"We know for a fact that a least one person was armed with a weapon, with a firearm, confronted the deputy, refused to comply with the orders to surrender the firearm, and the deputy responded accordingly," said Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler.

To paraphrase Samuel Johnson: media fact-checks on Barack Obama’s claims about guns may not be done entirely well … but one is surprised to find them done at all. Following Obama’s emotional press conference yesterday, both the Associated Press and the Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler conducted some research into his claims and his proposals. Both of them found serious holes in Obama’s arguments.Let’s start with the AP’s Michael Sisak, who corroborated arguments gun-rights advocates have been making ever since word began leaking out about the executive actions Obama would take: The gun control measures a tearful President Barack Obama...

Friends of pro-life police office Garrett Swasey, the part-time pastor who was killed during the horrific shooting at a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Colorado Springs, have raised almost a quarter of a million to help care for his family after his death. A website devoted to information about crowd-funding campaigns reported just how well the campaign has done: Immediately following the deadly situation, a YouCaring campaign was launched to help the victim’s family. “Garrett was passionate about his role as a police officer, his family and his faith. Originally from Boston, he moved to Colorado Springs in the early...

I'm not one to make light of mass shootings, and I shouldn't have to say that I deplore violence. But that's undoubtedly the charge that will be hurled at me when I say that I can't stand the latest PSA from Everytown for Gun Safety. Stop me if you've heard this before -- some advocacy group rounds up a bunch of celebrities and does a quick-cut video of them all repeating the same mantra. In this case, it's "WE. CAN. END. GUN. VIOLENCE." Now forget for a moment the utter hypocrisy of Hollywood-types who make their living glorifying violence having...

On April 17th of 2015, John Hendricks reacted quickly and accurately to stop a mass shooting, likely saving numerous lives. John Hendricks is a black man who was exercising his Constitutional rights in Chicago, a town where they had been suppressed for generations. Hendricks was taking a break from accepting Uber fares when he saw a man rack a slide on a pistol across the street. Then the man began firing at a group near him. Hendricks acted rapidly and accurately. He fired about six times and hit the attacker three times, an excellent record of 50%, much higher...

Shortly after news broke of a shooting in San Bernardino (which we now know was a terrorist attack), Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit were abuzz that the events of December 2, 2015 were the "355th mass shooting" of 2015. Obviously, this was a concerning statistic--if it were actually true.It turns out it wasn't, and even figures on the left agree. There's been nowhere near 355 mass shootings in 2015, and according to Mother Jones editor Mark Folman, there have been exactly four. At Mother Jones, where I work as an editor, we have compiled an in-depth, open-source database covering more than...

Media Bias: The mainstream press likes to say it is the guardian of truth, protecting the masses from bogus information on the Web. But in the wake of the San Bernardino shooting, it was the one peddling it.

Mass shootings this year already had stained in blood an American church, a health clinic, a movie theater and schools when on Wednesday another wave of gun violence hit a social services center in San Bernardino, killing 14 people and injuring 21. The string of shootings — many of them unfolding in live coverage seen in homes and workplaces — have left many in the country deeply unsettled about the gun violence that has become an all-too-routine part of American life. “It’s becoming commonplace. You check the news; it’s another shooting,†said Harriet Smith, 60, of Sebastopol, who said she...

On Wednesday, as police continued the hunt for the murderers of 14 people in San Bernardino, Calif., mainstream media outlets noted with alarm that "mass shootings" were outpacing the calendar. San Bernardino's massacre was the 355th "mass shooting" -- in 336 days. The Washington Post's Wonkblog even provided a dramatic graphic: The numbers are provocative -- and, unsurprisingly, misleading. The source of the much-publicized data is the "Mass Shooting Tracker" at shootingtracker.com, a crowdsourced page that defines a "mass shooting" as any in which "four or more people are shot in one event, or related series of events, likely...

They were a young father of six and the cousin of an NFL player, a passionate defender of Israel who enjoyed debates and a community worker who dressed up as Santa Claus, some 14 victims in all, representing a tapestry of the multicultural American family, all gathered for what seemed the safest of occasions: a holiday party. The San Bernardino, Calif. Sheriff’s Department late Thursday released the names of those who died Wednesday night when a heavily armed man and woman burst into the room where they were enjoying a county health department banquet and opened fire. The male gunman,...

The Left and their media allies are pushing a new narrative regarding mass shootings. The Washington Post and Boston Globe had massive headlines yesterday claiming there have been 355 mass shootings in 336 days this year, while Vox included it as part of their “fancy stats†on gun violence. It’s enough to make people squeamish about ever owning a gun, let alone hanging out with a gun owner. The problem is the definition of “mass shooting.†All three websites are using the data supplied by crowd-sourcing website shootingtracker.com, which has a really broad definition of what a “mass shooting†actually...

On Sunday, Hillary Clinton slammed Republicans for not being serious about protecting Americans from terrorism. "How many more Americans need to die before we take action?" Clinton asked in response to Friday's shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. She believes that stopping such attacks involves "common-sense steps like comprehensive background checks, closing the loopholes that let guns fall into the wrong hands." Within minutes of the attack in San Bernardino, Calif., yesterday, Clinton pushed again for more regulations. Clinton also wants to crack down on terrorism by prohibiting people on the no-fly list from buying guns. "If...

GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz dropped a response to the latest mass shooting in San Bernadino, California, and it's all class. This is how you respond in the immediate wake of a tragic and still unfolding event.Notice the stark difference between this and the response of liberals on social media.A decent human being waits until the facts are in before having a political discussion about an event where lives were lost.Just one more reason to love Sen. Cruz, wouldn't you agree?

This is news from Louisiana on Sunday. Seventeen people were shot but survived when gunfire erupted on on a playground where a block party was going in New Orleans. If you did not hear about it, do not be surprised. It was barely news. It is amazing to think that there was not a huge media blitz, that there were not the standard outrageous, grandstanding tweets, or the ridiculous parade of pseudo-experts on CNN and MSNBC to spend hours talking about gun control. The endless blog posts, the overwrought editorials. None of those. And why is that?
