The 18-pound, barnacle-encrusted lobster had seen better days. After evading for at least 75 years the fate met by countless other crustaceans, he found himself in an offshore trawler, ultimately ending up in the tank at Mullaney’s Fish Market in Scituate. Luckily for the lobster, store owner Joby Norton has a soft spot for older sea creatures. “We’ve had people come in who wanted to buy him for the Fourth, but we decided we don’t want to sell him,” Norton said Tuesday in his Scituate Harbor market. “We’re better off letting him go so he can live out his life.”...

Fishermen discover mutated crustacean in trap and donate it to Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay Harbor where it will go on public display. A very rare lobster is set to go on public display this week at the Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay Harbor where it will live among other odd-looking lobsters, mostly those with strange coloring. But this one will stand out for something quite extraordinary: it has six claws. Capt. Peter Brown and fisherman Richard Figueiredo were lobster fishing aboard The Rachel Leah, one of the five boats featured in “Lobster Wars” on Discovery Channel, when they caught...

A rare blue lobster was caught in waters near Antigonish on Friday. According to research based out of the University of Maine, the odds of catching a blue lobster in North America are about one in two million. The blue coloration is caused by a genetic defect that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein that gives the lobster the unique color. Sheldon Trenholm of South River, N.S. was the lucky lobsterman who caught the brilliant blue crustacean near Monks Head. Trenholm said at first he didn't know what it was thrashing in the trap...

After a day of golf, President Obama on Friday night had a long, late dinner in Waikiki, spending more than 3 1/2 hours at Nobu restaurant. Joined by First Lady Obama and an unidentified group of friends, the President arrived at the "perennially hip" Waikiki Parc Hotel at 8:35 PM, home to Nobu, which bills itself as "yet another canvas for Chef Nobu Matsuhisa to display his legendary dishes." The closed-off streets around the hotel filled with excited crowds as word of the President's presence spread through Waikiki....

HE was heading for a pan of boiling water, ready to be served up for dinner. But this electric-blue lobster has given scientists food for thought instead because of its colour. The eye-catching crustacean named Lionel was caught by fishermen off Scotland and sent to a London market. Rex, 45, who saw Lionel at Billingsgate Market while buying supplies for his Chelsea Fishmonger shop, said: “It’s the most striking blue lobster I...

The Iraqi sniper captured after he killed two Marines has been freed and is at liberty - even as the still-grieving families of Brooklyn-raised Capt. John McKenna 4th and Queens-raised Michael Glover gather in Rockaway today for a memorial marking the fifth anniversary of their deaths. The families had been assured that "as long as there is a Marine in Iraq, the sniper will remain in jail." Their already overwhelming loss has been compounded by the failure of the Defense Department to inform them that Muhammad (Big Ears) Awwad Ahmad had been released.

Earlier this week, First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the National Restaurant Association with stern advice about the fare they should serve up -- less butter and cream, fewer fries. “I’m not asking any of you to make drastic changes to every single one of your recipes or to totally change the way you do business,” she said. “But what I am asking is that you consider reformulating your menu in pragmatic and incremental ways to create healthier versions of the foods that we all love." She also gave them advice on advertising. “It’s not enough just to limit ads for...

Lobstermen in southern New England are facing a possible five-year fishing ban after biologists made that recommendation to regulators, saying the drastic step is needed to save the depleted stock . . . The vast majority of lobsters caught in the Northeast are trapped north of Cape Cod to Maine, an area that accounts for about 93 percent of the catch and has recently grappled with the opposite problem — a glut of lobsters on the market . . .
