The drill instructor who allegedly hazed recruit Raheel Siddiqui moments before his death was the same instructor who had previously ordered a Muslim recruit into a commercial clothes dryer and interrogated him about his religion and loyalties. That drill instructor had also called Siddiqui — a 20-year-old Muslim, Pakistani-American from Taylor, Mich. — a “terrorist” at some point during the recruit’s brief time at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, according to a Corps official speaking on background Monday morning. New details about Siddiqui’s death — which the Corps has ruled a suicide — show he initially survived the nearly...

  • More than 5,000 Muslims Serving in US Military, Pentagon Says (December 8, 2015 story)

Despite recent rhetoric against the fastest-growing religion in the world, Islam has contributed a great deal to the U.S., including in the military, Defense Department figures show. Muslims have played an essential part in guarding the homeland and fighting for its interests in war-torn countries the world over, fighting in all major U.S. wars, including the Civil War, World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War, according to military officials. More recently, Muslims have also served in the Gulf War, Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan. Here's what the numbers tell us. There are 5,896 self-identified Muslims...

A heavily redacted report – by former FBI Director William Webster (07/20/2012 “Houston Chronicle”, Page B1) – following a two-year review of the Fort Hood “shooting rampage” by Major Hasan declined to assign individual blame for “failing to prevent the November 2009 tragedy”. Describing the deadliest attack on a U.S. military base (13 killed, 32 wounded) as a “tragedy” is acceptable since “tragic” can also mean “disastrous”. However, Mr. Webster’s statement “(Major Hasan) arrived at the deployment center 11/05/2009 and opened fire shouting ‘God is Great’ in Arabic” contradicts the Department of Defense classification of the major’s massacre as “workplace...

Two U.S. troops were killed Saturday by an Iraqi soldier who apparently smuggled real bullets into a training exercise and opened fire, raising fresh concerns about insurgents worming into the nation’s security forces as the Americans prepare to leave by the end of the year. A U.S. military official said the shooter was immediately killed by American soldiers who were running the morning drill at a training center on a U.S. base in the northern city of Mosul. The U.S. official said the exercise was not meant to involve live ammunition, and an Iraqi army officer said the shooting appeared...

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Military prosecutors have sent a notice indicating they plan to seek the death penalty against the Army psychiatrist charged in the deadly Fort Hood shooting. That's according to defense attorney John Galligan, who says he received the notice Wednesday outlining an aggravating factor - that more than one person was killed in the same incident.

What and when did US Army brass know about Maj. Nidal Hassan’s extremist views and his ties to a key jihadist cleric — and why didn’t they act before he gunned down 13 soldiers at Fort Hood six months ago? It’s a simple question — and a very significant one, to boot. But neither the Pentagon nor the Justice Department wants that information made public. Which is why the two top senators on the Homeland Security Committee — Joe Lieberman (I/D-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) — have subpoenaed stonewalling Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Attorney General Eric Holder. “We have...

At 2 o'clock on a Monday morning, the sound of angry pounding sent Army Spec. Zachari Klawonn bolting out of bed. THUD. THUD. THUD. Someone was mule-kicking the door of his barracks room, leaving marks that weeks later -- long after Army investigators had come and gone -- would still be visible. By the time Klawonn reached the door, the pounding had stopped. All that was left was a note, twice folded and wedged into the doorframe.

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., said Sunday information he received as a member of the House Armed Services Committee showed there was no plot. The five Muslim soldiers who were connected to a translator training program had been detained in December while the Army investigated. "The investigation revealed that there was not an effort to poison food," Wilson said. The probe also showed the men had not been disloyal. Four of the soldiers were discharged from the Army for petty crimes, Wilson said, and the fifth was returned to his National Guard unit in Virginia.

FORT WORTH, Texas (Associated Press) -- An attorney says the Army psychiatrist charged in the worst mass shooting on a U.S. military base will soon be moved to a county jail near Fort Hood after four months in a military hospital. Defense attorney John Galligan says Maj. Nidal Hasan could be moved this week. Bell County Jail administrator Bob Patterson says Hasan will be housed in a cell at the medical unit. Patterson said Monday the facility is prepared to handle inmates with special medical needs.

If there was nothing to the allegations, then why were four of the five Muslim soldiers discharged? It seems to me that the earliest reports were wrong that the five Muslims were plotting to poison Fort Jackson's food supply. But later reports that there were nothing to the allegations were also clarified when we learned that the investigation was not into a plot but over comments about poisoning the food.
