I REGRET that it was only upon reading his obituary this month that I first learned of Nguyen Chi Thien. He was a courageous Vietnamese dissident who had spent nearly 30 years in prison for his opposition to communist repression, cruelty, and lies. Much of Nguyen's opposition was expressed in poetry, most famously "Flowers from Hell," a collection of poems he memorized behind bars, and only put down on paper after being released from prison in 1977. Earlier, this year, a Mexican think tank — the Citizens' Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice — released a study ranking the world's most violent cities in 2011, and the results were astonishing. The 20 most violent cities were all in Latin America. The USA had some alarming scores too, led by New Orleans at 21. Other dangerous cities were located in Africa. None of the top 50 was in Europe or Asia, despite great unrest in those regions. The ranking is based on murder rate per capita in 2011.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz’ (DWS) reelection campaign may be sagging under the weight of Barack Obama’s slide in popularity among American Jews. California Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi says she's planning to run for the Alameda County Board of Supervisors seat vacated by Nadia Lockyer. Hayashi — who is on probation after pleading no contest in January to charges that she shoplifted from a Neiman Marcus store in San Francisco — has filed papers indicating her intent to run for supervisor in the November election. In an interview with the San Jose Mercury News the Democrat from Hayward told the newspaper that her opponents would try to use the shoplifting incident to what she termed "smear" her.

Radical writer Alexander Cockburn, a longtime columnist for The Nation and editor of the political newsletter CounterPunch, died Friday in Germany at age 71. He had been receiving treatment for two years for cancer, his fellow editor at CounterPunch, Jeffrey St. Clair, wrote on the publication's website. Cockburn, who lived in recent years in Petrolia, Calif., was known for an acidic pen that spared few on either the left or right for policies that he felt were hypocritical or corrupt.

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan suffered a heart attack early Friday morning and was rushed to intensive care, his rep confirmed to FOX411.
