By Michael, on November 9th, 2012 The victory by Barack Obama on election night has resulted in a huge wave of firings and layoffs all over America. A large number of businesses seem to have suddenly shifted into panic mode. The number of layoff announcements that we have seen in the last 48 hours has been absolutely shocking. So why is this happening? Well, the truth is that the federal government is absolutely suffocating small businesses all over America with rules, regulations and taxes. If you have never tried to run a small business, then you have no idea...

Bankrupt Bakers Footwear Group on Friday began liquidating 150 stores across the country, including 21 in the Los Angeles area. The St. Louis-based company's stores are being liquidated by Tiger Capital Group and SB Capital Group and the process should be completed by year's end. Stores being closed have about $30 million in inventory, the companies said in a statement. There are 33 stores in California. The going-out-of-business sales involve 70 percent of the group's Bakers and Wild Pair mall-based stores, which are familiar to shoppers throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties. Bakers Footwear Group sells a private-label and national-brand...

    CNN Money ^ | November 9, 2012 | Stephen Gandel, senior editor
Do we need to worry about Too Small to Survive? Now that President Obama has been re-elected, analysts, consultants and dealmakers have turned from whether Dodd-Frank will be repealed to what it means for banks now that it's likely here to stay. The overwhelming conclusion: Thousands of small banks will soon disappear. Emmett Daly, a Sandler O'Neill dealmaker who specializes in small banks, predicted at an industry conference put on by Mergermarket on Thursday that the number of banks in the U.S. would shrink to a few hundred. There are currently more than 7,000. Bill Egan, head of financial institutions...

  • Foodstamps Surge By Most In One Year To New All Time Record, In Delayed Release

While there had been speculation that the BLS may delay the release of its October nonfarm payroll number until after the election, it turned out there was no reason to worry. Perhaps this is because the number, while at stall speed, was not quite as horrible as some had expected (even if the change in average hourly earnings did tumble to new all time lows) and so boosted Obama's reelection chances. There was, however, another closely tracked number which perhaps is far more indicative of the economic "growth" in the past 4 years, which certainly had a delayed release. The...

Vestas Wind Systems is aiming to sell a stake of as much as 20 percent and shed another 3,000 off its headcount, more than doubling the number of jobs it plans to eliminate by 2013. The announcement came as the Danish company reported disappointing financial results that sent its shares tumbling 13 percent. The world's biggest wind turbine-maker said Wednesday that its third-quarter loss widened to 175 million euros ($225 million), compared with a loss of 60 million euros in the year-ago period. Analysts had forecast net income of 20 million euros, according to a Bloomberg survey.

Elections have consequences. We tried to tell you that, DUmmies. Governor Romney tried to tell you that. He said that Obamacare would be a jobs-killer. But did you believe him? Did you believe us? NOOO!! Well, guess what? Now that your beloved Barack managed to come up with enough votes in Florida, Ohio, and Virginia to get his sorry ass re-elected--which means that Obamacare now will not be reversed in the foreseeable future--guess what has started to happen, even starting the day after the election? That's right. Let the layoffs begin! You see, DUmmies, you get what you vote...

A coal company headed by a prominent Mitt Romney donor has laid off more than 160 workers in response to President Obama's election victory. Murray Energy said Friday that it had been "forced" to make the layoffs in response to the bleak prospects for the coal industry during Obama's second term. In a prayer circulated by the company, CEO Robert Murray said Americans had voted "in favor of redistribution, national weakness and reduced standard of living and lower and lower levels of personal freedom."

In the agenda, he predicted the total destruction of the coal industry by as early as 2030. He said conditions for his business would deteriorate because of more regulation and taxes, weaker economic activity and reduced energy pricing. In the prayer, Murray wrote, in part: “The American people have made their choice. They have decided that America must change its course, away from the principals of our Founders. And, away from the idea of individual freedom and individual responsibility. Away from capitalism, economic responsibility, and personal acceptance.” He concluded by asking God for forgiveness for the layoff decisions. “Lord, please...

The economy has taken a toll on two long-established family businesses in Luzerne County. Bartikowsky Jewelers, a landmark business in downtown Wilkes-Barre for 125 years, will close its doors in January and is starting a "going out of business" sale on Tuesday, owners Lynn and Mac Ahmad said today. Twenty-five people will lose their jobs and many of them have been employed by the business for decades, they said. Penn Refrigeration in Hanover Township, which has been in business for 68 years, is laying off about 30 employees as of 3:30 p.m. today, co-owner Al Finarelli Jr. said today. He...

Over the days following President Obama's re-election, the US stock market has undergone a two day sell-off resulting in a loss of over 400 points. On Wednesday, immediately following the election, the market suffered it greatest single day loss of the year. While numerous experts point to the Europe debt crisis or an approaching fiscal cliff in the US as the culprit, many business owners have indicated Obama's re-election as a direct cause of the faltering business climate and loss of confidence. One Las Vegas business owner, after having warned his employees of a certain lay-off if Obama were re-elected,...

About 150 workers at Sistersville's Momentive Performance Materials plant will be temporarily laid off later this month, officials said this week. Citing a reduction in customer demand and a weak economy, the company will lay off workers for a two week period beginning Nov. 12 and ending Nov. 25, with workers returning to the job Nov. 26. According to John Scharf, spokesperson for Momentive Performance Materials Inc., temporary layoffs due to reduced demand are commonplace in manufacturing. "There are slow downs like this at various times, where we don't receive many orders as other times of the year," he said....

Wilkes-Barre city employees will know by the end of the week if their jobs are safe from furloughs during the final six weeks of the year, city officials said Wednesday. In October, the city asked its nearly 300 employees to take voluntary furloughs to patch a $2 million deficit. But the number of employees who accepted them by last Friday's deadline was not enough to solve the city's budget woes, forcing the city to resort to mandatory furloughs, city spokesman Drew McLaughlin said. McLaughlin said officials are still determining how they can reduce the work force without diminishing services. The...
  • 600 Layoffs At Groupon

    11/09/2012 12:42:05 AM PST · by My Favorite Headache · 8 replies
Groupon is firing some employees today. A source familiar with the situation puts the number at 80. This is a significant number of people, obviously, but it's also a very small percentage of Groupon's 10,000+ global employees. Groupon is reporting Q3 earnings this evening. Management will presumably describe the details of these layoffs on the call. The source familiar with the situation suggests the cuts are part of a sales and marketing "optimization" effort that Groupon management alluded to on the last earnings call. UPDATE: Groupon disclosed that it has cut more than 600 jobs from its salesforce in the...
