  • The costly reality of owning an electric car: How customers are being slugged $33,000 to repair

A Nissan Leaf owner has received a $33,000 bill to replace the battery in his electric car - even though it's now only worth $12,000.Canberra engineer Phillip Carlson bought his fully-electric hatchback brand new for $53,500 in August 2012. Just seven years later, he can't drive his environmentally-friendly car because he isn't prepared to stump up $33,385 to replace the lithium ion battery. The tab included $750 for labour and $29,600 for the battery plus the 10 per cent GST. Mr Carlson, a married father with a daughter, believed his new car had a range of 175km but even as a...
  • Nissan LEAF Batteries To Outlast Car By 10-12 Years

Some would argue otherwise, but this is fantastic news. Recent Nissan battery life data suggests that the battery itself may last some 10-12 years beyond the life of the car. The company sees the LEAF's reasonable life at about 10 years. Managing director of Renault-Nissan Energy Services Francisco Carranza reveals that the batteries in those cars seem to have a 22-year life span.

  • AAA: Cold weather can cut electric car range over 40 percent

Cold temperatures can sap electric car batteries, temporarily reducing their range by more than 40 percent when interior heaters are used, a new study found. The study of five electric vehicles by AAA also found that high temperatures can cut into battery range, but not nearly as much as the cold. The range returns to normal in more comfortable temperatures. […] AAA tested the BMW i3s, Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf from the 2018 model year, and the 2017 Tesla Model S 75D and Volkswagen e-Golf. All have a range of at least 100 miles per charge. They were tested...
  • Tesla, Nissan Take Financial Hits as States Remove EV Subsidies

It’s been six years sinceelectric vehiclemanufacturers enjoyed their windfall from U.S. taxpayers via the stimulus, but the thirst for subsidies, and pain from financial losses, have not waned. The pursuit of government goodiescontinues apace forTesla Motors, even more vigorously after the Los Angeles Timesreported last month that CEO Elon Musk depends on more than $4.9 billion in corporate welfare for his companies, which also include SolarCity and SpaceX. Tesla’s quest may more accurately be portrayed as preservation of the golden goose that is California’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) credit scheme. The Golden State requires the six largest auto manufacturers to...
  • Nissan LEAF Drivers Drive More Miles Than Gasmobile Drivers In Europe

In Europe, at least, drivers of the 100%-electric Nissan LEAF actually drive about 50% more than average drivers of petrol- and diesel-powered cars. This helps to bust the myth that electric cars are inadequate for the average driver, and that electric car drivers don’t drive very much. It also indicates that Nissan LEAF owners must be saving a lot more money than generally assumed. Electricity for powering a car is much cheaper than petrol or diesel. The average driver will save several thousand dollars (or euros, british pounds, etc.), but someone who actually drives much more than average is going...
  • VANITY: Anybody take the dive in getting a Nissan Leaf?

So the wife & I are thinking on taking the plunge. I commute about 75 miles a day round trip to work & back. Based on that, I pay over $410 in gas/month on a paid car that is just getting more expensive to maintain. Any other FReepers who are owners care to give your experiences? Is it worth it?

I did it. I got an electric car. A Nissan Leaf. Whatever the origins, the confluence of factors made it absurd not to. Buyers get a $7500 credit off federal taxes. Georgia offers $5000 off purchase or lease. Power usage costs about $25/mo (vs gas at $150-300). That, plus negotiating, makes a 2 year lease net cost $0, if not negative. That I was driving a '98 POS facing major repairs, plus legislative movements reconsidering the incentives, made it a must-do. If you're in a state with similar incentives, and have any reason at all to get another car, do...
  • Nissan Admits Arrogance in Sales of Taxpayer-Subsidized Leaf

A top Nissan official has said the company was “arrogant” in its marketing and sales approach for the all-electric Leaf, which received a $1.4 billion stimulus loan guarantee fromPresident Obama’s Department of Energy. Not that the company is going to return taxpayers their money, since the premise upon which Nissan received the loan were ridiculously high production estimates. Too much in expenses would have to be eaten otherwise. “We were a little bit arrogant as a manufacturer when we went to the 50-state rollout,”said Al Castignetti, Nissan’s vice president for sales, to Automotive News in late November. “We had assumed...

Leased a 2012 NIssan Leaf actually. After the state rebate it was zero down and $171 total per month (for 39 months).I feel like a hypocrite taking the rebate but the money is already allocated. Why should liberals get all the money ? The car is comfortable and fun to drive. The range fits my commute. I'm really into technology. My question is this. I don't want people to think I'm an environmentalist wacko. What would be a good bumper sticker to make a statement without getting my car keyed by some lib?

Home / Nissan Leaf Range Loss Issues Persist In Arizona Published July 23, 2012 By Jeff Cobb 2012_nissan_leaf_06 Owners of the Nissan Leaf in Arizona have been chronicling complaints with Nissan whose representatives were initially said to be explaining away substantial range degradation, but now it appears Nissan is responding further to the heat. And perhaps that is appropriate as the heat of Arizona was what presumably created issues that have prompted a thread now 169 pages long on the MyNissanLEAF.com forum. As you can see in the video report, some owners have reported unacceptably significant degrees of range loss...

Last week's earnings report from General Motors revealed a troubling statistic for shareholders. GM's market share for North America shrunk from 18.3% a year ago to 16.7% for the latest quarter. Not coincidently, a survey by Yahoo Autos revealed that a full 13% of consumers would now "never" consider purchasing a GM vehicle while another 15% are less likely to purchase. A negative perception of the auto bailout process and the continued political overtones at GM are the reasons for the boycott. Another recent Rasmussen poll showed that 59% of Americans view the auto bailouts as a failure. The...

While General Motors’Chevy Volt assembly workers are sidelined for five weeks (and more this summer) because demand for its strongly hyped electric car is weak, the prospects for its chief rival – Nissan’s Leaf – are shaky at best. Nissan North America, Inc. – a subsidiary of its Japanese parent – is the beneficiary of a $1.4 billion Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturingloan from the U.S. Department of Energy, to convert a plant in Smyrna, Tenn. to produce the Leaf and batteries for it. The project’s promoters say the alterations will lead to 1,300 new jobs, enabling Nissan to produce...

Consumer Reports has painted an ugly picture of the Nissan Leaf, as did an early enthusiast based in Los Angeles, who described his frustrations with the heavily subsidized, all-electric car in a recent column. Now comes what must be the definitive example of the Leaf’s impracticality – this time from a (still) hard-core advocate, whose 180-mile Tennessee trek to visit family over the holidays required four lengthy stops to keep the vehicle moving. Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, set out from Knoxville on Monday with his wife and son, headed for the Nashville...

Last week NLPC reported about aConsumer Reports reviewer’s unpleasant experience driving the all-electric Nissan Leaf. Despite Liza Barth’s frequent range anxiety and endurance of freezing temperatures so as to avoid using the Leaf’s heater to preserve its power, she declined to give it a “thumbs down.” Instead, she seemed to chalk up the inconveniences (like “numb fingers and toes”) to her own inability to adapt to new technology, rather than calling the electric vehicle what it really is: a failure that is massively subsidized by taxpayers. Last month another Leaf customer wrote about his experience, and as opposed to...

While sales of the Chevy Volt languish, the maker of the all-electric and better-selling (but not great-selling) Nissan Leaf maintains that his company’s fortunes and that of his alternative vehicle have a promising future – with two big “ifs.” Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn told Reuters he expects 2012 sales to surpass this year, barring “economic 'armageddon'” and “ a 'Lehman-style' crisis.” According to Ghosn, “the highest level of uncertainty is Europe,” but he is confident “that 2012 will be another record year for the car industry no matter what Europe does." But anyone paying attention to the debt crisis...

On Friday NLPC reported that the Department of Energy may have made a bad bet on Ecotality, the car-charging company that is heavily dependent on $115 million in government grants to deploy stations for electric vehicles through its EV Project. It turns out that DOE may not only be gambling taxpayer funds on a shaky company, but may also have dumped a bunch of money into a technology with a questionable future. Last week seven automotive companies – General Motors, Ford, BMW, Audi, Daimler, Porsche, and Volkswagen – announced they would adopt a single standard , established by the...

Nissan Motor Co has received complaints from owners that its Leaf electric car on occasion fails to start, posing a potential setback for the automaker's goal of promoting zero-emission vehicles. Japan's No.2 automaker said on Monday it was looking into the exact cause, which it traced back to the Leaf's air-conditioning unit. Nissan is investigating whether the glitch was in a certain component or the programing, spokesman Toshitake Inoshita said.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf is now officially on sale, advertised as the first mass-market battery-operated car on the market. It uses no gasoline — and has no tailpipe emissions, because it has no tailpipe. And even though it's battery powered, like a golf cart, it's a real car, fun to drive, with comfortable seating for up to five people and styling that's mainstream, not quirky like some of the hybrids and earlier electric cars. For many, this even will be a practical car, one that can meet their everyday transportation needs — especially if they live, work and shop within a small...
