Fans at the Indianapolis 500 may have thought singer-songwriter Jewel's version of the national anthem was a little tone deaf. Instead of doing a by-the-book rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner', the Alaska-raised Folk artist, 49, put together a more nuanced version of the anthem. On a stage as big as 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing', the four-time Grammy-nominated artist put together a soulful version of the 200+ year-old song. It was similar in style and tone to the national anthem she sang at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game in Utah, where she was born. While it wasn't a complete departure...

MILLER LITE CARB DAY Friday, May 26 at 11:00am on Peacock network. A bit of history: For those that don't know Carb Day was the last chance to make any final adjustments to the engine fuel mixture and tuneup back in the days when the cars still used Carburetors before Fuel Injection replaced them. It was also the last chance for making any changes and adjustments to the cars. These days it is the last chance to fine tune the setup of the car's suspension, make sure that the drivetrain has no leaks or other problems before Sunday's Indy 500....

Known as “Big Al” once his own son made a name for himself in racing, Unser is part of an elite club of four-time winners of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Unser won the Indy 500 in 1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987, and is the only driver in history to have both a sibling and a child also win one of the biggest races in the world. His final victory at age 47 made him the oldest winner in Indy 500 history. He dominated in his first Indy win in 1970 by starting from the pole and leading all but...

I was driving into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1983 when Derek Daly was being interviewed by Larry Henry on WIBC and uttered the now-infamous “n….. in a woodpile,” description of himself as he assessed the makeup of his Wysard racing team. Of course it was shocking to hear on the biggest radio station in town, but even though I’d only met Daly a couple weeks earlier, I also knew from his delivery that he had no concept of what he’d just said. I found him in Gasoline Alley and told him he could not use that word in any...

Hometown and VP Pence family favorite Ed Carpenter sits on pole, the only driver to turn a lap in excess of 230MPH during qualifying. The news that the legendary Dan Gurney died on Sunday night after a long battle with pneumonia was something racing legends Mario Andretti and Bobby Unser had difficulty accepting. Although they knew Gurney was in failing health, the fact that he was a “Mount Rushmore of Auto Racing” figure made him bigger-than-life to drivers who have been described in the same vein. “It’s one freaking sad day,” an emotional Unser told Autoweek in a phone interview Sunday night. Andretti echoed those sentiments from his home in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, on Sunday evening.

A Denver sportswriter is out of his job after triggering an onslaught of criticism for tweeting that a Japanese driver winning Sunday's Indianapolis 500 made him "uncomfortable." Terry Frei, a sports reporter for the Denver Post, sent the questionable tweet shortly after Japanese race car driver Takuma Sato hailed victory in the illustrious Indy 500. "Nothing specifically personal, but I am very uncomfortable with a Japanese driver winning the Indianapolis 500 during Memorial Day weekend," he wrote.

Hi, Folks! Please forgive the vanity, but I'm doing a "bucket list-type" trip in a couple of weeks to the 100th running of the Indy 500 on May 29. Looking forward to it,obviously! I'm hoping knowledgeable Freepers might have some advice re: weather (seems fine, usually, on TV), mosquitoes, places to go - people to do, etc. Indy museum is on the agenda, of course. I guess sun block will be in order but I'm particularly worried about skeeters 'cause they seem to come from miles around to feast on my flesh. My wife loves it that they leave her...

Hi, Friends, and Happy Independence Day despite these trying times. I'm wondering if there's a thread or ping list for things Indycar-related. If not, is there interest? I don't know how to set up a Ping list, though it can't be that difficult, and if there are others who'd like to keep apprised about things Indycar, as well as to cheer along our favourites drivers and teams, I'm willing to spearhead it, with Admins' blessing of course. We just saw an incredible weekend of racing at Houston's double header and we have another big 500 miler this weekend. It's been...

Ryan Hunter-Reay has captured the 98th Indianapolis 500 in a dramatic finish, holding off a final charge from Helio Castroneves after making a gutsy, outside pass into Turn 1 on the final lap for the lead. Hunter-Reay held off Castroneves by just 0.0600 of a second, the second-closest finish in ’500 history (1992). The win is the first for Andretti Autosport since 2007 (Dario Franchitti) and the team’s third overall.

Detroit Grand Prix Stopped Because Of Detroit’s Terrible Roads The first running of the IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix since 2008 was red-flagged this afternoon after a piece of the track started to crumble, causing driver James Hinchcliffe to go flying into the wall. As you can see in the video (YouTube link provided below), he was not happy about it. Indy's return to Detroit's Belle Isle course was supposed to be another signal of the rebirth of the American automaker. Instead, it's just been a reminder of Detroit's failing infrastructure and Indy's inability to make anything outside of the Indy...

INDIANAPOLIS -- Celebrity chef Guy Fieri will spice things up behind the wheel at this month's Indianapolis 500. As RTV6's Sports Director Dave Furst reported in early May, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway confirms the Food Network star has been tapped to drive the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 pace car. Fieri rose to fame after winning "The Next Food Network Star" in 2006, and now hosts "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives," "Guy's Big Bite" and "Tailgate Warriors" on the network. An avid classic car collector, Fieri owns the red 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."
