Appears the Crook for Congress (Edwin Edwards) is in a runoff with a Republican. The Crook was able to get 30% of the vote to the 27% of the second place finisher who will be in a runoff with Edwards... Appears Landrieu and Edwards will be on the ballot in the December 6th Runoff. This is in the crowded 5th Congressional District of Louisiana, which had nine candidates.
  • MSNBC: ‘Old White People’ in the South Who Vote Republican Are ‘Going to Die Someday’

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)Liberal MSNBC contributor Jimmy Williams said the “old white people” in the South who vote Republican are “going to die someday” and hopefully usher in a new era of Democratic rule in the region. Host Krystal Ball, a former failed Democratic congressional candidate, asked Williams whether white Southerners should just be written off by the party, but Williams said never, saying that since they are “for people” and Republicans aren’t, they would eventually win the day. “Mitt Romney only won South Carolina with 53 [percent], John McCain with 52,” he said. “That’s a changing South. Those old white people? They’re...

Let’s engage in a thought experiment. If Republicans were so terrified of impending electoral losses that they resorted to rallying pro-life voters by distributing mailers via surrogates that warned of forcible, government mandated abortion in the wake of a Democratic victory, the political press would be scandalized. The flipside of that scenario, Democrats embracing the caustic and dangerous notion that a Republican takeover of the Senate would herald a return to Jim Crow and state-supported racial violence, has not similarly incensed the Fourth Estate. In fact, a few of the more partisan political observers in the media see some merit...

WASHINGTON -- Conservatives are losing ground on the fight to keep marijuana illegal, a Republican congressman warned in dire terms at the Values Voter Summit. During a conference mostly focused on religious liberty, abolishing the IRS and promoting small government, Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) delivered a full speech on the ills of decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana. Fleming, a medical doctor, warned of a "growing acceptance" of marijuana -- a fact hard to deny, considering public opinion and state laws. Colorado and Washington state have legalized recreational marijuana, and 23 states and the District of Columbia have allowed the substance for...
  • Mary Landrieu's Remark About Blacks in the South Was True—and Politically Shrewd.

As a Democrat, Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu is running up against the late stages of partisan realignment. But while the rise of the GOP in the South may end her political career, nobody has ever confused Landrieu for a political neophyte, or accused her of misunderstanding the essence of Louisiana politics. It’s against that backdrop that she attributed President Obama’s unpopularity in her state, in part, to the fact that “the South has not always been the friendliest place for African Americans.” As regional or cultural dog whistles go, this is significantly less contestable than, say, the GOP's incessant derision...
  • Why isn’t Mary Landrieu smart enough to play the race card properly?

‘Mary had a little scam To fleece the voters’ views And everywhere her campaign went Her race scam made the news.’ Most of us are dumbstruck by the over-exploitation of the race card by Democrats. Their exaggerated playing of the race card is incredibly cliched and worn out. Do they really think that voters are gullible enough to swallow their hokum? Do they really believe that the intellects of American voters are that small? If I were a black voter I would be incensed that Democratic candidates assume that I was boneheaded enough to fall for these idiotic racial accusations....

Politics in Louisiana is a uniquely business. Don’t believe me? Then take a look at what’s about to go down there on Tuesday. You might not think a noontime political rally with two or three-dozen listeners in Lafayette, Louisiana -- a town 135 miles west of New Orleans -- is a logical place to look for one of the potentially crucial elements of the mid-term elections. And in just about any other state, you’d be right. But this is Louisiana. And Louisiana is....different. It’s not just its accents, its terrain, its laws (shaped by the Napoleonic Code, not British common...
  • Hillary Clinton fights for (still exempt) Landrieu: ‘She has a big heart, and a spine of steel’

NEW ORLEANS – Three days before Louisiana’s election, Hillary Rodham Clinton made her first campaign visit to the state in support of her former Senate colleague, three-term Democrat Mary Landrieu. “She has a big heart, and a spine of steel,” Clinton said at a rally billed as “Moms & Grams for Mary.” The former secretary of state compared Landrieu’s efforts to secure federal funds for Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina to her work, as a senator, to get aid to New York after September 11. “She was relentless,” Clinton said to the crowd assembled at the Sugar Mill even space near...

New Polls Show Republicans Pulling Away In Key Senate Races November 02, 2014 Republican Senate candidates are pulling away in the final days of key races, according to polls released this weekend. Republicans are either leading in Georgia, Kentucky and Louisiana or will likely win runoff elections, according to a NBC/Marist poll released Sunday. In addition, the Republican nominee in Iowa, Joni Ernst, now has a 7-point lead over Democratic challenger Rep Bruce Braley, according to a Des Moines Register poll released Saturday. Most polls have shown until now that the four races have essentially been deadlocked in the closing...

In a three way contest, incumbent Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu gets 44 percent, while Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy gets 36 percent and Tea Party ally Rob Maness gets 15 percent. In head-to-head matchups pitting Landrieu against either GOP candidate, both Cassidy and Maness receive 50 percent support, while Landrieu performs almost identically against either Republican – at 45 and 46 percent, respectively. Partly because he’s less well known in the state, Cassidy enjoys a better favorable rating (45 percent favorable/ 41 percent unfavorable) than Landrieu (44 percent favorable / 50 percent unfavorable). Landrieu was first elected in 1996 and has...

This started as a top ten list.Let's face it, with President Obama's awful approval ratings and the unfortunate consequences of Obamacare felt like a sting around the country, Democrats were already vulnerable in this year's midterm elections. These gaffes certainly won't help. Let's take a look at some of the worst mistakes Dems have made on the campaign trail so far:1.) That awful/insensitive/shameful and now infamous ad from the Wendy Davis (D-TX) gubernatorial campaign. 2.) Those colorful campaign memos from Michelle Nunn’s (D-GA) campaign, in which her own campaign referred to her as a “lightweight.” 3.) Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO) saying he was...

Former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton said she learned all she needed to know about Sen. Mary Landrieu by watching her work to get funding for New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Clinton recalled she and Landrieu's experience in the U.S. Senate together during a get-out-the-vote rally at the Sugar Mill in New Orleans on Saturday. She touted Landrieu's leadership and how she prioritized Louisiana's women and families while urging the crowd to vote Tuesday. Clinton and Landrieu served in the Senate together from 2001-2009. Clinton said her greatest memories of Landrieu came in the aftermath of Katrina. She remembered Landrieu...

Congressman Bill Cassidy spent Saturday shoring up support on the right wing of the Republican Party at a Northshore Tea Party rally. Flanked by U.S. Sen. David Vitter and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, Cassidy shared the stage with conservative favorite Dr. Ben Carson at the event in the woods near Abita Springs. Cassidy, of Baton Rouge, is the leading Republican candidate challenging the re-election of U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu. Republican Rob Maness is running to Cassidy’s right and polls show him with enough support to force a runoff. Voters go to the polls Tuesday to choose among the eight...

Dear Reader (unless you’re the kind of chickens**t who calls people “chickens**t” anonymously), Obama fatigue is setting in. Indeed, I’ve gone from Obama fatigue through full-on Obama Epstein-Barr to end-stage Obama narcolepsy. I hear him talking, or hear some MSNBC-type rhapsodizing about how misunderstood he is, and I start dozing off like a truck driver who took the drowsy-formula Nyquil by mistake. “Gotta stay awake! This is my job!” But then 20 seconds later, Jonathan Alter starts telling me how misunderstood the president is, and suddenly orange traffic cones are bouncing off my truck’s grill as I somnolently drift into...

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) on Friday stood by her comments suggesting race is a factor in Louisiana voters’ dislike for President Obama, saying “everyone knows this is the truth.” In a statement late Friday, Landrieu accused Republicans of twisting her words, but stood by her claim that the South has been a difficult environment for African-American and female politicians. “The main reason the President has struggled here is because of his energy policies are not in line with the people of Louisiana,” she said in a campaign statement. “We are a pro-drilling, pro-oil, gas state. The offshore moratorium was extremely...

Republican Louisiana state Sen. Elbert Guillory was on “The Kelly File” tonight to discuss his controversial new ad, in which he calls on black voters to “send Kay Hagan home.” In the ad, he says, "You see, black people are just being used by limousine liberals who have become our new overseers. We've only traded one plantation for another. You are not Kay Hagan's cause and you're certainly not her charity. You are just a vote. She has stepped off your backs to fame and fortune and left you behind on food stamps, deprived of the American dream." Tonight, he...

As you may have heard, we’re now only four days away from the 2014 midterms and gubernatorial races mercifully coming to an end, save for a likely runoff in Louisiana. And as you’ve also heard lately, race–for all the wrong reasons–has become a central theme for the party in blue. Speaking of the Bayou State, its likely-to-be-unemployed-after-said-runoff and current senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) had this to say to Chuck Todd (a good get via hustle by the new MTP moderator, by the way) regarding the reason behind her not inviting President Obama for help on the campaign trail: “The South...
