  • Ukraine conflict: Russia accused of shooting down jet

A Ukrainian security spokesman has accused Russia's air force of shooting down one of its jets while it was on a mission over Ukrainian territory. Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council, said an Su-25 ground attack plane was downed on Wednesday evening. Amateur video posted on Wednesday is said to show a plane being hit over Ukraine's eastern region of Luhansk. The rebels say they shot down two Su-25 jets on Wednesday. They were downed during fighting at the Marinivka border crossing, according to rebel commander Igor "Strelkov" Girkin. So far there has been no...

One thing that you can say for ISIS, the Middle-East terrorist army, is that it doesn’t have a recruitment problem. Young men are streaming to Syria and Iraq from all over the world to join the cause. And they come not just from the Muslim world, but also from England, France, Sweden, Australia, and the U.S.Perhaps hoping to put a dent in the appeal of ISIS, some Western newspapers have made much of the expensive stolen watch visible on the wrist of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during his first public appearance at the Grand Mosque in Mosul. According to...

Defense lawyers in the Jesse Ventura defamation case rolled out a parade of witnesses Wednesday claiming Ventura got punched out in a California bar. That’s the claim in the best-selling war memoir “American Sniper” by the deceased author Chris Kyle. It’s about to be made into a movie. But the bar fight is a claim Ventura says never happened. For the last two days, Navy SEALs have claimed in court that they saw one part or another of the bar fight. Ventura, described in the book as “scruff face,” is accused of shooting off his mouth about the war and...

Russia’s war with the West will go on, but in a much subtler form. "In the 21st century we have seen a tendency toward blurring the lines between the states of war and peace,” Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov wrote in the Voyenno Promyshlennyy Kuryer (Military-Industrial Courier) last year. “Wars are no longer declared and, having begun, proceed according to an unfamiliar template.”

The U.S. military does not fully reflect the demography of the United States, at least not in terms of the places American service members hail from. According to data from the Census Bureau's 2013 population estimates and the Department of Defense, young adults from some states are more likely to enlist in the military. As the above map demonstrates people between the ages of 18 and 24 from Florida, Georgia, or Maine, are more likely to join the armed forces than their counterparts in lower enlistment-rate states like North Dakota or Utah. These differences exist at the regional level...

Boeing briefed reporters on the Army-led Joint Multi Role rotorcraft project – intended as a high-tech replacement for most of the thousands of helicopters in the Pentagon’s fleets - in Mesa, Arizona, late last month. “We’ve shot ourselves in the foot twice,” I said, “and we are all out of feet.” My comment was not exactly diplomatic, but the JMR vision of a one-size-fits-all, fast and efficient rotorcraft technology platform that would leave the rest of the world in the dust gave me double flashbacks: to the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor and the LHX/Comanche, which had similar goals and fell far...

One of the largest collections of military machines in the United States is being auctioned July 11-12 in California. It was curated over the years by the late Jacques Littlefield, who housed the collection at his Military Vehicle Technology Foundation in Portola Valley. After Littlefield’s death in 2009, the collection was acquired by the Collings Foundation, an educational organization whose mission is to preserve the history of military automobiles and aircraft.

In a callous and unreasonable act of complete disregard for our military, Obama’s Defense Department has sent pink slips to military officers serving on the battlefield in Afghanistan. This reminds one of the treatment of victims of Nadal Hassan in Ft. Hood, but it gets even more intriguing. While this is going on, the Pentagon and the military are looking to keep and employ more Muslims. According to a report by the World Tribune, officials said the ‘Defense Department has been keeping records and tracking Muslims so they can encourage their presence and continued advancement in the military.’

MOVING BEYOND CAPE BOJADOR The early Portuguese explorers believed that the oceans were impassable below Cape Bojador, a point on the West African coast. When sailors set aside their fears and moved past Cape Bojador, they found that their fears were groundless, that their limitations were imaginary. We all have our own Cape Bojador. We fear things that we need not fear. We draw boundaries around areas of our lives and decide that we can't go past them. Since we believe these false paradigms, we will stay within their artificial boundaries and lose whatever experiences we...
