"There are left-wing zealots with at least a modicum of ability to stop themselves from publically going off the really deep end, and then there’s former MSNBC hack Keith Olbermann who fails to realize — or give a damn about —how his ridiculous anger and bitterness is perceived by a majority of rational Americans."

The school police chief faulted for having officers stay back during a gunman's deadly siege at a campus in Uvalde, Texas, last week is free to take his elected seat on the City Council, the mayor said Monday. Peter Arredondo, the chief of police for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, was said to be the incident commander who ordered officers to remain outside during the more-than-hourlong siege at Robb Elementary School last week. Despite the ultimate presence of city, state and federal law enforcement officers who presumably could have pulled rank and assumed command, Texas Department of Public Safety...

Time to move on. Too juvenile and too much name-calling. Not near the level of critical thinking that used to go on back in the day. I wish the best to all the good ones left out there.

It had all the trappings of a down-home country fair somewhere well below the Mason-Dixon line: Lynyrd Skynyrd medleys, mile-long lines for fried chicken, barbecue and draft beer, and a plethora of Confederate flags emblazoning everything from belt buckles to motorcycle vests to trucker caps. But Sunday's party marking the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War took about 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) south of the South, in a rural Brazilian town colonized by families fleeing Reconstruction. Thousands turn out every year, including many who trace their ancestry back to the dozens of families who, enticed by...

Pedro Espada Jr. indicted for embezzlementBy CHUCK BENNETT Last Updated: 5:49 PM, December 14, 2010 Pedro Espada Jr, the scandal-scarred outgoing state Senate majority leader, was indicted today in Brooklyn federal court for allegedly looting his Bronx health clinic and using the money for lavish meals, Broadway tickets — and a downpayment on a Bentley. The long-expected indictments came months after Espada – who stalled state government last year when he bolted from the Democratic to Republican party then back again – lost his primary re-election campaign. Espada and his son, Pedro Gautier Espada, are due in court...

A scientist and his wife who used to work at a high-level U.S. energy laboratory were arrested Friday after an FBI sting operation and indicted on charges of conspiring to help develop a nuclear weapon for Venezuela. After their arrest, the two appeared in federal court in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They dealt with an FBI undercover agent posing as a Venezuelan agent. The government did not allege that Venezuela or anyone working for it sought U.S. secrets.

PRESTON, Idaho — Talk to a Preston resident for any length of time and you're likely to hear the town's new mantra: "There's a little bit of Napoleon in all of us," says lifelong resident Thedora Petterborg. "Who hasn't felt like that once in a while?" It's been several months since Napoleon Dynamite became America's favorite nerd. The movie, written and directed by freshman filmmaker Jared Hess and based in Preston, was a surprise success, grossing $44.5 million in the United States and gaining near cult status with December's release on...

WSMV-TV, Nashville, Tennessee, E-mail: lbrinton@wsmv.com January 24, 2005 The cream always come to the top. Now let's think back a bit, about two years ago. Ann Zimmerman was a widely-praised Metro School teacher with a lot of experience. Along came Metro Schools Director Pedro Garcia, who required students to be taught from a remedial reading program called "Language!" Zimmerman believed the program was a step-back for her students and that "Language!" contained too many errors and too much jargon. She put her foot down and said no way was she going to use the controversial program for her students. Zimmerman...

Two days before Pedro Martinez [stats, news] was expected to officially become a New York Met, unconfirmed rumors and erroneous reports about the health of his shoulder dominated the airwaves and Internet chatrooms yesterday. One false rumor maintained Martinez would not undergo an MRI of his right shoulder and arm, which is standard procedure for any major league pitcher undergoing a physical before signing a new contract. Martinez is scheduled to receive one today under the supervision of Mets team doctor David Altchek in New York. The MRI exam will be the first performed on Martinez' shoulder since he hurt...

Sympathy comes in short supply in the baseball business. For the fans, it's a game, but for the people who actually put on the uniform, the endeavor to beat the opponent is an earnest one with a black-and-white bottom line: If you won, you really don't care why the other guys lost. Bad luck, injury, off-the-field calamity. That's not our problem, it's yours.
