A father of four who had served as an interpreter alongside US special forces in Afghanistan and escaped after the Taliban takeover was gunned down while working as a Lyft driver in Washington, DC, early Monday. Nasrat Ahmad Yar, 31, decided to work a few extra hours for the rideshare service, despite his wife’s protests that night, telling her they needed money for the rent, a friend told WUSA9. He was shot and killed in his car a short time later after they spoke. Shortly after midnight on Monday, DC Metro police found Ahmad Yar with a single gunshot wound...

A majority of the city’s murders since 2015 were committed by suspects who should have been in prison. Baltimore isn’t the country’s murder capital—that distinction belongs to St. Louis—but it’s close. Charm City has recorded more than 2,500 homicides since 2015. Many of these killings could have been prevented .... Look no further than the case of Deonte Walker, convicted of the January 2020 murder of Justin Antonio Johnson. Less than three years before the killing, Mr. Walker was charged with at least 10 counts, and possibly more. (Under a 2020 Maryland law, criminal charges that don’t result in a...
  • Illustrating Chicago Values (homicides in 2016; compare to MLB runs scored)

The linked website has detailed stats. 2016 Stats Preliminary 2016 Totals Shot & Killed: 713 Shot & Wounded: 3665 Total Shot: 4378 Total Homicides: 795 Gun control laws do not seem to be working too well in Chicago. Now compare the 795 homicides in Chicago to runs scored by teams in the 2016 baseball season. Thugs in the city of Chicago had an impressive year. Only three teams scored more runs than Chicago's homicides -- Red Sox, Rockies, and Cubs. At least you have to give credit to the Cubbies for being one of the three.

Welcome To Chicago.Bring your own body armor. How many shootings were there in May? And to think this is the place where they plan to build the Obama Library?, You have to wonder if any construction worker would be having second thoughts now with so many stray bullets flying in all directions. Maybe they need to relocate the planned 200/300 sq.foot Obama library elsewhere? Maybe some place much more safer like Baltimore and Detroit?
  • Rahm Emanuel: Chicago not murder capital

Rahm Emanuel is pushing back against suggestions that violence in his city is out of control, touting new statistics that show violent crime is down in Chicago “The narrative is: We’re the murder capital. Not close,” the Chicago mayor said during an interview with POLITICO. When asked about perception of crime in Chicago, Emanuel was quick to note that he is most concerned with the opinions of his city’s residents about the safety of their communities. But the mayor still seems frustrated with the media, which he feels is focusing on individual incidents of crime without telling the whole story.

The restoration of the University of Illinois’ iconic Alma Mater statue in April of this year comes with very mixed emotions. After undergoing a $300,000, two year restoration effort, our academic mother rests on her pedestal, arms outstretched once again welcoming us to Wright and Green Streets. But haven’t our university and other Illinois colleges and universities really made Illini citizens the children of cobblers who have no shoes? How can the state with such a proud academic and medical reputation be in such horrific disarray? Reading the most recent alumni magazine is disconcerting. “Blue Waters supercomputer on the Urbana...
  • Gun Control? Obama's Chicago New U.S. Murder Capital

Gun Crime: FBI statistics show Chicago, with one-third the population, passing New York City in the number of murders in 2012. Is it time for a national conversation about gang control vs. gun control? President Obama doesn't often mention his hometown when he talks about gun control. Then he'd have to explain, in arguably the most gun-restricted big city in America in the last state to allow concealed carry of firearms, why Chicago is now officially the murder capital of the United States. In new statistics released Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported 500 murders in Chicago in 2012,...

The far nastier truth is that organized criminal gangs are contesting the claim of legitimate government. The weekly murder map of the Tribune's RedEye edition shows where Chicago's murder rates rival those in Baghdad's toughest sectors (chicagotribune.com/homicides). Insurgencies thrive on disorder. The message is that government is unable or unwilling to protect residents and their property. Insurgents -- in Chicago's case, street gangs rather than al-Qaida terrorists, Shiite militias or Afghanistan's Taliban -- fill the void. Like insurgents elsewhere, Chicago gangs recruit members using punishment and rewards. They sometimes murder police informants and collaborators and dispense justice according to their...

Since the Supreme Court upheld the individual right to own guns last summer, one municipality with handgun bans after another has faced reality. Washington, which lost the case, changed its law. Morton Grove repealed its ban. So did Wilmette. Likewise for Evanston. Last week, Winnetka followed suit. Then there is Chicago, which is being sued for violating the 2nd Amendment but refuses to confront the possibility that what the Supreme Court said may apply to this side of the Appalachians. When it comes to firearms, Mayor Richard Daley is no slave to rationality. "Does this lead to everyone having a...

Tenth PlaceBellevue, WA  98005CCRKBA BLASTS BLAGOJEVICH BIGOTRY TOWARD GUN OWNERS, PERSONAL PROTECTIONFor Immediate Release: March 25, 2005 Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has once again placed the Democratic Party's agenda of anti-gun bigotry ahead of the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms and defend themselves, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said today. "A few days ago, Gov. Blagojevich announced that he would veto all pro-gun legislation that comes to his desk," said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron. "That includes...

From Virginia Soto,Your Guide to Chicago. ...to Boost Homicide Rate, Says Second Amendment Foundation Below is a press release from the Second Amendment Foundation, a pro-gun lobby. Before you read it, here are some facts put out by the Chicago police department: According to the police, in 2003 Chicago had the fewest number of homicides since 1967, when 552 people were murdered in our city. The statistics for the year 2003 are the more impressive when one takes into account the "particularly violent spring" the city had. And it was not only the murder rate that declined. The overall "index...

GARY, Ind. (AP) — This northern Indiana city appeared to finish 2003 with the nation's highest per capita homicide rate for the ninth straight year, according to police statistics. Police in Gary, population 103,000, investigated 69 suspicious deaths, 68 of which have been classified as homicides. That total was about 10 percent higher than the 62 in 2002, but down substantially from the 132 people killed in 1995, the Post-Tribune of Merrillville reported Friday. Based on information from police in major U.S. cities, Gary was poised again to post the highest per capita homicide rate for cities with population of...

CHICAGO (Jan. 1) - Despite a sharp drop in homicides, Chicago has regained a title it didn't want: America's murder capital The city finished 2003 with 599 homicides, police said Thursday. That was down from 648 a year earlier and the first time since 1967 that the total dipped below 600. Still, the nation's third-largest city outpaced all others for the second time in three years. New York, with about three times the population, ended the year with 596 homicides. Los Angeles, which had the most murders in 2002 at 658, wound up 2003 with an estimated total just under...

Really, I'm writing this with a straight face . . . sort of. Yeah, sure, I did laugh. But, I stopped laughing before starting to write this article -- mostly, anyway. . . . . It's just that this is the safety advice from public servants to the citizens of our nation's capital -- a city that actually beat out Detroit for the title "Murder Capital USA." Except for politics and lobbying government, Washington’s primary industry is tourism. Actually, it's tourism and a healthy dose of lawbreaking, both in and out of the halls of government. In 1991, when the...
