A sheriff's office in southern Colorado has settled a lawsuit with a 71-year-old man who deputies allegedly tased 35 times in 2022 for $1.5 million. Kenneth Espinoza, of Trinidad, was in his truck when Las Animas County sheriff's deputies pulled over his son. Espinoza was asked to pull his vehicle behind the deputies' cars but was almost immediately detained and eventually tased while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car a number of times. Two of those deputies were fired in September 2023. One of the attorneys representing Espinoza said when the deputies were fired that this was "the...

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) published a tweet on Sunday telling Americans to report their own family members and peers for “suspicious behaviors.” The FBI’s tweet read: Family members and peers are often best positioned to witness signs of mobilization to violence. Help prevent homegrown violent extremism. Visit https://go.usa.gov/x6mjf to learn how to spot suspicious behaviors and report them to the #FBI. #NatSec

Let me say up front that I know this will be unpopular. But I can't help the uneasiness that I feel toward law enforcement lately...and I have some good reasons. Gone are the days of Officer Friendly, the neighborhood cop who knows everyone and is looking out for the community's best interest. It seems that lately, police officers end up terrorizing those they are supposed to be serving and protecting. Clearly, not all police are acting this way, but it sure seems the police state is ramping up. I have a high respect for police officers who respect the law....

Wearing full military gear and wielding high-powered rifles, Delaware state police broke into a home Friday, shooting and killing a dog who was running from them in fear. The entry was captured on Mark Reedy’s security camera, who says police were looking for guns, but the shooting takes place off-frame. The video shows the dog running up to the door as they are trying to break in, yelling “state police … search warrant.” The dog is barking and it’s tail is wagging but as soon as it sees a giant shield enter the home with a gun pointing from behind...

Earlier today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit ruled1 that the Little Sisters must comply with the government’s mandate2 to provide contraceptives for employees. The district court ruled the Little Sisters cannot receive a full exemption from the law’s contraception rules because they “do not substantially burden plaintiffs’ religious exercise or violate the plaintiffs’ First Amendment rights.”The nuns disagree. “As Little Sisters of the Poor, we simply cannot choose between our care for the elderly poor and our faith,” says Sr. Loraine Marie Maguire3, Mother Provincial of the Little Sisters of the Poor. “And we should not...

A massive drug raid in Roswell last week targeted dozens of people at homes across the city. But one of those homes didn't have what police were looking for, and their unexpected visit left the people inside shaken and upset. It started shortly after Nancy Parker's husband came home from work Friday evening. "There came this huge bang on the door, front door, sounded like the door was going to fall in," recalled Parker. She said her husband opened the door to multiple officers in raid gear with guns drawn. "We were completely shocked, upset," she continued. "I was panicked...

Traders Sports, one of the biggest gun dealers in the state, hopes a hearing in U.S. District Court next week will keep them in business. Traders has been under scrutiny for several years by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), which is trying to shut down the gun dealer. The ATF decided to revoke Traders gun permit on June 1. After an audit in 2003, the ATF claims that Traders can’t account for 1,767 weapons, and that guns sold at Traders turn up in crimes at an alarming rate. ATF spokeswoman Marti McKee said she couldn’t comment on...

The owner of a San Leandro warehouse complex searched by federal agents seeking rocket launchers scoffed Saturday at the notion that he has any links to terrorism or illegal military weapons. "This is ridiculous -- I'm a junkyard owner, not a terrorist,'' said Harold Chapman, 75, owner of a 25-acre former Kellogg's corn flakes plant that has been converted into warehouse space. "I'm about as much threat to national security as a tired old dog.'' Federal investigators said Friday, as they searched the building, that they had no information linking the search to terrorism. The federal search warrant used to...
