"The truck’s windshield explodes into shards of glass as their rounds take it apart and tear into the body of the son of a b@@@@ trying to get past them to kill their brothers.....American and Iraqi – bedded down in the barracks, totally unaware that their lives at that moment depended entirely on two Marines standing their ground. Yale and Haerter never hesitated. By all reports and by the recording, they never stepped back....."

Bill and Hillary Clinton appeared together at a Memorial Day parade in their adoptive hometown on Monday, their first joint appearance since the unveiling of her 2016 Democratic presidential campaign more than six weeks ago. The Clintons snapped photos with attendees and marched behind veterans at the parade in Chappaqua, N.Y., but avoided talk about the former secretary of State's White House bid. "This is a way of demonstrating that they are not forgotten, and we are going to continue to do everything that we can to make sure that we honor their sacrifice and commitment," Hillary Clinton told a...

"Today, fewer than 10,000 troops remain on a mission to train and assist Afghan forces. We’ll continue to bring them home and reduce our forces further, down to an embassy presence by the end of next year," Obama said.

They have long been overrepresented in the military, serving and dying for a country that has not always celebrated their freedom or rewarded their sacrifice.Memorial Day is a sacred occasion when we pay tribute to all the military men and women who have died in service to the United States. It is also an observance that owes its creation to blacks. This tradition began when newly freed slaves decorated the grave sites of Civil War soldiers as a way to honor those who had fought for their freedom. But blacks were not just passive bystanders. Many of volunteered to...

The Army deployed 65 infantry divisions for the Second World War. Each was a small town with its own equivalents for community services plus eight categories of combat arms. Units such as artillery, engineering, and heavy weapons engaged the enemy directly. Yet of all categories, the foot soldier faced the greatest hazard with the least chance of reward. Except for the Purple Heart and the coveted Combat Infantryman’s Badge, recognition often eluded them because so few came through to testify to the valor of the many. The infantryman confronted the most dismal fate of all whose duty was uninterrupted by...

In Harm’s Way: The Forgotten Service of Military Chaplains George J. Galloway In Otto Preminger’s 1965 classic movie In Harm’s Way, starring John Wayne as “Rock Torrey†and Kirk Douglas as “Commander Paul Eddington,†there’s an interesting dialogue that ensues after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the subsequent return of the cruiser Swayback to the lagoon-shaped sanctuary, now burial ground for thousands of American sailors, in Oahu. It’s a direct reference to a famous quote from John Paul Jones: “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast, for I intend to go in harm’s...

For more than two decades, thousands of African American motorcyclists have traveled across the nation to South Carolina, to attend the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest. On the last weekend in May every year, the low hum of customized choppers with high-handle bars and the high-pitched revs of neon-painted street bikes have sounded out on Ocean Boulevard. The 2015 Bikefest, however, was different. Ocean Boulevard, a two-lane commercial strip running parallel to the Atlantic Ocean, was partially closed. Hundreds of police officers enforced a one-way traffic pattern that clogged streets for miles and forced motorcyclists to idle in gridlock for...

THE NATIONAL STATUARY HALL COLLECTION By user:Southgeist [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsOne of the most popular tourist destinations in Washington, D.C. is National Statuary Hall. Also known as the Old Hall of the House, it’s a semicircular gallery immediately south of the Capitol Rotunda. For nearly fifty years—from 1807 through 1857—Statuary Hall served as the meeting place for the House of Representatives. The Hall now houses many of the 100 statues of great Americans (two from each state) which together comprise the National Statuary Hall Collection. It’s an extraordinary honor for the men and women depicted here to have been...

It’s difficult to describe anything as a “feel good story†on a day when we are commemorating the Honored Dead, but I suppose this story comes as close as any. CBS News is providing the details of a tale which took place long ago in a small village a bit to the north of where I live, in Gowanda, New York. They have a war memorial in their town just like so many other places around the country. But for the lifetime of most of the current residents, one name has been missing. Carroll Heath was a young boy born...

Fighting soldiers from the sky Fearless men who jump and die Men who mean just what they say The brave men of the Green Beret Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men we'll test today But only three win the Green Beret Trained to live, off nature's land Trained in combat, hand to hand Men who fight by night and day Courage deep, from the Green Beret Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men we'll test today But only three win the Green Beret Back at home a...

To my comrades, fellow veterans of the Global War on Terror (GWOT): on this Memorial Day I call you to action. Do not let others define our generation and our service. Define yourselves. In a time where victimhood is celebrated, where discourse is dominated by ineffectual and verbose liberal academics, and society led by inept deceivers – we alone showed the world for the seven years after 9/11/01 that America was the indisputable world super power and that darkness could never put out the light. To the contrary, the light would come with insurmountable power to punish its enemies. We...

Remember On this day, remember The men who died And, for their sake, don't ever forget The loved ones they left behind They gave it all For you and me They paid the full and final price To keep us strong and free Despite their worst fears They took the bloody field They faced the awful foe They would not yield Greater love for his friends Can no man show Than to give his life And take the blow Christ set the perfect example Long ago, across the sea Of service, of sacrifice, of suffering To set, and to keep,...

Do Americans really want to remember their war heroes? If by saying “remember,” we mean it in the same sense in which we remember things like the 2004 World Series, the television show Cheers, or the Ford administration, then sure, we can take some time to think of those who have given their lives in war. But in reality, Memorial Day ought to involve something more substantive than merely remembering. What the day really calls for is commemorating, but very little in our contemporary culture is particularly attuned to having the orientation toward history that would make this truly...

One of the most stirring Memorial Day speeches given by an American president wasn’t even intended as a Memorial Day speech. It was Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural “We are Americans” address, in which he described the American hero. “Those who say we’re in a time when there are no heroes — they just don’t know where to look,” he said. “The sloping hills of Arlington National Cemetery, with its row upon row of simple white markers bearing crosses or Stars of David, they add up to only a tiny fraction of the price that has been paid for our freedom.”...
