Barry Diller, the chairman of IAC/InterActiveCorp which recently acquired sole control of Newsweek, said that a plan to end its print edition is coming as soon as this fall. His comments came in IAC's quarterly earnings call and were first reported in a two-sentence story by Bloomberg News's Sarah Frier ("Newsweek, the 79-year-old magazine, will eventually transition to an online-only publication") and then in a tweet from her colleague Edmund Lee ("Barry Diller says by September-October, plan for digital only Newsweek will be announced"). The first actual quote from Diller came later in a post by Politico's Dylan Byers: "The...

Newsweek may cease its print publication by the end of this year, according to IAC chief Barry Diller, who as of this week owns the majority stake in the company. During a conference call with analysts this morning, Diller suggested that the magazine would eventually transition to an online-only publication, and that changes would begin to take place as early as this Fall. "The transition will happen,” Diller said. "The transition to online from hard print will take place. We’re examining all of our options." UPDATE: IAC spokesperson Justine Sacco emails to clarify: [Diller] was speaking about the weekly print...
  • Newsweek Seeks former Chick-Fil-A Employee "to spill the beans on life (at) antigay company"

Chick-Fil-A came under criticism this month after a report by the organization Equality Matters revealed that the company donated around $2 million to antigay Christian organizations in 2010. “Guilty as charged,” the fast-food chain’s president Dan Cathy said over allegations that his company is antigay (“We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit.”). So. Here we are. Tumblr, listen up. We’re hoping to find a current or former employee of Chick-Fil-A who might want to spill the beans on life inside the alleged antigay company. If that’s you, or you know someone who might...

A big publishing story of 2010 was when stereo equipment magnate Sidney Harman bought financially troubled Newsweek Magazine for $1 in the hopes of revitalizing the venerable old publication into the "thought leader" it once was. Now, since Mr. Harman's death, his family seems poised to bail on the old man's publishing charity case along with the left-leaning Daily Beast website. Since Sydney Harman bought Newsweek and took controlling interests in the Daily Beast, neither has become a profitable venture. This has caused the Harman family to re-think their position. [Snip] Things are changing, says the Harmans. "However, given the...

The magazine business isn't what it used to be. In the last ten years, Newsweek lost 2.5 million readers, and its newsstand sales are hardly worth mentioning. A full-page ad in it costs less than the price of a luxury car. Sold for a buck to the husband of an influential Congresswoman, merged with an internet site, it survives only by building issues around provocative essays and covers. If you want to understand why Newsweek put a badly photoshopped picture of Obama with a gay halo on its cover or features Romney doing a number from The Book of Mormon,...

Lawrence O'Donnell yesterday on The Last Word vehemently denounced Newsweek's "The First Gay President" cover because he thought it could mislead many people into believing that message. Ironically (and hilariously) "FIRST GAY PRESIDENT" in bold capital letters along with Obama's picture kept appearing on the MSNBC screen throughout O'Donnell's denunciation. His own screen graphics amusingly worked in contradiction to his arguments as if to mock O'Donnell.

The hard copy periodical industry is dying and about the only way they can boost sales is with incredibly controversial magazine covers. We saw a good example of this during the past week with Time featuring a mother breast feeding her son on the cover versus Newsweek declaring Obama, wearing a rainbow halo, as "The First Gay President." Have these magazines gone too far in their desperation for sales? This situation is analyzed in an incredibly humorous manner by the notorious Taiwanese animators who have developed quite a cult following with their funny take on the news. They have produced...

Last week Time magazine's cover brought the breastfeeding and attachment parenting debate into the national spotlight. This week it was Newsweek's turn to stir up controversy, with its cover on the First Gay President. Time magazine not only brought attention to the attachment parenting movement, it also inspired conversation on using provocative images and copy to revive the ailing print industry. Many critics are calling this issue a "stroke of genius" and "an example of print well done," including magazine expert Samir Husni. Newsweek came out with its controversial copy and image combo just a few days later, with similar...

Mitt and Ann Romney are exceptionally gracious people. Even though they are on the road they constantly have taken time to put pen to paper to write to Andrew Sullivan and Tina Brown expressing their gratitude for their efforts on behalf of the Romney campaign. Right Turn has come into possession of the letter. Well, actually we made it up, but this what they should be writing in recognition of the Newsweek cover that will go down as the single most helpful in-kind donation to the Romney camp this cycle. Dear Mr. Sullivan and Ms. Brown: Ann and I...

More from the Liberal “War on Women” front– Newsweek contributor Michelle Goldberg called Ann Romney “insufferable” on MSNBC this morning. Then she compared Mrs. Romney to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin On Mother’s Day, no less. [Video] “It can’t only be me that maybe initially saw Ann Romney as maybe a sympathetic or neutral figure but who is increasingly seeing her as someone who is kind of insufferable because of the way she’s milking this thing. (Mother’s Day) …You know, yes, motherhood is beautiful,” Goldberg continued. “I found that phrase ‘the crown of motherhood’ really kind of creepy, not just...

As NewsBusters reported Sunday, Newsweek/Daily Beast senior contributor Michelle Goldberg called Ann Romney "insufferable" on MSNBC this morning. Seconds later, she also compared the wife of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary). As Mark Finkelstein previously noted, Goldberg began her Romney attack on Up with Chris Hayes by saying, "It can't only be me that maybe initially saw Ann Romney as maybe a sympathetic or neutral figure but who is increasingly seeing her as someone who is kind of insufferable because of the way she's milking this thing."

Newsweek featured Barack Obama on the cover with a rainbow halo over his head with the title: "First Gay President." And now the DUmmies are angry because of the effect that cover will have on the election this year. I don't think Tina Brown was doing The One any favors when she chose that Newsweek cover. My thought is that the Newsweek folks and many other media liberals live in an insulated bubble which prevents them from seeing the damage that cover can do to the Bamster. However, many DUmmies are worried about this as well as ANGRY at...

Bill Clinton was the first black president. And now, according to Newsweek, we have the first gay president. Yes, all the speculation over what cover Tina Brown would choose for Newsweek is over. Despite several suggestions from The New Republic on this crucial subject, Brown refrained from taking their kindly advice and chose a picture of President Obama with a rainbow halo over his head.

The world awaits a momentous decision in a few days. According to the New Republic staff, Newsweek editor Tina Brown must decide what Newsweek cover to use to illustrate President Obama's announced support  for gay marriage. To aid Ms Brown in making her choice, the New Republic staffers provided a gallery of illustrations for the Newsweek cover including the Obama rainbow umbrella man at the top of this story. You can see several of the New Republic suggested illustrations below the fold. I must give them credit for extreme creativity although I am slightly disappointed that they didn't suggest a...

The current cover of a "news" magazine. I guess the left has now given up on eradicating Christianity in totality and now hope to subvert followers to their "reading" of the gospels. And note Foreheads article about SCOTUS betrayal. The Enquier has more integrity.

NewsWeek/DailyBeast – The Roberts Court’s rulings appear to be a concerted effort to send us back to the Gilded Age. If they dump the Affordable Care Act, writes David Dow, we should dump them. You think the idea is laughable? Thomas Jefferson disagreed with you. Jefferson believed Supreme Court justices who undermine the principles of the Constitution ought to be impeached, and that wasn’t just idle talk. During his presidency, Jefferson led the effort to oust Justice Salmon Chase, arguing that Chase was improperly seizing power. The Senate acquitted Chase in 1805, and no Justice has been impeached since, but...
