    "Manufacturing means making hard and durable products not Sara Lee chocolate cakes that are gobbled down and gone in a day or two..."

    That seems to be a popular, but wrong, perception. Go into any food factory (and that is what it is, a factory), and watch it in action. There is just as much, if not more, automation and IP in its operation as in any Toyota plant.

    Go into a sawmill, and watch the mega-millions of dollars of sophisticated capital equipment (with its inherent IP) reduce a log to finely sized lumber products, or even more complex, into plywood.

    Manufacturing is manufacturing, irregardless of what the raw materials or specific product might be.
