At least 12 people were shot in Philadelphia over the weekend — including one fatally outside a strip club and three injured near a playground and skate park just hours after a movie-night event that draws families. ---SNIP--- Tracey Gordon, a Southwest Philadelphia native who won the Democratic primary for Philadelphia’s register of wills, lamented the shootings on Facebook and Twitter, which, she said, happened on movie night at the playground. “When families are not safe at their local playground it’s beyond bad it’s a state of emergency!,” Gordon wrote

As the former chief executive and elected Sheriff in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I always demanded professional conduct from my officers. It is crucial for the public to have trust and confidence in their law enforcement agencies. I stressed excellence—not perfection. It is important to realize that we are dealing with human beings and thus, the imperfection of the human condition. Like in any aspect of life, people are always going to fall short of what we expect. Your kids, even your spouse, will let you down at times. When in a position of trust like policing, a higher standard is warranted—so...

Let’s go,” Bedoya said. Bedoya’s message comes as the United States is left reeling after the latest rash of mass shootings. Twenty people were killed and dozens were injured during a mass shooting at a shopping mall in El Paso on Saturday. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty...

The Philadelphia Phillies are doing more than just competing for a place in this year's baseball playoffs. On Friday, the club filed suit in New York federal court over an attempt to grab ownership to the "Phanatic," the team's mascot. According to the complaint, Bill Giles, Phillies' executive vp, created the vision for the mascot in the 1970s — a green, fat, furry, big-nosed character accessible to children. The team says it worked with a company called Harrison/Erickson to develop the costume for the Phanatic. The firm was paid $215,000, according to the complaint. Dave Raymond, an intern in the...

...Fulton is appealing from a Third Circuit Court of Appeals opinion holding that Philadelphia did not violate the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment when it took punitive actions against Catholic Social Services because, in the words of the cert petition, “as a Catholic agency, CSS cannot provide written endorsements for same-sex couples which contradict its religious teachings on marriage.” Philadelphia took this action in spite of the fact that “CSS’s beliefs about marriage haven’t prevented anyone from fostering. ” As Becket explains: Philadelphia has a diverse array of foster agencies, and not a single same-sex couple approached CSS...

A few days before President Trump’s Twitter rant against four congresswomen of color, a few thousand progressives gathered in Philadelphia to hear speakers exhort them to make race a central issue in the 2020 election. “We’ve got to center racial justice,” Rashad Robinson, the executive director of Color of Change, told the Netroots Nation conference. Robinson told the audience that “racial justice is a strategy for gaining power and winning power.” Robinson represents a left wing of the party that wants to confront Trump’s demagoguery on race and identity head on, not shying away from the topic. “Democrats for years...

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, echoing President Trump’s weekend tweets aimed at four Democratic congresswomen, said Tuesday that the president would “have to go to hell” if he ever went back where he came from. Kenney made the comment while speaking at an event to help illegal immigrants facing deportation, according to KYW-TV. Kenney reportedly veered off script, saying he had a vision that one day Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and former Acting ICE Director Tom Homan will be standing “outside of heaven” in a “cyclone-fenced dungeon” for eternity because “what they’re doing now is so anti-human, antithetical, anti-American, anti-decent,...

What would YOU do if someone ever hurt or tried to take away your kids? We know what THIS dad did. Most everyone at some point has said some version of the claim — if anyone ever laid a finger on (_____) they would wish they had never been born. Fortunately, most of us never have to find out how seriously we do (or do not) really mean those words. But every so often, bad things happen and bad people come along to hurt our loved ones. In this case, the loved ones were rescued, and the bad guy was...
