I went to the VA Hospital in La Jolla, California yesterday to fill a prescription and get a new knee brace. While I was there, I asked if they had any Iraq War vets as inpatients. I was told that there were. I then asked if they were receiving enough mail. That was probably a stupid question, because you never get enough mail when you’re in the military. It seems that the majority of letter writing campaigns were focused on the vets at Walter Reed, Bethesda Naval Hospital, and those presently ‘in country’. We need to let the rest of...

My wife's nephew is an Army Reserve MP being shipped to Fort Dix, NJ for training subsequent to being deployed to Iraq. The family is nervous about his deployment (naturally). Apart from the obvious environmental/societal dangers that are part of the equation of there, the kid is pretty well grounded and has a good head on his shoulders, and should come through the experience just fine. But fortune favors the prepared, so I was wondering if some of the more knowledgable Freepers out there could post or freepmail me any info that I could pass on to this kid. What...

NEAR KUT -- An idle mind being the devil's playground, Charlie Company's demons have had ample room to roam of late. After five days parked outside Kut awaiting orders, these men are going stir-crazy. Marines do not suffer inactivity well. At first, the downtime was welcome. Knowing their light-armored vehicles weren't rolling right away meant Marines could string rope between them to use as clothesline, and they did laundry. They took showers. They cleaned weapons. They built fires at night in the windswept desert. And despite orders to stay away from the roadside cigarette dealers, because those hawking smokes could...
