Perhaps the decisive factors in combating poverty and enabling upward mobility were not economic but cultural — the habits, mores and dispositions that equip individuals to take advantage of opportunities. This was dismaying because governments know how to alter incentives and remove barriers but not how to manipulate culture. The assumption that the condition of the poor must improve as macroeconomic conditions improve was to be refuted by a deepened understanding of the crucial role of the family as the primary transmitter of the social capital essential for self-reliance and betterment. Family structure is the primary predictor of social outcomes,...

The state police fire marshal today said a cigarette was the cause of a fatal motel fire in Westmoreland County on Thursday. Timothy Paul Shane, 43, of Hempfield was killed in the fire at the Motel 3 on Route 30 in Adamsburg, according to the county coroner’s office. State police fire marshal Scott Mackanick ruled the fire an accident and said Mr. Shane was smoking a cigarette that ignited the blaze around 6:30 a.m. A section of Route 30 was closed in the area of the fire, as was the Irwin exit off of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Mr. Shane’s cause...

Almonds alone use about 10 percent of California’s total water supply each year. That’s nuts. But almonds are also the state’s most lucrative exported agricultural product, with California producing 80 percent of the world’s supply. Alfalfa hay requires even more water, about 15 percent of the state’s supply. About 70 percent of alfalfa grown in California is used in dairies, and a good portion of the rest is exported to land-poor Asian countries like Japan. Yep, that’s right: In the middle of a drought, farmers are shipping fresh hay across the Pacific Ocean. The water that’s locked up in exported...

WASHINGTON — Islamic terror conglomerates ISIS and Boko Haram could join forces as soon as next week after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approved their merger earlier today. Raqqa-based ISIS said it planned to close as soon as next Wednesday on the acquisition of Nigerian terror group Boko Haram after final federal antitrust regulator review. The deal, worth about 2.7 billion sheep, would create a juggernaut in the fast-growing businesses of ethnic cleansing and slavery.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the most audacious physics experiment in human history. Now scientists are about to restart the giant particle collider for a new set of experiments. Last time, they did the almost-impossible and found the Higgs Boson. This time, they might find something even more exciting. Back in 2008, just nine days into its first run of experiments, there was a significant incident at the Large Hadron Collider. A faulty electrical connection between two magnets stopped superconducting, then melted and caused serious mechanical damage to the facility. The accident delayed use of the LHC for six...

Starbucks executive Corey duBrowa recently deleted his twitter account, after what he said were abusive comments as a result of his push for a campaign in which his baristas were to engage with customers about race relations. "I was personally attacked through my Twitter account around midnight last night and the tweets represented a distraction from the respectful conversation we are trying to start around Race Together," duBrowa said. "I’ll be back on Twitter soon." But the whole point of the conversations he promoted, was to get people talking about what is uncomfortable, and controversial. It seems childish to delete...

With the publication of the House and Senate budget resolutions this week, the contrast between Republicans and Democrats could not be more stark. Democrats want to take care of you. Republicans want you to get ahead. It is not just that President Obama’s budget, released in February, projects an $687 billion deficit in 2025, up from $486 billion this year, and the Republican budget projects a surplus. It’s that Democratic proposals are centered on keeping people safe, and Republican proposals are focused on helping them get better jobs and higher incomes. Democrats are telling us that they gave us Obamacare...

There is the mistaken impression that computers represent the future and that everyone, especially the very young, should become computer savvy as soon as possible. According to this view, failure to expose children to high technology handicaps their ability to function in the real world. However, in the real world, addiction to the omnipresent small screens can be an actual handicap. Discouraging overexposure to technology might actually be an advantage in today’s hyper-connected world. Such views are not those of overprotective parents unfamiliar with these technologies. Even the most enthusiastic promoters of computer gadgetry can be seen discouraging the very...

A Google News search at 3 p.m. Eastern Time today for stories published in March about "Eva Carmichael" (in quotes; sorted by date) returned only 11 items. Who is Eva Carmichael? She is a 94 year-old woman who was murdered in Meridian, Mississippi on March 1. Based on the complete lack of press coverage outside of the immediate area, it's reasonable to believe that the nation's journalists don't think, in the popular parlance, that "her life mattered" all that much. And why is that? A March 6 Meridian Star story (HT to NewsBusters commenter "noncom") reported that "Four teenagers have...

Man dies and goes to heaven. At the Pearly Gates, he's greeted by an angel. Inside is a large court yard with clocks and different times on each of the clocks. He asks the Angel, "What are all those clocks for ?" "Oh," says the angel, "those clocks are from the most famous people on earth - for each lie one tells, the clock advances 1 second." "Hmmmm," say the man, " How come that clock only advanced one second?" "Oh, that one belongs to Mother Teresa," said the angel. "Well what about that one ?" Said the man, "It...

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — KCBS has learned that Saint Mary’s Cathedral, the principal church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, has installed a watering system to keep the homeless from sleeping in the cathedral’s doorways. The cathedral, at Geary and Gough, is the home church of the Archbishop. There are four tall side doors, with sheltered alcoves, that attract homeless people at night. “They actually have signs in there that say, ‘No Trespassing,’” said a homeless man named Robert. But there are no signs warning the homeless about what happens in these doorways, at various times, all through the night....

Donna Tellam was among the 33 passengers and six crew members aboard the Denver-bound flight that left Dulles about 10:15 p.m. She was relaxing in her seat in first class, playing a game on her phone, when a man came running down the aisle toward the cockpit. He was waving his arms and yelling, she said. The man, whom Tellam described as small and thin with dark hair, was clearly distressed. He kept saying that the plane "was going too slow, that it was going to fall... and all of us were going to die," Tellam said Tuesday, recounting the...

Yesterday Ferguson police shooter Jeffrey Williams’ attorney, Jerryl Christmas, made the claim that his client was beaten by Saint Louis Police during his arrest. Attorney Christmas, and Ferguson protest leader, Bishop Derrick Robinson, have now both made that claim. As noted in the Saint Louis media: […] “Jerryl Christmas, also claimed that Williams was beaten during the arrest, a claim that police deny”. […] “Christmas said Williams had bruises on his back, neck and face as well as a knot on the back of his head, allegedly from the butt of an officer’s gun”. (link) However, we have uncovered media...

“Empire” star Terrence Howard has strong opinions about the use of the N-word on their hit Fox TV show. Though the actor differs from costar Taraji P. Henson, who said earlier today she’s against the use of the word, Howard thinks it’s time to get real. The Oscar nominee wants to drop the stigma surrounding the word which he believes would make the Lee Daniels hip-hop drama feel more authentic.

I have to admit I was very pessimistic throughout this election day. With all the knives out for Netanyahu and foreign money busing thousands of Arab students into polling stations, it was like a Yom Kippur War on all fronts, with ballots instead of bullets. Well, that's democracy - you may well say. But not when foreign governments and viscerally anti-Jewish fatcats and NGOs are blatantly undermining that democracy with public or tax-exempt funds. I'm glad that the Republican senate has launched its inquiry to track this money back to its shadowy sources with subpoena powers. Let these folks be...
