Okay people. You all know that this year is the 100th anniversary of the Cubs' first season in Wrigley Field. You also know that as of last year the national version of WGN no longer carries Cubs games. The Chicago station does, but the "superstation" apparently makes more money showing episode after episode after episode of a show called "Bluebloods" (which I know absolutely nothing about) than it does showing the Cubbies. So I looked up the radio station that currently carries the games and found it online. Well guess what? At game time I get the very beginning but...

CHICAGO—Hal Turner, an intermittent internet radio talk show host and blogger, was arrested today by FBI agents at his home in North Bergen, N.J., on a federal complaint filed in Chicago alleging that he made internet postings threatening to assault and murder three federal appeals court judges in Chicago in retaliation for their recent ruling upholding handgun bans in Chicago and a suburb. Internet postings on June 2 and 3 proclaimed “outrage” over the June 2, 2009, handgun decision by Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook and Judges Richard Posner and William Bauer, of the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals,...

Thousands of Internet radio stations and channels across North America are going silent today (6/26) as part of an industry-wide "Day of Silence". The landmark event is designed to draw attention to impending royalty rates that threaten to virtually shut down Internet radio as a medium. The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). To protest these rates and encourage you to take action and contact your Congressional representatives, we are taking...

Legislation introduced by Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Sam Brownback (R-KA) today would save Internet radio from a recent royalty hike that threatens to bankrupt the industry. The Internet Radio Equality Act would vacate a Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) decision to increase fees webcasters pay to play music online by a devastating 300 to 1200 percent. Companion legislation (H.R. 2060) introduced in the House of Representatives on April 26th, by Congressman Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Don Manzullo (R-IL), has already garnered the support of more than 60 cosponsors.

Copyright Ruling Worries Webcasters Mar 6, 7:38 PM (ET) By SETH SUTEL NEW YORK (AP) - Internet music broadcasters worry that a new ruling could put many of them out of business by drastically increasing the royalty payments they have to make to record labels and artists. The new rates, which are retroactive to last year, were decided on Friday by the Copyright Royalty Board, a panel of three copyright judges, and made public Tuesday on the board's Web site, .http://loc.gov/crb The ruling could have the greatest impact on startup companies that make their living from broadcasting music online and...

A decision by the Copyright Royalty Board to raise royalty fees could put some small online radio stations out of business by Olga Kharif Kurt Hanson runs a Chicago-based online radio station that streams more than 300 channels of classical, jazz, oldies, and other music genres aimed at adults. The station, AccuRadio, lures more than 1 million visitors a month—not bad for a startup that's only been around since 2002. If a Mar. 5 decision by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) takes effect, AccuRadio may not be around much longer. The decision, due to take effect sometime during the next...

SAN FRANCISCO--In 1970, 20-year-old student Bill Sagan had his first real brush with rock and roll history at an early Led Zeppelin concert at Chicago's fabled Aragon Ballroom. Now the entrepreneur owns one of rock's biggest treasure troves of recorded shows by Zeppelin and other history-making bands, and he's beginning to share it freely online. Since 2002, Sagan has owned the full archives of legendary promoter Bill Graham, whose concerts featuring performers such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and others helped define the late 1960s and early '70s. Late last week, Sagan began putting excerpts from...

Move over XM and Sirius. A new technology allows Internet radio to be heard through a car stereo system. "iRadio," designed by Motorola, uses a specially designed cell phone as an intermediary between the car radio and a personal computer. Subscribers will choose six Internet radio channels and download them from a computer into the phone, the Chicago Tribune reports. When iRadio is on, six buttons on the car radio will correspond to the six Internet channels loaded into the phone. It will also be accessible for listening on phones equipped to handle the new technology. The service is now...

A Freeper turned me on to this site a while back It is an all classical station 24/7. Their stream is flawless – never a drop out in all the time I have listened. My local station plays less and less classical, which is cool; they know the market. But, it is fine to have this resource available when one just wants something familiar, or hear something old that is new to you. C.S. Lewis once said that one should read the old books first. I think one should listen to the old music first. They claim to be 100%...

July 15 issue — Jim Atkinson is cannon fodder in the digital-music wars. Five years ago he and his wife, Wanda, began 3WK, a virtual radio station that streams tunes of their beloved alt/indie rock to listeners over the Internet. Unlike broadcast radio, which requires astronomical investments in licenses and broadcast equipment, a Webcaster needs only software and a server.

THE RESULT IS A rich universe of more than 10,000 alternative Web stations, many of which cater to narrow if not bizarre tastes: from Hawaiian ukulele music to Tanzanian drumming.
