The purveyors of solar energy are working overtime to spin the now official failure of the Crescent Dunes thermal solar plant in central Nevada. The contracts to purchase the electricity from the constantly broken plant will be voided. Bloomberg Businessweek claims that Crescent Dunes was obsoleted by technological advances in the form of photovoltaic based solar plants. That is nonsense and misses the whole point of the Crescent Dunes project. CARSON CITY — The rooftop-solar company SolarCity said Wednesday it has been forced to eliminate more than 550 jobs in Nevada because of the new net metering rate approved by the state Public Utilities Commission on Dec. 22. The Warren Buffett-owned utility NV Energy has a plan that could pad the pockets of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders at the expense of Nevada residents by gaming the regulatory system meant to keep utilities in check, according to critics of the plan. Nevada Power has amended its general rate increase request in a filing Friday with the state Public Utilities Commission, raising the revenue requirement to $37.8 million from the $20.8 million sought originally May 2. The effect of the new request, which totals about 81 percent, would be to impose an overall increase of 1.64 percent instead of the 0.9 percent request in the original filing.
