Baghdad by the Lake: Chicago needs its own counterinsurgency program against violence
Chicago Tribune ^ | 01/10/2010 | Philip R. O'Connor

The far nastier truth is that organized criminal gangs are contesting the claim of legitimate government. The weekly murder map of the Tribune's RedEye edition shows where Chicago's murder rates rival those in Baghdad's toughest sectors (chicagotribune.com/homicides).

Insurgencies thrive on disorder. The message is that government is unable or unwilling to protect residents and their property. Insurgents -- in Chicago's case, street gangs rather than al-Qaida terrorists, Shiite militias or Afghanistan's Taliban -- fill the void.

Like insurgents elsewhere, Chicago gangs recruit members using punishment and rewards. They sometimes murder police informants and collaborators and dispense justice according to their own twisted standards. Insurgents systematically intimidate the local citizenry into acquiescence and inaction. In Baghdad and Chicago, insurgents live on the symbiosis between their violent methods and profitable parasitic activities -- extortion, auto theft, trade in contraband such as drugs and sexual exploitation. As long as the money is there, the insurgency will not die of its own accord.

Thank God that the enlightened leaders of Chi-town have banned guns.

Think of how much worse it would be if criminals had guns too!

I’m over a hundred miles from Chicago, but our local law enforcement sees more than their share of these guys. The Criminal Court drug convictions are generally 40-50% out-of-towners. Most all of the non-meth major dealers caught have Chicago and Detroit addresses.

UAW town.... high wages + low IQs = thriving drug trade.

have 4 awaiting trial right now for killing an 18 yo white girl and wounding another.

recently, major brawl at a nightclub when they brought a busload down for hip-hop night. Cops got as many as they could with the manpower they had at the time, but basically let the rest bus on out of town

[snip]Santa Muerte worship is now spreading across the border to cities such as Houston, Chicago, and Los Angeles, where middle-class Mexicans say they’re trying to reconnect with a part of their heritage.

La Familia’ North of the Border (Mexico’s Narcoterror is here)
Fri Dec 4
In an indictment handed down Nov. 20 ....accused 15 individuals of being involved in the trafficking of cocaine and other narcotics in the Chicago area. .... What is certain, at this point, is that there is now a precedent for Mexican DTOs to have a greater influence over their lower-level supply-chain operations in the United States. ....and prove that at least one, “La Familia,” is taking a very hands-on approach.

I know! Drop the testing requirement to be a police officer and hire the gang bangers. Problem solved.
