While at best, Clinton’s clean cookstove campaign seems slimy, and may be illegal, one might cast a blind eye if the program achieved its aggrandizing goals. Hillary Clinton’s “trustworthiness” problem is fed by a long history of “varying credibility,” as a recent Politico story delineated, including cattle-futures trading, law firm billing records, muddled sniper fire recollections and e-mail use. While providing pertinent points, the Politico list is just a sampling. One missing item on the “mistrust” litany is a project she reportedly cooked up as Secretary of State, but that was shaped by her family foundation. State Department staff sent...

Norway’s migration and integration minister has faced calls to resign after telling the country’s Muslim immigrants they must adapt to a society in which “we eat pork, drink alcohol and show our face.” Sylvi Listhaug, a member of the country’s populist, anti-immigrant Progress Party, made the comments in a Facebook post Monday. “I think those who come to Norway need to adapt to our society,” she wrote. “Here we eat pork, drink alcohol and show our face. You must abide by the values, laws and regulations that are in Norway when you come here.” Listhuag was appointed to the role...

Norway may soon host a rotational force of US Marines -- a move that could send a chill down Russian President Vladimir Putin's spine. The American request, confirmed in a statement from the commanding officer of Marine forces in Europe, comes as tensions between the US and Russia are increasing amid the humanitarian disaster in Syria and US assertions of Russian involvement in cyber hacks on American political organizations and individuals.

Norwegian Justice Minister Anders Anundsen said on Thursday that the EU must allow Norway to continue with its temporary border controls for as long as the nation deems them necessary. When the ministers of justice of the EU and the four EFTA countries meet in Luxembourg on Thursday, Anundsen will ask for the green light to keep Norway’s controls in place. “I think it’s important that we have the opportunity to continue with internal border controls as long as we believe it is necessary,” Anundsen said. Norway is one of five Schengen countries that have introduced border controls in the...

Britain wanted to create a formal task force to work with Norway on a post-Brexit free trade agreement, but the Norwegian rejected the overture according to a new report. Business daily Dagens Næringsliv reported that the UK’s international trade secretary, Liam Fox, lobbied his Norwegian counterpart, Minister of Trade and Industry Monica Mæland, for Norway to join the United Kingdom in establishing a task force to prepare a new trade agreement for when the Brits formally leave the EU. But when Fox’s request was relayed to the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, it was rejected. According to Dagens Næringsliv, the ministry’s director...

The Norwegian government will not go along with a protocol that allows children to lodge complaints over violations of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and three other UN conventions. The government’s decision goes against the advice of numerous Norwegian human rights groups and the demands of its partners in the Liberal Party (Venstre). …

Rock legend Bruce Springsteen has described Donald Trump as an embarrassment to the United States, saying the Republican presidential candidate is a demagogue with simple solutions. Springsteen, who has dramatized the plight of working-class Americans in his music, said he understands how Trump could seem “compelling” to people who are economically insecure. “The absurdity is beyond cartoon-like. But he's gotten close enough (to the White House) so it can make you nervous,” he told Skavlan, a talk show in Norway and Sweden, during an interview released Friday. […] “We have certain problems in the United States — tremendous inequality of...

Some nights, sitting at a table in a hotel restaurant 17 stories above the Bodø quay, you may see what looks like a spark rise from the Norwegian coast and fly off into the night. Another follows, then both wink out in the distance. They are F-16s from the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) stationed here in Bodø [pronounced “BO-deh”], either on a training flight or scrambled to intercept an aerial visitor, probably a Russian one, skirting Norwegian airspace. Though the conversation around the restaurant is mostly in Norwegian, you also hear diners chatting in English, a good deal of...

A new report from the Norwegian Police Security Service (Politiets Sikkerhetstjeneste — PST) has found that nearly every fifth radicalized Muslim is a convert to the religion. The PST study attempted to investigate the backgrounds of people in extreme Islamist groups. Everyone in the representative sample study by the security service had been radicalized in Norway and all were under the age of 40. A full 88 percent of the radicalized individuals have an ethnic background other than Norwegian and over 30 different nationalities are represented amongst the radicalized individuals. Some 76 percent of the extremists have Norwegian citizenship. The...

They sweat together, they sleep together: in the name of gender equality, Norway has introduced compulsory military service for women, even bunking them in mixed dorms with their brothers-in-arms. The military's gender balance is not entirely equal yet, but almost a third of the Norwegian army conscripts born in 1997 were women this summer. At the Setermoen army base just above the Arctic Circle, new recruits in an armoured battalion are learning to handle assault rifles for use on combat missions. Here and there, long ponytails stick out behind the recruits' caps. "It gives me a bigger recruitment pool to...

Norway is accepting far fewer Iraqi and Afghan asylum seekers than other countries in Europe, a new report from Klassekampen shows. The newspaper looked at 2016 statistics from the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) and found major differences in asylum approval rates. While EASO showed that an average of 60 percent of Iraqis and 47 percent of Afghans who sought asylum between January and July were approved, those numbers are at just ten percent and 25 percent respectively in Norway. UDI said in June that asylum numbers had plummeted by 95 percent in...

A hairdresser went on trial in Norway on Thursday for refusing a Muslim client wearing a hijab, in the first case in the country to go to court over the Islamic head covering. Merete Hodne risks up to six months in prison for religious discrimination for turning Malika Bayan away from her hair salon in Bryne, a small town in southwestern Norway, in October last year. […] The 47-year-old hairdresser told the court she saw the hijab as a political symbol representing an ideology that frightens her, rather than as a religious symbol. “I see it as a totalitarian symbol....

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Norway's state church has seen a record fall in membership after making it possible to join and leave the church electronically. The Church of Norway says almost 25,000 members left in August by using a new function on the church's website. Meanwhile, about 1,200 new members joined online. Even though the church has seen a steady decline in membership in recent decades, that's by far the biggest monthly loss in recorded history. By comparison, the church lost 8,588 members in the first seven months of 2016, before the online option was introduced. Still, church officials appear to...

The man, who is registered as living in Vest-Agder county, is accused of having raped three different women whom he met in the capital. “There is nothing that points to these being attack rapes, but rather as I understand it attacks on women that he met in the city,” the man’s defense lawyer, Arne Gunnar Aas told Nettavisen. …

For the first time since the mid 1990s, Norway’s expenditures have exceeded state revenues. Figures released by Statistics Norway (SSB) on Tuesday show that the state’s total revenues in the second quarter of this year totaled 328 billion kroner, which is 2.3 percent less than in the same quarter of last year. […] “Reduced income from petroleum taxes and reduced surplus from the State’s Direct Financial Interest in petroleum activities (SDFI) account largely for the continued decrease in total revenue in Q2 2016,” SSB wrote. …

Earlier this year, Carlsen admitted in an interview with Norwegian TV-channel TV2 that he was "a huge fan" of US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, something seldom uttered in Norway, where the mainstream media are strictly pro-Clinton and where Donald Trump is a standing subject of ridicule. Last week-end, however, the controversy flared up anew, as Carlsen's supposed sympathies with Trump were addressed again in his interview with Spain's second largest newspaper El Mundo. Carlsen expressed displeasure with how his words had been "twisted and turned," while at the same time snubbing Norwegian political correctness. "A few months ago I...
