For Fattah's failed bid in 2007 to become mayor of Philadelphia, Naylor said, he distributed $200,000 in cash on Election Day from a fund that now lies at the heart of the Justice Department's racketeering conspiracy case. Another top strategist on the campaign, Thomas Lindenfeld, already has testified that he took out a $1 million loan from then-Sallie Mae CEO Al Lord at Fattah's encouragement. Because the donation exceeded city campaign-contribution limits, the loan was made to Lindenfeld's Washington political consulting firm and did not appear on the congressman's campaign filings.

The corruption of our great institutions has often been brought about by their location and nearness to the worst influences in our society. Georgetown University’s location in Washington DC, the heart of America’s political cesspool, raises an interesting question about which institution corrupted which. Did Washington corrupt the Jesuit school or was it the school and its disgusting history that helped corrupt the workings of our government? Recently uncovered historical records have revealed that during a financial crisis in its earliest days, Georgetown was forced to sell off one of the Jesuit Order’s most valuable assets to stay afloat. In...

School officials in Portland, Oregon, have banned books questioning climate change from the classroom. The city's public school board voted last week that any material saying climate change doesn't exist or that humans are not at fault should be removed. The resolution also directs school staff to develop an implementation plan for 'curriculum and educational opportunities that address climate change and climate justice in all Portland Public Schools.' The measure was passed even though the Oregon Institute of Science and medicine is circulating a petition which states: 'there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane,...

In denying his application for a concealed-carry permit, Oceanport Police Chief Daniel W. Barcus said Russell was unable to demonstrate “justifiable need” because there had been no specific attacks or threats made directly on him. To legally carry concealed firearms in New Jersey, residents have to apply to their local police for a permit demonstrating such a need. But critics of the state’s strict gun laws say this results in very few people other than acting and retired law enforcement officials getting approval for such permits.

A backdrop of Third World atrocity, suffering and merciless human-rights violations serves as the canvas for a faux-profound Hollywood love story in Sean Penn's stunningly self-important but numbingly empty cocktail of romance and insulting refugee porn, The Last Face. Beautiful movie stars — rugged, earthy Javier Bardem sporting flawless, bedroom-chic stubble, and iron butterfly Charlize Theron, wearing dewy no-makeup makeup and an excellent moisturizer — battle for 130 stultifying minutes to listen to their hearts while their souls take a hammering. Audiences are more likely to check out and just leave them to it....

The EU would have “the second most powerful military” in the world if its members pooled its resources, insisted the co-director of the Institute of Studies on Conflict and Humanitarian Action in an interview with EurActiv Spain. “If we added the capabilities we have in the EU together, we would automatically become the second most powerful military force on Earth and the reason we aren’t is because there is no political will. This is because each national government would rather be the head of a mouse rather than the tail of a lion,” said Jesús Núñez, a conflict analyst. …

Why do liberals hate science? The left has long claimed that it has something of a monopoly on scientific expertise. For instance, long before Al Gore started making millions by claiming that anyone who disagreed with his apocalyptic prophecies was "anti-science," there were the "scientific socialists." "Social engineer" is now rightly seen as a term of scorn and derision, but it was once a label that progressive eggheads eagerly accepted. Masking opinions in a white smock is a brilliant, albeit infuriating and shabby, rhetorical tactic. As the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion,...

For those who continue to wonder how the most powerful, most productive, most envied and most successful nation in history can be one short step from the 3rd class status of a Marxist dictatorship. 1. Teaching Math in 1950s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit? 2. Teaching Math in 1960s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit? 3. Teaching Math in 1970s A logger sells a truckload...

Mark Green, a longtime fixture on New York’s political scene, has written a tell-all memoir and political manifesto about his years as an advocate and perennial candidate. Green is at his best in Bright, Infinite Future when he tells advocacy stories, like helping to kick the mob out of the carting business in New York City. He is happy to share the credit and doesn’t get bogged down in denouncing enemies...

Perry Lutz says his struggle to survive as a small businessman became a lot harder after California voters reduced theft penalties 1½ years ago. About a half-dozen times this year, shoplifters have stolen expensive drones or another of the remote-controlled toys he sells (...). "It's just pretty much open season," Lutz said. "They'll pick the $800 unit and just grab it and run out the door." Anything below $950 keeps the crime a misdemeanor — and likely means the thieves face no pursuit and no punishment, say retailers and law enforcement officials.

George Zimmerman‘s gun sale attempt isn’t going very well. After having to move his online auction to a new site once already, the bidding on the weapon that killed Trayvon Martin seems to have been taken over by trolls determined to remind Zimmerman of his infamy. Despite his not-guilty verdict for the death of Martin four years ago, Zimmerman is a pariah to many for his apparent non-regret for the incident, and a myriad of controversial statements from him since then. Zimmerman posted the gun to be sold on United Gun Group, but the auction seems to have been taken...

Advocates of overturning the right to keep and bear arms have spent years deliberately turning innocents into victims of slaughter, all for the purpose of eventually disarming the American people. “Do as I say, not as I do,” gun-control zealots were predictably out in force after the Sandy Hook killings. After all, in the perverted mind of confiscation advocates like Michael Bloomberg and Barack Obama, the murder of 20 kindergarten students represented a longed-awaited opportunity to embarrass the more weak-kneed defenders of the 2nd Amendment into relenting to a nationwide assault against the foremost liberty of the American people. In...

The University of Oregon is sorely in need of an enema. It has become filled with the worst kind of social excrement a university can accumulate. It has descended into a state of perpetual readiness to root out and destroy any vestige of speech and thought that might even slightly deviate from liberal orthodoxy. When any member of the school’s cozy little community alleges that she/he has been offended, the speech warriors of the U of O’s Bias Response Team (BRT) spring into action. No complaint is too petty for these civil servants that have invented their own lifetime jobs....

Anyone questioning the sustainability and rightness of The New Normal is immediately attacked by the mainstream-media defenders of the crumbling status quo. Not only is everything that broke in 2008 fixed, everything's going great globally, and anyone who dares question this narrative in a tin-foil hat conspiracy nut or simply an annoyingly doom-and-gloomer who recalcitrantly refuses to accept the positive glories of official statistics: low unemployment, rising valuations of stock market Unicorns, etc. But the New Normal is anything but normal; all the readings of artificial life-support and manipulation are off the charts. If the New Normal were indeed a...

Usually, the admission of another rich child of privilege to the selective liberal finishing school known as Harvard is a non-story. But in the case of Malia Obama, it provides yet another example of the cynical elitism of modern liberals. FULL STOP: This is where liberal liars will try to distract you from the glaring hypocrisy of the elite by accusing me of attacking the innocent child of Barack Obama. It’s unclear whether this reflexive misdirection is the result of them being too stupid to understand an argument or whether they are simply falling back on their default move, dishonesty,...

WASHINGTON, May 5 (UPI) -- Soon after becoming the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump said he would be open to raising the federal minimum wage in a notable reversal of GOP policy. During a debate in November, Trump said he would oppose raising the federal minimum wage, which is currently $7.25 an hour. "I hate to say it, but we have to leave it the way it is," Trump said at the time. Speaking to CNN on Wednesday, Trump was asked about Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders' desire to raise the federal minimum wage to $15. "You can't live...

It's a well-worn (if not-entirely-agreed-upon) idea that college makes people more liberal. But a new report adds a twist to this: the most educated Americans have grown increasingly liberal over the last couple of decades. A report from the Pew Research Center finds a wide partisan gap between highly educated and non-highly-educated Americans. Not only that, but the share of college grads and post-graduates who are "consistently liberal" (based on their answers to a series of policy questions) has grown sharply in the last 20 years. In 1994, 7 percent of post-grads were "consistently liberal," and 1 percent of people...

George Washington University announced on April 25 its latest Battleground Poll. The single most resilient datum in the history of that poll has been the persistent conservative majority. Nothing has changed. The responses to Question D3 of that poll show that 55% of Americans identify themselves as either "Very Conservative" or "Somewhat Conservative," while 40% of Americans call themselves "Very Liberal" or "Somewhat Liberal." Excluding those who don't know or won't respond, conservatives constitute 58% of Americans. Every GWU Battleground Poll over the last sixteen years has shown the same overwhelming conservative majority in America. The size of the conservative...

This year just keeps getting sadder in the world of music, and this one really hits us hard. Legendary Philadelphia soul singer, Billy Paul, has died at age 81. Paul actively performed for a half century, but was best known for this chart-topping 1972 hit, "Me and Mrs. Jones." It was without a doubt one of the most lauded soul songs ever -- after overcoming some inital controversy -- and Paul made it his own with an expressive delivery over pristine Gamble & Huff production.
