In January 2017, Igor Danchenko, a primary source for the Steele dossier, told FBI officials in a debriefing that one of his sources for derogatory information about Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia was merely an anonymous voice on the other end of a phone call that lasted 10-15 minutes. The Washington Post has amended at least a dozen reports investigating the genesis and fallout of the Steele dossier, an opposition research project that is almost certainly a work of total fiction if not Russian counterintelligence propaganda. Two articles in particular, one from 2017 and one from 2019 , have undergone significant edits, with major portions of the reporting removed entirely. Both stories also bear lengthy editor’s notes. An email sent by George Papadopoulos last year provides the first hard evidence that the former Trump campaign adviser was friends with Sergei Millian, an alleged source for some of the most salacious claims in the infamous Steele dossier.
