George Washington University announced on April 25 its latest Battleground Poll. The single most resilient datum in the history of that poll has been the persistent conservative majority. Nothing has changed. The responses to Question D3 of that poll show that 55% of Americans identify themselves as either "Very Conservative" or "Somewhat Conservative," while 40% of Americans call themselves "Very Liberal" or "Somewhat Liberal." Excluding those who don't know or won't respond, conservatives constitute 58% of Americans.
Every GWU Battleground Poll over the last sixteen years has shown the same overwhelming conservative majority in America. The size of the conservative majority has wiggled a bit over the last sixteen years, but the fact of a strong conservative majority a majority enough to provide a landslide in any national election has not changed at all.
This finding dovetails with Gallup polling data, which in every single state-by-state breakdown has shown that the overwhelming majority of states have more conservatives than liberals. As I noted in my February 6, 2016 article, the Gallup Poll in its last seven such state-by-state surveys has always found that conservatives outnumber liberals in at least 47 of the 50 states.
Other polling organizations have begun over the last few years to ask and to report ideological identification in polls. SurveyUSA in its February 2016 50-state poll reported that 40% of Americans consider themselves either "Very Conservative" or "Conservative," while only 21% of Americans consider themselves "Very Liberal" or "Liberal."
State polls, which are typically conducted by state media outlets, show the same surprising results. Consider, for example, the ideological balance in these "swing states" in presidential elections. In Nevada, 37% call themselves "Conservative" and 19% "Liberal." In Colorado, 32% of respondents call themselves "Conservative," and 21% call themselves "Liberal."

10% hard lefties
20% hard conservatives
70% head in the sand idiots (of which 50% of those are welfare losers)
“Do wagon pullers still outnumber wagon riders?”
43 million gov workers 1
90 million not working
50 million on foodstamps.
Lol it’s not even close!
Talk about “unsustainable”!
It’s like James Brown. Whites liked him but could not go see him in concert.
“Stand in a supermarket line about the time government checks go out and observe how many are paying with EBT cards.”
Observational evidence but nevertheless on target.
There are a lot of conservatives in New York and New England (~30-40% in each state). If they all moved to California, no democrat would win a national election for the next 3 generations.
Far outnumber. The libs just have the biggest mouths and are the most violent so they get the most airtime.
These polls are beginning to seek the meaning of is. The only poll that counts is the one that occurs on election day. The next question is are the people motivated enough to vote and if they are will their votes count? Stalin always said that it is not the voter that counts, it is the one counting the ballots! Pray for America.
It depends whether you are willing to count right-leaning Populists in the Conservative column (which most FReepers aren’t).
The number that define themselves as straight “Conservative” has been declining, due to the obituary column + 25 years of Bush/RINO nonsense. It is likely a minority now.
The old ones die off and are replaced with Feel the Bern Socialists.
I think deluding ourselves to how “conservative” America is does conservatives no favor.
10% leftists, 40% swimming in the liberal muck.
I don’t think we should call welfare recipients and other takers of taxpayer money liberals. They vote that way, but if you ask them what it means, I would say most couldn’t provide an answer.
The GOP has only won the popular vote in presidential elections once since 1988.
Only Ted Cruz can’t read those tea leaves.
Fair enough. Although they likely have knee jerk liberal ideas and are not aware their are actually alternative takes on what they believe. For instance they likely believe America lost the Vietnam war on a military basis, when in fact America was pushed into tucking its tale by the leftist media (just one example).
I thought liberals now call themselves “progressives?” They may be asking the wrong question.
These types of polls are meaningless-absolutely meaningless. If you ask people if they are conservative or liberal, they will answer very differently than if you ask several questions such as, “do you believe your earnings from your labor are yours?”, “do you believe in the right to have and express your own opinion about governance?”, “do you think humans have the right to protect themselves, their families, and their belongings from harm or theft?”
A college student might answer they are a liberal but answer a series of questions in a very conservative way—this is not surprising because school and family, which is much of what they have known in their short life, is about a conservative set of rules of life. However, the content of school information and classmates’ shallow social faddishness may lead them to want to state they are “liberal” in order to fit in.
Well, we have gay marriage, transgender bathrooms, safe spaces in colleges and government spending and expansion that is not slowing down. And the Dems are still competitive in national elections after all that. So no, the nation is not remotely “conservative.”
