The campaign of Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, who’s been under fire for registering to vote at a barn with an apartment rather than at his homesteaded primary residence, called Republican challenger Tom Rooney a hypocrite today upon learning that Rooney was registered to vote for five years at the Palm Beach Kennel Club dog track. While Rooney was in law school and then in the Army in Texas and at West Point from 1998 to 2003, the address on his voter registration was the Kennel Club, which is owned by the Rooney family. “He used his father’s office address...

Now there's news of a sex scandal... Apparently, Rep. Mahoney is caught up in his own sex scandal: The discrepancies in where Mahoney claims his primary residence and the address listed on his voter I.D. card (a barn) are supposedly due to the fact that Mahoney and his wife no longer share the same address. Apparently, Tim Mahoney, through one of his consultants, has paid a former staffer, Trish Allen, $250,000 in hush money to keep a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by Mrs. Allen against Congressman Mahoney from the public view. This is the reason for the conflicting addresses. Mrs....

At approximately 11 AM local time, three American Christians were arrested in Tiananmen Square. The three arrested are Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Washington DC based Christian Defense Coalition; Brandi Swindell of Boise Idaho, National Director of Generation Life; and Michael McMonagle, of Philadelphia, national Catholic pro-life activist and founder of Generation Life. The same three Americans were also arrested yesterday while holding a banner and speaking out against China's religious persecution. While in custody Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, said, "We were in Tiananmen Square publicly praying for the people of China...

Republicans are having a field day over a flier sent out by U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney that shows an elderly gentleman bedecked with what appear to be Soviet medals. The picture is on the cover of a Mahoney flier labeled: “Honoring Those Who Defend Our Freedom.” The flier touts Mahoney’s record on veterans’ issues. “Is Tim Mahoney’s commitment to our veterans so shallow and superficial that he can’t even tell the difference between an American veteran and one who fought for Communism in Joseph Stalin’s Red Army?? said Ken Spain, press secretary for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

TALLAHASSEE - Elections supervisors in eight counties can post signs at polling places that say a vote for the disgraced former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley is really a vote for his Republican replacement, as long as they name the Democrat, too, the 1st District Court of Appeal said Friday. Despite Foley's resignation nearly a month ago amid accusations that he sent lurid e-mails to congressional pages, his name is stuck on the ballot. While more than 11,000 voters in the 16th Congressional District have already cast votes without signs during early voting, the signs will go up and stay up,...

The Republican Party’s hopes of holding on to the Florida 16th District seat of resigned Florida Republican Rep. Mark Foley are greatly hindered by the fact that Foley’s name, under state law, must stay on the ballot — even though votes cast for him will be counted for state Rep. Joe Negron, the replacement candidate picked by GOP officials. And the GOP endured another hit Wednesday when a state judge, ruling on a lawsuit brought by Democratic activists, barred state election officials from posting signs at voting locations and delivering notices about the ballot situation to 16th District voters. Second...

The story I posted Tuesday on the media's role in the Mark Foley scandal generated an enormous number of emails. The lion's share contained stimulating, illuminating insights such as “You really are full of sxxx.” But among the several hundred messages I received, a few merit a reply...What's more interesting is that some of that money started coming in late last year—around the time that the Foley emails were given to reporters in Florida—

Over the weekend, a few articles were published that argued that the GOP stands a chance in FL 16. Do they? This is an interesting question, one worth taking a second to investigate.First off, most proponents only argue for the possibility that Republican state representative Joe Negron, the man the state party selected to "accept" Foley votes, has a chance. Their objections seem to be against the argument that a Mahoney win is a foregone conclusion. So -- it is not as though they are giving Negron better than even odds. They are just asserting that the odds are...

As time passes, it is increasingly clear that the ABC News report which started the Foley firestorm is odorous—and I’m not talking Chanel. (1) It dealt with the emails which the FBI and many media organizations considered as innocuous as the Republican leadership did. Who circulated these reports is not yet clear.Foley’s spokesman said his opponent, Mahoney had been shopping the story to the media for some time....(much more)

A documentary film featuring an extraordinarily candid interview with a former priest convicted of molesting children has heightened interest among law enforcement officials here in considering a criminal case against Cardinal Roger M. http://constituentdynamics.com/mw/2006/pdf/FL16.pdf http://constituentdynamics.com/mw/2006/pdf/FL16b.pdf Majority Watch asked the question in two different ways. The first link is a sample of 1001 likely voters who were asked simply if they would vote for Foley, the Republican, or Mahoney, the Democrat. Among likely voters there Mahoney led by 7 points, 50-43. Among certain voters (795), Mahoney led by 10 points, 52-42. This question reflects how the ballot will look. The second poll was taken of 1003 likely voters. Among them Mahoney led by only 3 points over Foley. Among certain voters (813 total), Mahoney led by one. The question asked in this poll was:...

Earlier this month, a scant 400 people marched in the Los Angeles Labor Day demonstration in support of illegal immigrants, a dramatic decline compared to the 400,000 who attempted to bring downtown Los Angeles to a halt in May. Still, this didn’t keep Cardinal Roger Mahoney from joining in and proclaiming to tell parishioners at the opulent Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles that “without this immigrant population, this state would be bankrupt.” To the contrary, Mahoney has it backwards. Unless this illegal immigrant invasion is stopped right now, the state of California is certain...

Letter to Editor (Andrea Burman, Northridge) from The Tidings, LA Archdiocese/ under Cardinal Mahoney: "If the Archdiocese would speak as openly and energetically on the issue of parental notification for teen abortions as it does for illegal immigration, the world would be a much better place. "But instead, in the midst of archdiocesan officials and clergy speaking on behalf of illegal immigrants, parishes were sent a letter from the archdiocese forbidding the gathering of signature for the ballot initiative regarding parental notification, citing it as a political issue. "Parental notification, like illegal immigration, is more than mrere politics. Until the...

LOS ANGELES - That Cardinal Roger Mahony attended grammar school here, in the modest St. Charles Borromeo parish more than a half-century ago, was a fact lost on many parishioners on a recent Sunday. But little else is forgotten about the neighborhood-kid-done-good whose national profile has been on the rise, largely for his willingness to take on controversy, especially his stand on illegal immigration. Mahony, 70, who leads the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, is scheduled to participate in today's planned mass protests in Los Angeles, except not the one to be held downtown. Rather, after celebrating noon Mass at...

Pope Benedict XVI has accorded the papal honor of Protonotary Apostolic to four priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and the title of Monsignor to 13 others. Additionally, more than 200 lay and religious men and women received papal honors. Nearly 40 were honored as Knights and Dames of St. Gregory, another 28 as recipients of the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award, and 150 as recipients of the Benemerenti Award. Collectively, the recipients represent a third of the 288 parishes of the archdiocese. Each of the honors is presented in recognition for outstanding service and commitment to the church...

Merrillville native Maureen Mahoney's name being considered as a U.S. Supreme Court nominee doesn't surprise her mother, Marian Mahoney. "I talk to my daughter or e-mail her every day. I've known for some time," said Marian Mahoney in regard to her 51-year-old daughter being mentioned as a potential nominee. Maureen Mahoney confirmed Friday she is a potential nominee, but she said she can't talk about the process leading up to her accepting the nomination. "I already have a dream job, but it's extremely flattering to be considered," she said. She said she has been compared to Supreme Court Chief Justice...

Conclave Confidential: One Cardinal's Secret DiaryLocked down amid the frescoes and thoughts of flan. Patt Morrison April 20, 2005 The conclave journal of Roger Cardinal Mahony:Opening Day, minus 1. Checked into the Casa Santa Marta hotel — and I got a top-floor room! I asked about a low-carb menu; I don't want to nod off after a big pasta lunch — huge embarrassment. Isn't it funny — I have to come all the way to Rome to cast a vote that actually counts. The first ballot is tomorrow, but even four votes a day plus prayer surely can't take up...

With their court battles apparently exhausted, supporters of Terri Schiavo's parents said Sunday that they would take their efforts to Washington on Monday. The Rev. Patrick Mahoney, a conservative Christian activist who has become a prominent figure in the protests over Schiavo's case, said he will go to Washington to plead with congressional leaders and the Bush administration to enforce a subpoena issued March 18 by a House committee for the 41-year-old woman to appear before Congress. The conclusion of Mahoney's news conference Sunday afternoon was disrupted by a minor scuffle among protesters jostling to get their signs within camera...
