CANTON, Ohio - A Canton Police K-9 and a suspect were shot and injured early Saturday morning while responding to an active burglary call, police said. According to police, officers, along with 3-year-old K-9 Jethro, responded to the burglary call just after 1 a.m. at the Fisher Foods, on 1272 Harrison Ave. SW, when the suspect confronted Jethro inside the store.

Officers were called to the 700 block of East 69th Place about 10:30 p.m., police said. When they arrived, they found three “vicious” dogs that were “advancing towards citizens then at the officers,” The officers opened fire, killing one of the dogs and injuring another, Greer said. The injured dog ran off with the third, which was unharmed.

A sick, stray dog recently picked up in Clayton County, Georgia, was discovered to be a retired police dog. According to a Fundrazr.com post by Partners for Pets, the dog’s original handler became sick several years ago and the canine had to be re-homed.
