The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Politifact.com have been tracking Gov. Scott Walker’s election campaign promises through an online feature they call the “Walk-O-Meter” and can be found online at PolitifactWisconsin.com. There you will find that Walker has kept an overwhelming amount of his campaign promises out of the 65 they are tracking.
  • Death of Sierra Guyton should be a wake-up call for everyone

Sierra Guyton put up a long fight, but on Sunday her young body finally succumbed to her injuries. It was two months ago that a dispute between two men ended in gunfire and 10-year-old Sierra was shot in the head as she played at the Clarke Street Elementary School playground. Sierra died about 1:35 a.m. Sunday at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. She was taken off life support June 25, but survived another 2 1/2 weeks. If an effort ever was needed to get young black men to put down their guns and settle their disputes in a sensible manner, this...

When a major American city such as Chicago reports 82 people shot and 14 killed over a violent holiday weekend, it's time to take notice. Describing some parts of the inner city as "the Wild, Wild West" or "an urban war zone" to make a point about lawlessness just doesn't cut it anymore. It's time to call it what it is: an epidemic of gun violence as deadly as any infectious disease or plague that any health professional can imagine. When Mallory O'Brien, executive director of the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission, looks at the levels of gun violence in cities...

Activists blocked garage doors for two hours Thursday morning at the downtown Milwaukee office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to protest recent immigration raids in the city. "This is a pragmatic action, not a symbolic one," said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of the immigration advocacy group Voces de la Frontera. "We're literally shutting down ICE." The protest is part of the national "Not One More" campaign organized by the National Day Labor Organizing Network, which has orchestrated rallies and acts of civil disobedience in cities across the U.S. this spring. With Congress stalled on immigration reform and deportations under...

MILWAUKEE -- There was a profanity-laced outburst in court Thursday from a teenager accused of shooting 10-year-old Sierra Guyton. Sylvester Lewis faced a judge for the first time today. The outburst came after Lewis refused to sign a "no contact" order, which ordered him to stay away from Sierra Guyton's family and eyewitnesses.

Milwaukee Ald. Ashanti Hamilton got to the heart of the matter at a community meeting on the north side Monday when he said, "We all have a role to play in the condition of the city. Ninety percent of the work doesn't cost money. It's a change in the mind-set of the people who live right here." Of course, a few more police on the streets also can help. Hamilton spoke at a meeting of the Black Male Achievement Advisory Committee, but that meeting — with more than 100 people in attendance — turned into a community forum on violence...

Milwaukee police who forced their way into a gun rights advocate's home without a warrant, took her for an emergency mental evaluation and seized her gun were justified under the circumstances and protected from her civil rights claims, a federal appeals court has ruled. "The intrusions upon Sutterfield's privacy were profound," Judge Ilana Rovner wrote for three-judge panel. "At the core of the privacy protected by the Fourth Amendment is the right to be let alone in one's home." But the court also found, that on the other hand, "There is no suggestion that (police) acted for any reason other...

A Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Deputy rolls through a stop sign and causes a violent crash. So why was the victim placed under arrest? A FOX6 Investigation finds that a deputy’s changing story may have changed one woman’s life forever. Tanya Weyker was hurt so badly, she couldn’t blow into a breath-testing device or perform field sobriety tests. But a Sheriff’s deputy arrested her for drunk driving anyway. And the County hung those charges over her head for nearly a year, even long after blood tests proved she was perfectly sober.

Madison — A federal judge kept alive a lawsuit Tuesday attempting to throw out a long-running secret investigation of fundraising and spending by conservative groups during Wisconsin's recent recall elections. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm and others have been looking into whether the Wisconsin Club for Growth or others illegally coordinated with any candidates during the recalls. In the most prominent race, Gov. Scott Walker in June 2012 became the first governor in the country's history to survive a recall election. The Club for Growth and one of its directors, Eric O'Keefe, in February sued prosecutors, investigators and the...

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm announced Wednesday that Jeremy Rossetto will not be charged in connection with the March 12 shooting death of two teens who were hitting him with a souvenir baseball bat. The district attorney's office reviewed the police investigation, interviewed witnesses and viewed witness cellphone video before concluding that Rossetto shot the teens in self defense.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — FOX6 News is learning more after two teens were shot to death on Milwaukee’s north side on Wednesday afternoon, March 12th. Milwaukee police say a 39-year-old maintenance worker is in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail in connection with the shooting. But could this be a case of self-defense? A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were shot and killed in an apartment building near 27th and Vliet on Wednesday afternoon. The shooting reportedly occurred after some sort of argument. Milwaukee police on Thursday identified the 19-year-old and 17-year-old. The 19-year-old is identified as James Bell, Jr....

A Response (in red) to Reverend Shimek's Defense of Common Core in the Milwaukee Archdiocese (below): Catholic Schools Can Make Good Use of the Common Core When it comes to the Catholic Church’s fundamental mission in the contemporary world, Catholic schools are essential and not optional. (If Catholic schools are truly "essential and not optional," why do the American bishops spend millions of dollars each year supporting anti-Catholic community organizing groups rather than investing that money in Catholic schools, especially inner city Catholic schools?) In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, they are precious jewels that adorn our proud history of catechesis,...

Many times we have focused on liberal hypocrites or establishment politicians as our Jerk of the Week recipients. However, there is one category of scum that truly deserves our scorn and disgust. I'm speaking of those who use the power of government to harass their political foes and attempt to stifle their God-given rights as enumerated in our Constitution. That's why our Jerk of the Week is John Chisholm, the Milwaukee County District Attorney. A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed early this week against the special prosecutor, the presiding judge, and top prosecutors in the Milwaukee County District Attorney's...

A rare Stradivarius violin on loan to Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Frank Almond was stolen during an armed robbery Monday night. The instrument, known in musical circles as the Lipinski violin, was taken around 10:20 p.m. Monday in a parking lot in the rear of Wisconsin Lutheran College on W. Wisconsin Ave., police said. Almond had played a concert at Wisconsin Lutheran Monday evening as part of his Frankly Music series. In a 2008 feature on the violin, Chicago violin dealer Stefan Hersh said the Lipinski violin was comparable in value to another Strad that sold for more than $3.5...

Chicago violin dealer Stefan Hersh, a close friend of Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Frank Almond, said he was stunned when Almond called to tell him that robbers Monday evening took the priceless Stradivarius violin he plays. "I've never heard of an armed robbery for a violin," said Hersh, founder of Darnton & Hersh Fine Violins, which buys and sells rare instruments. Hersh, also a violinist himself, examined the Lipinski Stradivarius with Almond when the instrument's anonymous owner offered to loan it to Almond. Almond has played the instrument in concert since 2008. Hersh said his initial presumption was that the...

According to the White House, the speech will be optimistic and focus on the middle class. The end of 2013 brought a measure of closure to a long-running Milwaukee police scandal, though some say the officer — and his cohorts — who repeatedly and illegally shoved his fingers up black male suspects’ anal cavities got off with a light sentence considering the flagrant nature of his abuses. The ringleader was identified as officer Michael Vagnini, a white man who routinely targeted black males as young as fifteen for sadistic — and blatantly illegal — anal searches. One victim said that another officer put a gun to his head while Vagnini administered a choke hold, touched his...
