LOS ANGELES (AP) — Another tough U.S. House race is shaping up in Southern California. Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel announced Thursday that she's challenging first-term Rep. Harley Rouda, whose victory in the coastal 48th District last year helped Democrats retake control of the House. [snip] ...In the neighboring 39th District, Republican Young Kim has announced her candidacy and is hoping to set up a rematch with Democrat Gil Cisneros, who defeated her in 2018. Last month, Orange County prosecutor Ray Gennawey, a Republican, announced his campaign in the county's 45th District, where Democrat Katie Porter defeated Republican Rep. Mimi...

Very few people took notice when far left Governor Jerry Brown signed the changes in AB1921 into law two years ago. As a result, California lost 7 of its 14 Republican House seats this election cycle. Ballot harvesting is illegal in most states. In Texas, New York and Pennsylvania they arrest people for ballot harvesting. Orange County, traditionally a conservative enclave in Southern California turned all blue after Democrats found hundreds of thousands of votes post election day. Republicans such as Mimi Walters, Dana Rohrabacher and Young Kim were all ahead election night only to lose their races after late...

A Democrat from California who trailed by just over 6,200 votes after election night tallying has now overtaken Rep. Mimi Walters (R-Calif.), and will win yet another Congressional seat. “On Thursday, the Associated Press projected that Democrat Katie Porter has defeated two-term GOP. Rep. Mimi Walters in the race to represent the county’s inland 45th Congressional District,” according to The Orange County Register. Officially, Porter is now winning the race by 6,203 votes after trailing by 6,233 when votes were originally counted. Porter reportedly won 58 percent of votes that have been counted since the night of the election.

It’s been a few years since married couple Marylee and Grayson Sanders have volunteered for political campaigns — her last was for the younger Bush, his for Eisenhower, passing out “I like Ike” signs in the 1950s. Saturday morning, they spent hours making hundreds of calls at the Irvine campaign headquarters of Rep. Mimi Walters, trying to get voters out to the polls to keep her in office and hold on to Republican control of the House. Marylee, 74, said she was motivated to get involved after the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings because she felt the then-nominee to the Supreme...
  • In key California House races, Republicans are turning out early and big

With the midterm elections just days away, there’s little indication that California is seeing a “blue wave” of Democratic votes, at least in the early returns of vote-by-mail ballots — and in some key races that will help determine control of the House, Republican voter response has been strong. There are still a lot more ballots to come in, cautioned Paul Mitchell, vice president of Political Data Inc., which supplies voter information to a variety of political campaigns. But so far, according to a mail ballot tracker he runs, Republican votes are keeping pace with the number of Democratic ballots....
  • Amid Shouts of 'Shame,' House GOP Defeats Gay Rights Measure

Democrats shouted "Shame! Shame!," but seven Republicans switched their votes and defeated a measure to protect gay rights. The final vote was 213-212 after the chaos on the House floor. That was enough to defeat an amendment by Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., aimed at upholding an executive order that bars discrimination against LGBT employees by federal contractors. Maloney and other Democrats were incensed. "They literally snatched discrimination from the jaws of equality," Maloney said. He said he had approached Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as McCarthy worked on GOP colleagues to vote against the measure. McCarthy told Maloney to...

To keep conservative rebels in check, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and his allies have been doling out punishments at an aggressive clip in the 114th Congress. From kicking unruly members off the Rules Committee and GOP whip team to stripping a lawmaker of his subcommittee gavel, leadership has been growing more comfortable with taking retaliatory measures to try to enforce party discipline. But several Tea Party targets haven’t gone quietly. They’ve been fighting back with help from Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan’s conservative House Freedom Caucus, which successfully pressured leaders this week to return a subcommittee gavel to one of their...
  • BUSTED:BUSTED: FRESHMAN GOP REP ADMITS SHE HASN’T READ OBAMATRADE, BACKS MSNBC’S DEFENSE OF DEAL SEC

Freshman GOP congresswoman Rep. Mimi Walters has been on television pushing Obamatrade—appearing Monday on Morning Joe on MSNBC to do so—but her office admits publicly she hasn’t read the bill she wants to fast-track through Congress. Walters, whom Mika Brzezinski noted is the official “liaison” between House GOP freshmen and Speaker Rep. John Boehner’s leadership team, appeared on Morning Joe to push Obamatrade. Walters said: Currently, what we are working on is Trade Promotion Authority. That issue we expect to take up by the end of the month. And what Trade Promotion Authority, known as TPA, is it’s really the...

Five-term Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., announced on Thursday that he will retire at the end of his term, citing a desire to start a new chapter in his life after 14 years in elected office. “At the end of this term, I will have spent 14 years serving in full-time, elected politics. I am not nor did I ever intend to be a career politician,” Campbell said in a statement. “I am ready to begin a new chapter in my life.” Campbell was first elected to Congress in a 2005 special election to replace former Rep. Christopher Cox, a Republican,...

SACRAMENTO -- Republicans have yet to emerge with an official set of demands they'd want met before considering Gov. Jerry Brown's budget proposal, but pension reform will top the list once they do. Sen. Mimi Walters, R-Laguna Hills, is preparing a package of pension reform bills she said must be addressed before taking up taxes. Among her reforms is legislation requiring all new state employees to enter 401(k)-style benefit plans. "We want reforms in place before there's any discussion about tax increases," said Walters, the GOP's nominee last fall for state treasurer who was trounced by incumbent Bill Lockyer. "I...

Republicans in California "as a brand," said former GOP party chair Duf Sundheim, "are dead." Ouch. Not that we didn't already know that -- and we told you the other day about some trying to do mouth-to-mouth on the GOP (sorry about the image). But Duf's nugget at the end of a discussion about California's 2010 gubernatorial primary was one of several things we learned here at the lovely Hotel Shattuck at UC-Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies looky-loo-back at the 2010 Guv race. As the name hints, this confab is like a rave for political geeks-- and those who aspire...

Today, the Protect Our Homes Coalition will announce that they are turning in over a million signatures in County Registrar offices all around the state, virtually assuring that this important measure to protect Californians from eminent domain abuse will appear on the November ballot. Assemblywoman Mimi Walters (R-Laguna Niguel - pictured to the right)) is serving as the Honorary Chairman of the Coalition, and she will be announcing the big news formally later today. “The Protect Our Homes Initiative will restore the rights of homeowners and small businesses that were gutted by the Supreme Court’s outrageous decision in the Kelo...
