The state police fire marshal today said a cigarette was the cause of a fatal motel fire in Westmoreland County on Thursday.
Timothy Paul Shane, 43, of Hempfield was killed in the fire at the Motel 3 on Route 30 in Adamsburg, according to the county coroners office.
State police fire marshal Scott Mackanick ruled the fire an accident and said Mr. Shane was smoking a cigarette that ignited the blaze around 6:30 a.m.
A section of Route 30 was closed in the area of the fire, as was the Irwin exit off of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Mr. Shanes cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results from an autopsy, the fire marshal said.

Cigarette violence? :-)
ping!
We'll leave the fire on for you.
LMAO
Thanks for the ping!
Remember I said I was listening on the scanner app? It sounded like the room the fire started in was full of debris (they didn’t find the deceased until a third sweep of the room—too much smoke/flames). So I wonder if hoarding was an issue.
I was surprised to learn hydrants arent on BOTH sides of the highway?!?
” Mr. Shanes cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results from an autopsy,”
Drunk or on drugs, or maybe both.
It looks quite “rustic” in the picture...
Actually, it’s a long term residence (low income housing) type place that had furnished apartments. From what I understand, the other residence of the other housing units pretty much lost everything.
The PG article (surprisingly) doesn’t alude to that...
The Adamsburg Motel 3 was more of a low income, long term residence type place. It’s located less than a 5 minute drive from my house, on a very busy highway.
Yesterday morning I was on FR (a daily chat thread for fans of the former Quinn&Rose radio show) when I commented that “all hell” was breaking out with fire whistles and sirens. And was sad to learn (listening to phone app of local emergency channel) that they had “found” a victim. All our fire coverage is volunteer. It was a rough day for many of those guys.
Motel 3... when Motel 6 is financially out of reach.
There are a LOT of those here in Indiana that have become too seedy for tourists and are basically relatively cheap weekly rentals for the poor - folks who can’t swing an apartment deposit.
They get a lot of police runs too.
Sounds like they are going to have to outlaw motels.
I don’t believe it. The feds mandated a chemical that prevents cigarettes from staying lit long enough to start a fire.
I was chatting with a tobacco shop owner last fall and the local news was blathering on in the background. They were reporting on some fire in a downtown area and they actually said the cause was from a cigarette that “a witness saw discarded 3 hours earlier and that the cigarette smoldered for 3 hours before lighting the brush on fire.”
I turned to the tobacco shop owner and asked him to sell me a pack of those 3 hour cigarettes. He denied that they existed! He must only be selling them to his favorite customers! (some sarc there...)
Anyway, I think that cigarettes get the blame as almost a default in many cases.
Nice!
