  • Gallup Poll: Americans' Trust in Mass Media Sinks to New Low

    Gallup ^ | September 14, 2016 | Art Swift
Americans' trust and confidence in the mass media "to report the news fully, accurately and fairly" has dropped to its lowest level in Gallup polling history, with 32% saying they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media. This is down eight percentage points from last year. [Snip] Republicans Fuel Drop in Media TrustWhile it is clear Americans' trust in the media has been eroding over time, the election campaign may be the reason that it has fallen so sharply this year. With many Republican leaders and conservative pundits saying Hillary Clinton has received overly positive...

It is said that history turns on small hinges, and now maybe the presidential race does, too. For hinges don’t get much smaller than the 20-second video of Hillary Clinton collapsing and being lifted into her security vehicle. Without it, Americans would still be clueless about Clinton’s serious health issues. Because of it, she was forced to admit she has pneumonia. Because they were scooped by the video, an army of journalists is now under pressure to report facts instead of covering them up. Most important, voters got fresh proof that Clinton’s first instinct is to lie, and then lie...

A Virginia gun-rights group is suing Katie Couric and the producers of the documentary “Under the Gun” for $12 million in defamation over an interview that was revealed to have been deceptively edited. The Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) and two gun-rights activists featured in the film, Daniel Hawes and Patricia Webb, are suing Ms. Couric, who produced the documentary and led the interview in question, as well as director Stephanie Soechtig, Atlas Films and Epix, the film’s distributor. The suit filed in federal court Tuesday, obtained by BearingArms.com, claimed the producers of the film “intentionally manipulated” footage to make...

Hillary Clinton may have been unwise to say half of Donald Trump's supporters are racists and other "deplorables." But she wasn’t wrong. If anything, when it comes to Trump's racist support, she might have low-balled the number.

A little, that is. Shadi Hamid writes in the LA Times about why Islam isn't like other faiths -- as I've long been explaining here. He explains the reason the Quran is different from the Bible in very articulate terms: Contrary to what many think, there is no Christian equivalent to Koranic "inerrancy," even among far-right evangelicals. Muslims believe the Koran is not only God's word, but God's actual speech -- in other words, every single letter and word in the Koran comes directly from God. This seemingly semantic difference has profound implications. If the Koran is God's speech, and...

When chief of staff Andrew Card knelt down and told George Bush “America is under attack” 15 years ago Sunday, the words he whispered in the president’s ear in a Florida classroom launched what was supposed to be a planned, orderly response to a national emergency. But what followed instead was chaos, a breakdown in communication and protocol that risked international conflict and could have made Sept. 11, 2001, a still bigger tragedy. There were live nukes on the tarmac at U.S. airbases, a failed communications system, and a security protocol for the president and his potential successors — the...

Led by Drudge, there have been questions circulating in the conservative media — and among Trump surrogates like Rudy Giuliani — that "something" is wrong with Clinton for months... A certain sector of conservatives were convinced that more was going on with her health than ever became public and that this was yet another example of the Clintons hiding things from the public. This is a totally ridiculous issue — for lots of reasons... Clinton has released a detailed letter from her personal physician attesting to her overall good health... So, to believe that something is seriously wrong with Clinton,...

Have you noticed that we are becoming increasingly balkanized – by race, religion and in other ways? When an angry black gunman ambushed and killed five police officers and wounded nine other in Dallas, he said he was upset over police shootings of black men and that he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers. When San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem, he said "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton held a press conference Thursday morning at the Westchester, New York airport in which she called on ‘every American’ to think of a way to keep her rival Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump from becoming president. Clinton’s language went beyond the usual boilerplate ‘I’m doing everything I can to win the election and I need your help’ and veered into dog whistle territory hinting at a call for an assassin to keep Trump from the presidency. Clinton said several times that citizens should do ‘everything’ to prevent Trump from being in the White House.

Two weeks ago, the PEW Research Center released a survey showing that gun ownership by households is up to 44% — a 7-percentage point increase in the past two years. Another 5% of households won’t reveal whether they own a gun. Yet, not a single mainstream American media headline has announced the increase. In fact, the media goes out of its way to find polls claiming that Americans are turning away from guns. In their War on Guns they want to give the impression that gun owners are a small, fringe group. Maybe they are hoping that this will have...

Hillary Clinton was never asked about her controversial private email server or her family's foundation during her first formal press conference Thursday in 278 days. Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, addressed reporters on the tarmac in Westchester, N.Y., at a podium in front of her airplane. She was asked six questions over 15 minutes about the tightening polls in the presidential race, and whether she believed she was being treated different in the race because she is a woman.

This is what the Drudge Report looked like Tuesday morning: The reference, in case you missed it, is to an episode of coughing that struck Clinton at a rally in Ohio on Labor Day. (You can watch it here.) Drudge also linked to lots - and lots - of stories about the coughing. This is not new. The Washington Post commissioned a poll of all registered voters and decided to draw conclusions about who holds an electoral advantage from the results. The problem for the Washington Post, and they undoubtedly know this, is that polls of all registered voters always heavily favor Democrats and skew the results in such a way that they are ineffective in determining a likely winner. It may be useful in determining public opinion of all registered voters, but who cares about that when we are talking about who will actually win?
