A loyal dog stayed by her pal's side for a WEEK after she got trapped in a ravine. Bassett hound Phoebe and setter mix Tillie went missing from their home in Washington State, US, on September 8. Appeals by the worried owners were unsuccessful until residents near some woodland saw a reddish dog approach them and then head off down to ravine to sit by the side of its fellow canine which was trapped on an old concrete cistern.
  • Dog stands guard, seeks help for nearly a week after canine friend gets trapped in cistern

When it comes to loyalty, there are no bounds between Tillie and Phoebe. The pair of canines was recently reunited with their heartsick owner after one of them tumbled into an uncovered cistern and became trapped for nearly a week. But instead of abandoning her best friend, Tillie, a setter, is being credited with lovingly staying by Phoebe's side. The exception was "the few minutes of each day when she went for help," according to a local rescue group Vashon Island Pet Protectors which participated in their recovery. The animal group says it was a neighbor's report of a "reddish"...

Visibly straining as he holds it aloft, a Japanese fisherman grimaces as he proudly displays a terrifyingly large fish caught in the waters off Japan. With a gaping mouth large enough to swallow a small child, this creature - believed to be a wolffish - would not look out of place in a science fiction film. The massive catch was reeled in by Hirasaka Hiroshi, a fisherman who has made a career of landing and then eating unusual fish. Normally growing to about 1.2m in length, the wolffish Hirasaka caught measured close to two metres
  • Have humans made dogs STUPID? Pets are 'lazy thinkers' compared to wild wolves

They may be man's best friend, but dogs have little to thank humans for it seems. Research suggests the domesticated pets can't solve problems as well as their wild cousins because living with us has made them 'incapable of thinking for themselves.' In tests, experts presented a 'puzzle box' containing food to a group of dogs, and a group of wolves and while the wolves were capable of breaking inside, the dogs looked to humans for help.
  • Air Canada Pilot Diverts International Flight to Save Dog

A French bulldog named Simba is probably alive today because of the attentiveness of an Air Canada pilot. Simba was flying via Air Canada Flight 85 from Tel Aviv to Toronto when the pilot noticed a problem with the cargo area’s heating system, according to CNN Canadian affiliate City News. Simba’s owner, German Kontorovich, was in the cabin. “As soon as the crew became aware of the temperature issue, the captain grew rightfully concerned for the dog’s comfort and well-being,” Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told CNN via email. “With the altitude it can become very uncomfortable, and possibly the...

A Metairie man with "WHO DAT" tattooed across his forehead was sentenced to six months in jail this week after he spat at a New Orleans judge during his arraignment tied to a charge of grabbing a deputy's groin. Michael Edwards, 29, of 2818 Tugie Drive, who already faces a municipal charge tied to spitting on a deputy, missed Criminal District Court Judge Robin Pittman when he spat her on Wednesday. But his spit was found on the wood trim at her bench, court records show. For that, she held him in contempt and sentenced him to the maximum punishment...

A team of researchers with member affiliations to several institutions in the U.S. and Japan has developed a new device that allowed them to alter the spines on a neural dendrite in a mouse brain that was first modified naturally by an event that caused a memory to form. As they explain in their paper published in the journal Nature, altering the spine caused a learned memory to be forgotten. Ju Lu and Yi Zuo both with the University of California, offer a News & Views piece on the work done by the team and offer suggestions on where such...

  • Wild Panda Makes Sweet Score Raiding Honey Farmer’s Hives

    09/11/2015 2:11:45 PM PDT · by nickcarraway · 17 replies
A bee farmer in Southwest China's Sichuan Province found himself helpless as a wild panda helped itself to honey straight from his hives, media reported on Wednesday. The Baoxing county villager called local authorities Tuesday after he discovered the sweet-toothed panda dipping into 10 box beehives. Authorities arrived to find the panda crouching in the corner, completely absorbed with his desert and undeterred by their presence. "This panda didn't fear people standing a meter away," said Jiang Xiandong, a local official. Concerned about how to handle China's most protected and treasured animal, the nonplussed officials eventually left the panda to...

There is definitely a huge size difference here. Navarro is around 80 lbs and Iben is just over 1 lb, so I was a little worried about them learning to play. As it turns out, even when Iben's head completely disappears inside Navarro's mouth, he is completely safe. And thank goodness for that! It seems to be a good friendship in the making.

A 2-year-old boy suffering from malnutrition was being nursed by a neighbor’s dog in Chile, police said. The toddler was rescued by officers who took him to a hospital in the desert port of Arica, about 1,000 miles north of Santiago. The child was also suffering from lice and a skin infection and police said the boy’s parents were “dead drunk". The mother arrived at the hospital inebriated, but the parents were not charged because the boy had not been physically abused, according to an official. The US dentist whose killing of Cecil the lion fuelled a global backlash has emerged for an interview and says he will return to work on Tuesday. Walter Palmer has disputed some accounts of the hunt, expressed agitation at the animosity directed at those close to him and says he will be back at work within days. Palmer, who has spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests and threats, intends to return to his suburban Minneapolis dental practice on Tuesday. In an interview on Sunday conducted jointly by The Associated Press and the...

One Russian town is living your worst nightmare: a bear apocalypse. Luchegorsk, a town of 21,000 near the Chinese border, is being terrorized by hungry bears following a shortage of wild nuts and berries, a.k.a. foods bears usually eat to fatten up for the winter. The Guardian reports that one brown bear and one Himalayan bear are "ruling" Luchegorsk, walking through the streets and attacking residents. Asian black bears have also been spotted, and another 30-ish bears are circling the town's borders. Local police are using sirens, cars, and pressure hoses and firing into the air to scare the bears...

In Bayou L’Ours, east of the south Lafourche levee system, long narrow strips of marsh stretch across an area that was once a pocket of open water. The new land is the result of a marsh terracing project planned since 2012 in conjunction with nonprofit Ducks Unlimited, Lafourche Parish government and landowner ConocoPhillips. The project, now in the second of five phases, is designed to restore eroded marsh of Bayou L’Ours, protect the levee system and create a productive habitat for fisheries and waterfowl, said Lafourche Parish Administrator Archie Chaisson. Chaisson described the terraces as mini-levees. Four marsh buggies work...
