally repudiates Coach Phil Jackson's endorsement of Arizona's mean-spirited new anti-immigrant law.

A small but spirited group of activists, outraged at comments by Lakers coach Phil Jackson that seemed to back Arizona's controversial new immigration law, rallied Monday outside Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles before the playoff opener against the Phoenix Suns. "The way we look at it, Phil Jackson is supporting the Arizona law," said Mario Gonzalez, a longtime Lakers fan and rally organizer. "That's surprising. It caught us off guard. We want to find out where the team stands on the law."

Activists outraged at comments made by Lakers Coach Phil Jackson that seem to back Arizona’s controversial new immigration law plan to rally outside Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles before Monday’s playoff opener against the Phoenix Suns. “The way we look at it, Phil Jackson is supporting the Arizona law,” said Mario Gonzalez, a longtime Lakers fan and rally organizer. “That’s surprising. It caught us off guard. We want to find out where the team stands on the law.” John Black, the Lakers' vice president for public relations, did not respond to telephone messages seeking comment. Sparking the furor are...

LA Lakers coach Phil Jackson has become the focus of ire from the illegal immigrant activists and those who can't read. They're planning a protest against Jackson at tonight's Lakers-Suns playoff game in Los Angeles: Immigration activists plan to picket the NBA Western Division title game at Staples Center Monday evening, because Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he has no problem with Arizona’s controversial new illegal immigration law. ...When Adande told Jackson that some feel the Arizona Legislature had usurped federal law, Jackson countered Arizona is “not usurping, it’s just copying it is what they said they did, and then...

Phil Jackson is stepping down as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson, one of the most successful coaches in NBA history, won't return to lead the Lakers next season. Jackson, who won three straight championships with the team, agreed with Lakers owner Jerry Buss to end his tenure as coach, the team said in a statement. "In my opinion Phil is the best coach in the history of the NBA and he did a phenomenal job for us these past five years, for which I am very grateful," Buss stated in a release from the team. "Not only did...

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- It's the NBA Finals, and that means Phil Jackson digs into his personal jewelry box for a championship ring to inspire his players. Jackson sported the 2001 ring won by the Los Angeles Lakers on his right pinkie Thursday. A bit gaudy perhaps, but the 58-year-old coach with nine titles to his credit is following a personal tradition. "The stuff has just snowballed. I can't stop to absorb it all," he said of the staggering success he's experienced as an NBA coach. Jackson has been called lucky to have coached the likes of Michael Jordan and...
