Philadelphia transit strike ended Monday as the Transport Workers Union and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority reached a contract agreement. SEPTA and TWU Local 234 announced a tentative five year contract, ending the strike and phasing back in workers. Full service is expected to be restored on Tuesday morning. SEPTA Board Chairman Pasquale Deon said the contract is a fair deal that provides "wage increases, pension improvements, and maintains health care coverage levels while addressing rising costs." The deal is still subject to ratification by union members and must be approved by the SEPTA board.

In a blow to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a U.S. judge on Thursday upheld a Pennsylvania state law that could make it difficult for his supporters to monitor Election Day activity in Democratic-leaning areas. Trump has repeatedly said that the Nov. 8 presidential election may be rigged, and has urged supporters to keep an eye out for signs of voting fraud in Philadelphia and other heavily Democratic areas. Democrats worry that could encourage Trump supporters to harass Hispanics, African-Americans and other minority voters in a state that could determine whether Trump or his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, wins the...

On Tuesday, 171 women across the United States and its territories are up for seats in the U.S. Congress. Of that group, 46 are running as Republicans. Just four are African-American. And one of those candidates is a Philadelphian. Deborah Williams, 47, a divorced mother of two, is a one-woman show, sans the political entourage, taking on the monolithic U.S. Rep Bob Brady, the nine-time representative of the 1st Congressional District and chairman of the Philadelphia Democratic Party. She’s aware of the reality.

Despite last minute negotiations and a visit from Democratic heavy-hitter Congressman Bob Brady, 4,738 SEPTA workers walked off the job Monday night, beginning a strike that halted subways, trolleys and buses in Philadelphia. "We are not able to come to an agreement with SEPTA so as of 12:01 a.m. we're on strike," said Willie Brown, president of Transportation Workers Union Local 234, which represents almost 5,000 SEPTA workers who are hitting the picket lines Tuesday morning.

Philadelphia transit employees will meet with city officials to negotiate a new contract as the Nov. 1 strike deadline looms, and the prospects of a full walk-out become a very real possibility. The contract between workers and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority (SEPTA) expires at midnight Oct. 31 (Halloween). The two sides have been in talks for months in order to work out the details of a deal. A major strike could effect voters on Election Day if the walkout runs past Nov. 8.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia TV station has found at least three instances in which votes were cast in recent elections under the names of people who were long dead. WPVI-TV (http://6abc.cm/2fcXVS7 ) dug through a decade's worth of Philadelphia's election and death records. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has warned of fraud at Philadelphia polls. He's specifically raised concerns about votes made by dead people. Among the three individuals was a woman who died in 2006 but cast ballots in 2008, 2012, 2014 and the 2016 primary election. Republican City Commissioner Al Schmidt says human error, like poll workers...

When the Affordable Care Act open enrollment period begins next week, customers will see some changes, including fewer choices and higher prices. In Pennsylvania, the number of insurers in the marketplace has gone from 13 to eight. In Philadelphia, just two insurers are left and premiums are expected to rise 53 percent.Aviva Aron-Dine of Health and Human Services says the size of the hike reflects artificially low rates early on. ---SNIP--- On Jan. 30, the AG's Office said, the mailman had parked his mail truck on Harding Avenue in Morton to deliver mail to homes in the area. That's when the driver of a Nissan vehicle pulled up and stopped directly in front of the mail truck. As the mailman got out of his vehicle, the Nissan driver complained that the mailman was blocking the road and yelled, "This is my hood," authorities said. Later, as the mailman tried to walk by, one of the occupants in the Nissan slapped a piece of mail from the carrier's hand, the AG's...

Warning darkly of a stolen election, Donald J. Trump has called on supporters to turn out in droves on Election Day to monitor polling places, telling them they need to be vigilant against widespread voter fraud and a rigged outcome. “Voter fraud is all too common, and then they criticize us for saying that,” he said at a rally Tuesday in Colorado Springs. “But take a look at Philadelphia, what’s been going on, take a look at Chicago, take a look at St. Louis. Take a look at some of these cities, where you see things happening that are horrendous.”...

Donald Trump’s “election protection” effort will be run by Mike Roman, a Republican operative best known for promoting a video of apparent voter intimidation by the New Black Panthers outside a polling place in 2008. Roman is to oversee poll-watching efforts as Trump undertakes an unprecedented effort by a major party nominee by calling into question the legitimacy of the popular vote weeks before election day. The Republican nominee has insisted, without evidence, that dead people and undocumented immigrants are voting in the United States. Trump has long claimed that the 2016 election is rigged but has amplified his claims...

Abdul Fattah, a Muslim man from Philadelphia, isn't offended by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's promise of a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States if he is elected. In fact, Fattah said, he actually is "grateful" for the proposed policy. "A lot of Americans have the misconception that Donald Trump is racist toward Muslims," said Fattah, 39, who attended a rally on Independence Mall Sunday as part of a small group under the banner Muslims for Trump. "That's not what [the policy] is about whatsoever. It's about the extreme vetting of Muslims coming into this country, and I...

At least 86 non-citizens have been registered voters in Philadelphia since 2013, and almost half — 40 — even voted in at least one recent election, according to a legal group that sued to get voter registration records. Joseph Vanderhulst, an attorney with the Public Interest Legal Foundation, noted Philadelphia knows about those 86 illegal voters only because officials received specific requests — in almost every case from the voters themselves — to remove the names from the rolls. He said there is no way to know how many non-citizens might be registered to vote in Philadelphia, let alone in...

Pennsylvania is important to the election — and getting a big turnout in Philadelphia is vital to the Clinton campaign’s chances at victory. Tim Kaine debates Mike Pence tonight in the campaign’s lone vice presidential debate. Even though it won’t reach viewership levels of the first presidential debate, this will be the night where Kaine and Pence receive the most attention they’ll get during the campaign. On Wednesday, Kaine will come to Philadelphia to campaign. He joins a long list of Hillary Clinton surrogates who have stumped for the Democratic presidential candidate in Philadelphia. President Obama was at Eakins Oval...
