Yesterday on the network radio news they were reporting how many dollars cash on hand Apple Corporation had earned. They reported Apple could give every American $550 in cash were the cash to be distributed. In contrast, if the cash of Microsoft corporation was distributed, there would be only $150 per American (not sure of this number).

Canada’s leading surveillance agency is monitoring millions of Internet users’ file downloads in a dragnet search to identify extremists, according to top-secret documents. The covert operation, revealed Wednesday by CBC News in collaboration withThe Intercept, taps into Internet cables and analyzes records of up to 15 million downloads daily from popular websites commonly used to share videos, photographs, music, and other files. The revelations about the spying initiative, codenamed LEVITATION, are the first from the trove of files provided by National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden to show that the Canadian government has launched its own globe-spanning Internet mass surveillance system. According...

Yes, Clint Eastwood’s biopic of the late Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history with 160 confirmed kills over four tours of Iraq, has captured the fascination of the American public, earning a whopping $135 million-plus in less than two weeks of wide release, as well as 6 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Bradley Cooper’s committed portrayal of Kyle. It’s also proved divisive, with Hollywood stars like Seth Rogen and Michael Moore making colorful comments about the film (both have since apologized, claiming their statements were taken out of context), and critics being split on whether the...

SPRINGFIELD — A lawsuit filed by an Amherst College student who argued the school unfairly held up his academic career over an old, unproven allegation of an on-campus rape has quietly settled. According to records in U.S. District Court, the college recently reached a settlement with the "John Doe" but neither his lawyers nor school officials will discuss the terms of the agreement. Doe filed the lawsuit last year after the college decided to revive a 2009 allegation a week before he was set to earn his diploma in 2014 - and after the college had disciplined him for excessive...

In "American Sniper," the wildly successful yet controversial film thattells the story of Chris Kyle, said to be the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history, the titular marksman has a clear foe: A mysterious insurgent dubbed "Mustafa," believed to be a former Syrian Olympian. While the film portrays Mustafa as a mighty rival to Kyle, in the autobiographical book upon which the film is based, Mustafa earns just one paragraph.“From the reports we heard, Mustafa was an Olympics marksman who was using his skills against Americans and Iraqi police and soldiers," Kyle wrote. "Several videos had been made and posted, boasting of his...

Paul Nungesser was found “not responsible” for sexually assaulting another student at Columbia University. The student who accused him, Emma Sulkowicz, has since began carrying a mattress around the university as part of an art project to protest a finding she claims was unfair. Sulkowicz’s activism earned her an invitation to President Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. When Nungesser heard of the invitation, he blasted the senator for rewarding Sulkowicz’s attacks against him. “I am shocked to learn that Sen. Gillibrand is actively supporting Ms. Sulkowicz’s defamation campaign against me by providing...

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc said on Tuesday it has taken steps to clamp down on "hoaxes" and fake news stories that can spread like wildfire on its 1.35-billion member online social network. The company said it had introduced an option to allow Facebook users to flag a story as "purposefully fake or deceitful news" to reduce the distribution of news stories reported as hoaxes. Facebook said it will not remove fake news stories from its website. Instead, the company's algorithm, which determines how widely user posts are distributed, will take into account hoax reports. "A post with a...

It was a subtler snub than the Obama administration’s 2009 claim that Fox News was “a wing of the Republican party.” But that didn’t stop Fox anchor Shepard Smith from calling out the White House for slighting the news network at Tuesday’s State of the Union lunch. Smith spent much of his on-air news hour waxing poetic about the lunch, which President Obama held in order to lay out his policy proposals before a small group of influential news anchors. But at the end of his broadcast, the Fox anchor pointed out a minor — but almost certainly intentional —...

  • Man convicted of raping unconscious woman 'killed himself' with his own testimony, lawyer says

A Huntsville man doomed by his own testimony, according to his lawyer, was convicted today of raping a woman passed out in the bathroom during a Fourth of July party last year. Jason Scott McNeal, 36, was convicted of first-degree rape - having sex with a person unable to consent because they were physically helpless or mentally incapacitated - after the jury deliberated for more than two hours. McNeal's father testified on his son's behalf, telling jurors the younger McNeal was not a violent person. But his claim was likely undermined for the jury after McNeal's father admitted on cross-examination...

Al Jazeera America’s inevitable collapse has begun with the elimination of all of its morning programming. Instead of producing its own programming, the basement-rated cable news network will simply re-broadcast Al Jazeera programs from its parent studio in Qatar. Also canceled is the late morning program, “Consider This With Antonio Mora.” Mediabistro reports that behind-the-scenes staffers will be reassigned and “the fate of on-air talent is unclear.” Variety, however, reports that primetime anchors Ali Velshi and Joie Chen will have less airtime and mid-to-late afternoon programming is also on the chopping block.

  • Glenn Beck: Every American — black and white, left and right — should see ‘Selma’

Conservative talk radio host and commentator Glenn Beck on Saturday saw a screening of “Selma,” a film shot in the Yellowhammer State about the Alabama city’s role in the Civil Rights struggle, and immediately after it concluded took to Facebook to urge every American to go see it. "We saw Selma tonight. I really wanted to see it but at the same time I worried about the spin of the story. It is an Oprah movie. She attended J. Wright’s church. A student who reported she was raped last month has now changed her story, university spokesman Bob Samples said. The university sent a message to students on Thursday informing them of the new development. “Following a thorough investigation, which included the reporting party meeting with and informing the police investigator that the incident did not occur, the UMSL Police Department has determined that the incident (in a Dec. 18 warning to students) was unfounded,” the message says.
